  1. This was communing with the dead jedi. The reason that Luke can see the ethereal Yoda, Obi-wan, and Anakin is because it was Qui-Gon that figured out out to commune from the dead to the living jedi. That is seen in Epsiode 2, after Anakin kills the sand-people, and Yoda is meditating, you hear a distance Qui-gon voice shout "Anakin, no!" - Yoda realizes that Qui-Gon has come back in ethereal form to commune with the living. Yoda assigns learning this skill to Obi-wan at the end of EP3. You'll note that no other jedi seems to have this skill in any of the other movies - it's because it's new to the Jedi. Another problem with this is that Obi-wan never really taught that skill to Luke, but he somehow acquires it after Obi-wan dies. That's how he can talk to dead Jedi. 2. Qui-Gon was Obi-wan's master, but Yoda took a hand in instructing all of the new jedi (younglings), so Yoda was Obi-wan's instructor for part of his training. But there are a lot of problems with the prequels, due to the fact that Lucas had only a rough script of the prequel formats in the 1970sand 80s, but didn't completely write them until after the original episodes. In Star Wars (Episode 4), Obi-Wan is introduced to R2D2 by Luke, who said it belonged to him. Obi-wan responded with "I don't recall ever owning a droid". But in fact, Obi-wan owned R4 in the prequels, and should have remembered R2 for sure, even if it was 20 years before. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  6. hmm, acccording to this, it's true. Could it have to do with the acceleration vector pointed to the center, and that you only get a fraction of the vector if you are not pointed straight at the center? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  7. If you like red wine, you'll love this stuff. You can usually find it in wine shops and better liquor stores. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  8. Yeah, they've done that for years. Sometimes they'll "forget" to cancel the service, and charge you a few extra months too. Nice going away gift. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  10. I thought he was just hanging around the library a lot because he liked Hermione But yeah, Fleur wasn't portrayed all that well. After all, she is supposed to be the best of her school. I envisioned her as much more haughty and cocky too. All she did in the movie was get scared and cry a lot. Normally, I don't care for movies "beefing up" female characters, but in this case, they went too much the other way, for sure. And it would've been cool to see both the Veela and Leprechauns with the fake gold. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  13. That was why I wondered if it was a porcupine and not a skunk. They all would have pokey things. But a skunk doesn't fit that. But after looking at the card, it's definitely stripes. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. Sure it's a skunk and not a porcupine? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  15. Snape - was really disappointed with the lack of screen time. Rickman is outstanding in this role. The one short scene in his office with the veritaserum was fun. Moody - absolutely stole the show. Nothing less I would expect of Gleeson. Skeeter - a very weak character with poor acting, IMO. Richardson is a solid actor that gave a mediocre performance in this movie. They could've left her out, even though she's a big character in the book. Siruis Black - Oldman is one amazing actor, and he also got shortchanged in this film. But he'll get his due in the next movie. The kids are still doing a great job of acting, but they look WAY older than 14 Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  16. Suicide shift is a short handle on the side of the bike - you have to take your hand of the handlebar to shift. San Fransisco is, well, just hellacious hilly and it sucks to drive any standard transmission when you're on hills that point you straight up at the sky. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  17. Best Buy was offering a warranty plan that let me return the XBOX and wireless controllers for a complete refund within two years. The next-gen xbox was due out six months later (but really took a year and a half). So I get all my money back. I have to pay the difference for the higher price of the 360, but it should be only about $100. Scratch the idea of getting one this week - it looks like everyone's sold out. 21. Yeah, I think in the book, his eyes are yellow slits, or red slits, like a snake. But I suspect they didn't want to change Ralph Feinnes eyes because that would make him harder to recognize (maybe it's in his contract or something). I thought the way they did his nose was awesome, and made up for it. Can't think of much that they added in this movie that wasn't in the book - the tongue-flick thing by Crouch Jr. But it has been a while since I read the book - almost 8 months OTOH, what they left out of the movie could make a complete second movie - like Kill Bill. 22. Just saw it tonight. I thought it was pretty scary. Not as charming as the first movies. Very tense, and more like an action/drama. It would've been good to see more light moments. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  23. Wow. Blue ones, Don I took his AFFI course a few weeks ago in Denver. Unfortunately, I didn't do the evaluation jumps yet. I caught a bad cold in Houston the week before, and I elected to wait until my congestion cleared up before jumping. I was in touch with him so we could schedule evaluation jumps in Florida after I returned from Fiji. I guess we won't be able to do those jumps together Don was a good guy. He had a definite sense of right and wrong. He was tough, but a fair evaluator. He listened well and gave good feedback. A lot of jumpers in the States didn't know a lot about him and AFFI because he spent time overseas and especailly Japan teaching AFF instructors there. He was planning on buying a house in Colorado and spending some time out here. It's too bad we won't be seeing him around here. Blue skies. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
