Try to keep up. Avoiding an area because of high crime rate or presence of dangerous characters is prudent. Avoiding an area because there are people of a certain race is racist. It's not difficult for most people to understand. If you want to walk around unaware and unprepared in certain areas that is your prerogative. Some people do it their whole life without ill effect. I too have a degree in criminal justice. But I gather you might be an LEO, with a gun, as you say you frequent high crime areas. Having the ability to defend yourself may offset any apprehension you have about visiting a certain area. Again, try to keep up. If a certain group of people are known to be violent, staying away from where those people might be, does not make you a racist. It makes you prudent. Now if they allowed law abiding citizens the ability to defend themselves, with the same deadly force, as used by these individuals, would make this conversation moot. But that's not allowed. Hence, prudence rains the day. Whether a prudent person is a racist is purely conjecture. I think not.

I've been in violent physical confrontations with plenty if folks from plenty of races, including an urban black youth and a recent African immigrant. One was trying to inflict great bodily harm, and I would've been justified in killing him. I managed to avoid sending anybody to the hospital or morgue, but I had help. Prospective jurors are questioned, under oath, re: whether they have any biases that would predispose or interfere with blah blah, etc. They're required to answer such questions truthfully as much as any other person speaking under oath. So if they answer "No" and then engage in jury nullification, then at the very least they've violated their oath of office as a juror, and it might even be viewed, by a pissed-off judge, as perjury. Some years ago I spent a day on jury duty. I got called as a prospective juror in a capital murder/death penalty case. When we as a group were asked if anyone was so opposed to the death penalty that they could not in good conscience convict, I was one of several who raised their hand; and I was excused from that panel. I thought about maybe trying to get on a capital case just so I could prevent the death penalty from being imposed during the penalty phase; but doing so would have violated at least 2 oaths, so I was just straight-up honest about it.
