hmmm. what's interesting about that is that in ontario, while costs might go down to generate solar and wind, the gov't signed 20 year contracts at fixed rates far above anything a reasonable person would have been willing to pay anyways. so it doesnt' matter what it costs to generate, we're overpaying anyways. And of course, the contracts say we can't not accept wind power, even if we don't need it at the time, so we pay our neighbors (New York and mIchigan thank us) to take the excess power off our hands. Of course since there's no manufacturing left in the province, in part at least due to skyrocketing rates of electricity, we have lots of excess power to pay other provinces and states to take off our hands. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

This Week's Routine Multiple Shooting 2/19/13

I totally want one of those. I seem to recall it was mounted on a mercedes. Don't know that it's available as an option anymore. Can't have been that good for the paint. Don't know about if he had more guns, but if the guys he was carjacking had one handy, they may have got him before he took off. Or if they had that handy little thing I saw that used to be available in south africa -- a flamethrower mounted under the car to prevent people approaching the doors... there's still a robust bootleg whiskey industry in certain parts of the US (yee-haw!), You call it a bootleg whiskey industry, some call it holding on to the tradistions of their past... Should background checks include identifying the mentally ill

what about the right of millions of gun owners to enjoy access to their perfectly legal ar-15's? So your enjoyment is more important that the lives of the 22 kids in Newtown. Nice priorities you have. perhaps if we knew that new laws would prevent such things, the millions of law-abiding gun owners might consider it. But since even the legislators don't believe their new law will prevent such a happening, and are merely doing 'something' to look like they're doing 'something', the whole legislation is meaningless as a step forward -- indeed, considering it infringes the rights of the law-abiding millions, it is a step backward. Give us something that 'will' make a difference in preventing such tragedies, and that we can see the benefit of, and we will probably approve them. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone -

they send swat teams up here even when there's just allegations of guns and threats... here's just one local example and it's not the one I was looking for http://www.orilliapacket.com/2010/11/01/farmer-suing-cops-after-his-family-was-allegedly-taken-down-during-raid If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Instead they seem to want to 'see' everyone as a ticking time bomb and remove everyone's access to certain long guns and hand guns. That's even a bigger stretch than trying to 'see' people with mental health issues as being time bombs. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Even if that's what happened at the cabin - and again, we don't know if Dorner or the cops started the fire, I'd point out, again, that the line had been crossed to use deadly force without further notice or attempts to apprehend the suspect. At that point, it's just a matter of method. That being the case, I have no problem with the method being one to minimize the further risk to LEOs by destroying the building in order to kill the suspect inside, as opposed to incurring the risk of an assault by personnel. This was "combat" rules of engagement. Had they had military-grade explosive munitions on hand, I'd have been fine with them using those, too. seems it was your 'combat' rules of engagement that led to the two innocent women being shot at 20+ times -- and lets not forget the 2nd pickup truck which was run off the road and shot up by different officers on their way to the site of the first civilian shootup, either... and your one of the ones who thinks only leo need guns? Someone is Yes, but what you don't do is take away someone's right to buy a rig just because there's a chance they may die jumping. You don't take away someone;s right in many states to ride a motorcycle without a helmet just because there's a chance they may die in an accident. In many states you don't make a person wear a seatbelt when they choose not to wear one, and you don't take away their car over it. Your examples seem to all be making people have something else to make them safer, but for gun control you're trying to take something away from them (even if it is just the right to buy more). Shoddy logic (as I expect from you) combined with a self-serving strawman. Reserves don't prevent every skydiving death completely, yet I'm sure you jump with one. Seat belts don't prevent every senseless traffic fatality completely, but I'm sure you wear one. And dozens of other examples where just because we can't "prevent every [fill in the blank] completely" doesn't mean that we can't make an improvement. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

ummm, there are indeed records of crazy people and felons who own guns. In fact last week I was reading that there was a backlog of 40000 felons who own guns just in california alone that they seem not to want to do much about. And I'm sure that california isn;t alone. I imagine there are thousands like them in most states. It would probably make sense for the gov't to start going after those guns before they try to start taking away the right to buy guns from law-abiding people. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

How do you figure? Do sane people go on murder revenge killing sprees? Paul: It’s been frequently suggested that you put some effort at educating yourself with regard to: (1) mental illness; (2) criminal behavior/sociopathy; and (3) law. The guy’s manifesto proves it: he knows that what he is doing is wrong and he is doing it anyway to prove a point. There aren’t voices in his head. There isn’t instability. No drug use. Alcoholism. Honorable discharge from the Navy last week. Nobody saw this coming. He planned it. He’s been planning for years. His writing is cogent. Venting but cogent. He explains his feelings and his gripes. He explains how his life was ruined. He explains that his life is over. These aren’t the disjointed rantings of a lunatic. They are the written feelings, thoughts and subjective justifications of an iron-willed man who made a plan and worked the plan. He provided warnings to the police that he knows their techniques and he has set up countermeasures to deal with them. His thought processes are logical. And they also reflect a great deal of knowledge on his part. The guy’s setting out to be Rambo – all that’s needed is Col. Troutman out there to say, “I built him.” You think murder is a matter of “insane?” Or a spree murderer insane? Yes, Paul, SANE people go on killing sprees. Sane people kill. Sane people do bad shit. They are usually called “sociopaths.” Ted Bundy? Insane? Nope. Sane and knew just what he was doing. Only he liked it. That doesn’t mean insane. come on, man, you know quade better than that. Anyone that doesn't think the way he thinks is, as far as he's concerned, 'insane'. And that includes you and me... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Joe Biden admits gun control will not stop mass shootings
skypuppy replied to regulator's topic in Speakers Corner
No, that is NOT what Biden said. Just because something is not 100% successful doesn't mean it's useless. Flu vaccine is about 60% effective. Does that mean it's useless? NO, it doesn't. As far as I know, flu vaxine is strongly recommended for seniors and health care workers and perhaps children and others have a choice as to whether or not to use it. You seem to want to take away the choice of someone to own an ar-15. different thing altogether. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. We can stop now. You won the debate. Actually, there's no real reason why a truck couldn't be used to enter a school through a wall, the windowns are big and the wall is not thick enuf to present any real impediment to just driving into it. And there's usually a nice wide paved expanse of asphalt outside the school for him to get a run at it. So if you really just expect to be able to lock the door and be safe, you'd be wrong. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

No The US has a violence problen Yet it is less than many other countries that have few guns 76% of US murders are committed with guns. You CAN figure it out if you really try to overcome your prejudice. Fewer guns does not equate to fewer murders. You need to overcome your prejudice also. You might want to check the statistics on gun ownership and murder rate in developed (first world) nations before making a claim like that. http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/jlpp/Vol30_No2_KatesMauseronline.pdf Read for yourself. I wrote "FIRST WORLD" nations, you know, kind of like us. Not Belarus and Moldovia and Russia. Try Canada, Netherlands, Australia, UK, Sweden, France... last I knew Russia was a pretty advanced country. I'd even say it was a first world country. Should they? Really? Does that seem reasonable to you? That every entry into a government run school should be locked and a person has to be buzzed in? I'll admit the entrance to the area the KIDS are in needs to be secured, but the front office? Really? That makes no sense. The reason the KIDS need to be secured is so strangers don't wander into the school and kidnap or molest or whatever, but the front office? No. That's non-sense. are you familiar with schools? They have things called hallways. generally if you get in the school anywhere, you can use a hallway to get pretty much anywhere inside the building.... Many rooms off the hallways are not locked (washrooms, for instance, but also sometimes the gym, the library, or various classrooms that are occupied... That is indeed the australian experience. In his autobiography John Howard stated that the Port Arthur massacre was NOT the genesis of his weapons ban. He stated he had always believed that guns should not be available to civilians and he saw the Port Arthur massacre as providing him the 'opportunity' to carry out his wishes...
