  1. Not only that, but apparently Rambo 4 is in production Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  2. What is a sport, and what isn't a sport: 1. It is a sport if top performers can get paid to do it. Definitely true for sex. 2. It isn't a sport if you can drink beer while doing it. Also true of sex. I have to concluded that we should all stop drinking beer and get paid for sex. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  3. A pretty good description. But bad teeth and ears that stick out can be ... err ... useful Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  5. Friend of a friend story: ... so this guy was out hiking in the CO mountains with his dog. The dog was one of those full-of-beans dogs that can find trouble inside a cardboard box in the desert at night. Anyway, the dog manages to root out a rattlesnake from the bush. The rattlesnake gets defensive and coils for a strike. The guy saw it coming and didn't want the dog bitten, so he jumps in front of the dog and gets bit by the snake. Then he wanders several miles out of the bush, very dizzy almost passing out several times, to try to find a road, which takes a few hours, then a passerby picks him up ina car and drives him to the hospital. By the time he got there, the doctors said most of the venom has filtered out of his blood, so they have no real treatment for him, because he's too late getting to the hospital. Both man and dog live, hospital bills him $500 for "treatment" and the snake got away. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

    I'm worried

There is an overwhelming and compelling reason for everyone to watch a soccer game in Spanish, even if they don't speak Spanish. It goes like this: GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLL !!! American sportscasters just don't get into the game like that Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  10. My father-in-law owned a DZ in California that had a tower. It was the single largest problem, by far, for the DZ. It resulted in significant lost time, fuel and even customers for the DZ. I think a lot of it depends on the relationship the DZ and the tower have, and hopefully if Deland gets a tower, they can co-exist and even possibly help each other. But I will feel pretty bad for them if they do get one. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

    AJAX skills?

There are some issues with elements rendering differently on different (modern) browsers as well. AJAX is going to slow down your page rendering time, despite the cool name It's not a bad technology, and definitely a step up from JSF. The XMLHttpRequest is a neat idea, and may eventually become the standard for requests, especially as Semantic Web grows, but right now, all it does is slow down transactions. Vegas???????

***like REALLY hot. Quote Yeah, I've got three hours in the Vegas tunnel and I can confirm that it gets very hot in there at the end of a summer day. We were there with some of our co-workers who had never flown, and we were hoping they would have the chance to try. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  15. Living in the middle of a city makes it even more interesting. According to the State of Colorado web site, there are 36 convicted felony sex offenders just in my zip code. Three of them repeat offenders. I guess repeat offenders get their picture shown, whilst one-time convicted felons just have to report their name, age, address and description. 16. I was there a year ago, and saw advertisements for it "coming soon". Plans to build it on the Canadian side of the falls, I guess. Any more word on this? I'm starting to think this tunnel is "vapor-ware" - can I still use that term from the 90s? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

    Vegas???????

I was just in Vegas last week for business. Three days and we couldn't get into the tunnel. The problem is they want their last class at 6 pm, and if you are in meetings until 5 or 5:30, you just won't have the time We were going to bring a group of at least 4, but they didn't want to stay open a little later for us. Tunnel Suits

Heh - Jeannie saw the video of our tunnel time earlier this week. She said "hey, is that Derek free-flying ?!?!" I told her that I don't think he would like to hear it called "free-flying" First hook, now Skycat. What is this world coming to? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  19. I taught a dozen or more AFF ground courses, and recommended that two students do not jump, one because of age, one because of injury. When I teach, I'm always willing to spend extra time (sometimes hours) after the class working with students. My philosophy is if they are willing to put in extra time and effort, so am I. I've worked for hours after class with students that need a bit more time, and I won't take tips for that - it's part of my job, and I don't mind doing it. The older student took the class with his son, and he simply wasn't getting it. He had to think a long time about each situation, and still came up with the wrong answer. I talked to the AFFIs and told them it's really up to them, but I would say no if it was me. In this case, the instructors worked with the student and agreed with me, but the DZO didn't want to refund even part of the money, so we offered to exchange his AFF Cat A jump for a tandem. He seemed OK with that. The second was a young girl who felt that she couldn't perform the practice PLFs. She agreed she should wait until her injury improved before making the first jump. In neither case did I feel that anyone was pressured to let students jump who weren't fit to do so. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  21. PAC, better than a Cessna, but not as good as a Caravan. PAC is probably a little better than a Porter, but not anywhere close to an Otter, King Air, Casa or Skyvan. The door is nice and wide, but very short. It's a very unstable aircraft on the ride to altitude. But it's jumpable, and I'll take it over a Cessna any day Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  22. Ditto - Hammy was definitely the best character. But I loooove coookie Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  23. I thought the movie was mediocre. Except for the part where Amelie kicked butt - that was just funny. McKellan stood out, but he always does. But then again, I thought the book was mediocre, too. Brown followed standard suspense techniques - nothing new. And he recycled old ideas - nothing new there either. For someone who wanted to dispel common myths, he sure promoted a lot of them (example, the apple didn't fall on Newton's head). Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  24. There's what you need to pass the coach course, then there's what you need to be a good coach. To pass - two things: belly flying and ground teaching. On the belly flying - I gave up freeflying just because I wanted to be an instructor, like you. Plan on doing tunnel camps - two hour camps if you can get them, with a good belly instructor. Get an RW suit with booties and learn to use it. In the sky, practice swooping in to take a dock, and four-way as much as you can. Learn to hold your fall rate and heading. On the ground teaching - get to know the people that teach the AFF ground school. Ask them if you can sit in on the course, as often as you can, and help with the training aids. Practice teaching the course at home, to nobody, but as if you were teaching new jumpers yourself. Remember the questions the students ask - and the proper way to answer them. One thing you will have to teach that is probably not in the first jump course - how to spot. Come up with a good lesson plan for that and practice it until it's routine. Then there's what it takes to be a good coach. I've been coaching for three years, and I still don't think I'm at the level of good yet. I would recommend taking a canopy course if you haven't already. Canopy skills are probably the most important thing you can impart to a pre-A license student. Once you are a coach, keep helping out with the first jump course - at this point you can even teach the non-method specific parts of the course. And keep working at the 4-way and tunnel camps to get ready for your AFFI. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
