Maybe this will explain it better: The reason that we can do this is because the resources of the Earth are described in renewable terms - we can use more than what is renewable in any given time period, but if we continue to do so, eventually, we will run out. $20 says skinheads take January 19th off, too. And British workers in the US take July 4th off, and Native Americans take October 12th off. Hell, I'm a vegetarian, and I took Thanksgiving off - even sitting at the dinner table right next to my turkey-eating cousins. Oh, the hypocrisy! Also, the office is locked up pretty tight on those days, and they didn't give me a key. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Well, I think it's good for people to stand up and voice support for family values. I don't think it's all that good to tell others what those family values should be, though. Maybe politicians should stand up and say "whatever your parents taught you about family values, you should try to live by that. Unless you disagree with your parents." Scratch that. Maybe they should say, "before you have a family, decide what you want your values to be, marry someone with the same set of values, or one that you can change to your way of thinking, then you'll have something to fight over when one of you cheats." In any event, the point of the post is that if politicians eschew certain behaviors, then do those things, it makes you wonder what other rules they're breaking? Maybe some of the people that preach against homosexuality, really are homosexuals, themselves? Or maybe some politicians that support paying taxes have been dodging taxes, themselves? Maybe even some politicians that think guns are perfectly safe end up shooting their friends on accident? I am absolutely convinced that more than one politician in office doesn't believe in God, while attending church, citing biblical morals, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. After all, it's not about who you are, it's about how everyone else perceives you. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Well, then, it's not a very good point, is it? You are superimposing your own prejudices onto my post. I never said other media organizations are not left-wing. In fact, I believe many of them are very much so. Neither did I claim that anyone who doesn't agree with me is retarded. Nor do I condone the actions of Nazi groups. I'm sorry you had to read so much into the post that wasn't there, and it's unfortunate that made you angry. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Direct cost vs. indirect cost. On one hand, they are not taking welfare, which is unusual for a family that size. Good for them. On the other hand, population growth is arguably the biggest environmental problem humans have. We are currently using the resources of 1.3 earths, so we are going to run out fast if we don't curb our appetites. Having 16 kids is really contributing to that problem. I wonder if anyone's done an ecological footprint by family size? Anyway, as mere humans, we often don't see the indirect cost of our actions, but that doesn't make it less dangerous for our species. Instead of basing your opinion on a four-year old study of one person's questionable method of analyzing media content (I call it questionable, because he calls the Wall Street Journal liberal, and the Drudge Report left-leaning), why don't you look at my post literally? In the case of Obama accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, the home page of Fox News was exactly how I captured it in a screenshot. Can you point to one story on that entire page that says anything positive about the ordeal? Is there one story that is even neutral? "fair and balanced" is not the first thing that comes to mind in this instance. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Understanding that the Peace Prize committee is not perfect is part of understanding their decision. They never gave the Peace Prize to Ghandi, who probably deserved it more than any other human being. Hitler was once nominated. It's not a perfect system - thus Obama gets the prize. I agree - this is why I feel permitted to share in its pride. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Um, landing on the moon was a great day for Niel Armstrong, not the US? As a country, we contributed to Obama's success, like it or not, just like taxpayers paid for the moon landing, so we deserve to share in it's pride. I happen to think Kissinger was a great man, and not because he personally signed my birth certificate, and certainly not including his connection to Watergate. Despite his flaws, I am proud that he won the prize, as well. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Just saw The Prestige on DVD (Netflix), and I thought it was a pretty good movie. I was impressed with how they took complex manipulations and rendered them easily understood in the plot. I wasn't so impressed with the broken timeline - the big studios all do that now, and it makes following the story unnecessarily complex. Michael Caine was a great anchor for the story, but the other actors fell flat (although Christian Bale had a few moments). I recommend this one. I saw The Illusionist in the theaters, and I thought it was visually impressive, but the plot was one-dimensional. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I'm not sure what the TARP regulations are, but I am guessing that any money repaid from banks is used to repay the original debt that the country took out, and not used to spend on some other foolish government program. But I don't know - anyone else know? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I think you bumped up the class average! Good job - when I was taking it, I got like 7, and the average for everyone was 10, but 24 more than outweighs that on the up side. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I would think that when the President of the US receives the Nobel Peace Prize, regardless of whether you like him, or whether you think he deserves it, it would be considered a great day for the country, and it's citizens might feel proud. Unless you are an avid reader of Fox News - every lead article subtly or not so subtly slamming the award. I guess the right-wingers there are only proud to be an American when a Republican sits in office. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I wouldn't call it "easy" - some technical skill is required. People talk about doing this all the time, but I hang out with crackers, and I've never heard one actually do it. I mean, I know it's done, I just don't think it's as common as people think it is. I have used free wifi in Denver some years ago, once. But I've tried several times since, and all I get are access to pay-as-you-go WiFi (something like $10). Now, if you are in the club lounges, it's usually free there, but I'm not important enough for that - lol. I'll try it again if I get a chance. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

We should always wait to do things until we can do them well. In other words, we should never do anything. Ever. Because there's always someone with higher standards. Even if you don't think the military runs well, it is still the strongest military on the planet. In any event, it's not about how well it's run, by your definition, it's about doing better than what we have now. That means an end to economic discrimination of healthcare, for starters. It also means removing the corrupt insurance companies from the equation. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

through January 15, 2010. 54 different airports - just bring your laptop, or WiFi phone, and surf away while waiting for your flight. Here is a list of airports. Denver is not included But I'll be going to Cozumel at the end of the month, via Houston, so .... well, I guess it doesn't really matter to me, since I have a WiFi card with Verizon. Google says they want to let people stay in touch over the Holidays, and suggest donating some money to a charity as a way of payment, but it's not required. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
