  1. Iambic pentameter and all! That must have taken a long while. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  2. We haven't even gotten to PETN in breast and penile implants. Just wait - TSA is going to have to cop a feel to everyone's erogenous zones before boarding. Something that will finally make up for their crappy pay. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  3. Just the smell was enough to knock you over! There's a reason they used to bury the stuff in the ground to ferment it. Now, bulgogi - I loved that stuff. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  4. They say sometime in 2010. But that doesn't mean anything. Must have one! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  5. On Ad-hoc, it's limited to backyard use. But with their API, you could easily build a flight path that leaves range, flies a designated pattern and return. Which is why I think that Homeland Security may have an issue. Scouting + cheap cruise missile. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  6. I remember that car when I was in high school! $85K, and that was in 80s dollars. These days, it would still be considered sports, but not in the high-end. I wonder how many are still running? Of course, 200HP is still plenty of power to get one into trouble. I recall they had a transmission that could slip from 1st to 4th gear, to keep fuel consumption down while idling. Genghis Khan

I don't think he did. He was really a fairly progressive leader of his own people, just not nice to the other people. They say that he killed the few leaders of the tribes, but let all of the warriors live, as long as they pledged to serve him. Many of those underlings became great leaders of his own army, since he promoted based on talent, rather than favoritism. OTOH, he did have first choice of the maidens in new areas he conquered, and he took many concubines. Sadly, women just didn't have as many rights then as they do now. It's also a mystery what killed Khan - there is speculation that a noble woman killed him in revenge for killing her husband (who was one of the aforementioned tribal leaders). 9. My minivan comes with a "valet key", which only unlocks doors and starts the car, but does not unlock the glovebox. Idea is you can put things in there, and the valet can't steal them. Maybe fancy sports cars need a "valet key" that only lets mechanics and valets drive at 25 MPH, in first gear. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

    Genghis Khan

I can see Shatner being a descendant of the real Genghis He has Polish and Hungarian roots, and Khan's children did conquer both countries. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  11. Doh! Wrong religious hero, typing too fast. I'll change that one Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  12. Mark Sanford had a long-term extramarital affair with a Brazilian women. Bill Clinton got a blow-job in the oval office. Obviously, they aren't the same If you put political pressure on a country to change a habit, you damn well better not be doing that same thing! Whaling is just as much of a cultural experience for the Japanese as it is for the Inuits, even if the scale is greater. And for the record, I think it should all be outlawed. But I think Americans shouldn't be so hypocritical about it. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  13. There's no mention in the good book, but I'm pretty sure Jesus also hated cats. I also heard in the original Book of Genesis that Moses Noah got slapped by his wife for trying to ditch the cats during the flood. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. Cool, but Homeland Security will probably be outlawing these within a year, or so. Just a guess. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

    Genghis Khan

I give this thread a 50/50 shot of ending up in Speaker's Corner. But anyway: The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has a special exhibit on Khan, which is pretty good. The whammy for me was at the very end, when they showed DNA evidence that about 16 million men living today (and probably as many women) are descendants of his. That's about one in every 220 living males (mostly Mongolian, of course). I think about all the conquering rulers, many of them violent, some of them "prolific" , and I wonder how many of us have bloodlines to them. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  16. What would Jesus do? On the plus side, this is my first reading of the New Living Testament. I find it a lot more compelling than King James. Archaic language has been reformatted, numbers like "cubits" have been replaced with "feet", and they didn't try to gloss over the ugly parts, like when God gets all Old Testament on everyone's ass. Plane crash

One report that pilot and copilot are confirmed dead, and they were the only persons on the plane: http://news.puggal.com/royal-air-freight-crash-near-chicago-executive-airport-16820/ Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  19. I wonder if they are going to try to stop American whaling next? I.E. Inuit whaling. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  20. I don't think they're aloof - I think they just haven't been domesticated as long as dogs. For well over 15,000 years, we've bred wolves to become dogs that are friendly to humans. Cats have only been domesticated, from the african wildcat, for about 9,000 years, so they haven't had a chance to become as friendly, in general terms, to people. Combine that with less rigorous breeding for specific traits. Well, that, and they display their affections in an entirely different manner. It's all about how humans manipulate the animals. Which is another reason I don't have pets Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  21. I don't think the fear was totally unjustified. It got people to make the changes necessary to ensure that the small percentage of computers that would have had issues did not. Had nothing been done, we would have had problems. Not insurmountable problems, but they would have been inconveniences, for sure. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  22. If they can control your mind, they sure as heck can give you a decent "beer-google". Then you wake up next to a lizard, or some purple sludge with a brain. Speaking of sleeping with lizards, is anyone else annoyed that "V" has taken a hiatus until the Olympics is over? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  23. Will you people please stop fucking the aliens??? I know it's you filthy-minded skydivers that are creating these "alien-human" hybrids with your perverse sexual antics. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  24. The Post Office does a fair amount of temp hiring every year in December to handle the holiday volume. Although I have heard that the volume is so low this year, it matches ordinary volumes of previous years. I guess people have cut down on cards this year. In the wake of the "nutter with a gun" incident at the post office recently, I wonder how the government is going to respond to people that start complaining about politics at the Post Office. The most probable answer is that you're just too old. Over nine, you're past your prime. There's no way anyone over 18 can compete with the kids that play that stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p_02LDlBIE&feature=related Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
