  1. points But he called me a bad word! bwaaaaaaaaaa! -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
  2. My original post in this thread stated that I think smoking is a disgusting habit and that I am not attracted to girls that smoke. That was and is my point. Notice that this is not self-righteous because I have made no judgement on you or any other smoker, I expressed my personal preference. Read my posts carefully and you will not see any statement about anyone in this thread or any statement about the personalities of individual smokers. Do not put words in my mouth. Oh, wait, I get it. You don't like me saying that smoking is disgusting. You don't like me indirectly criticizing you for having a disgusting habit. And you consider this self-righteous. Well, that's just too bad. You don't have a right not to be criticized, but you do have a right to ignore it. You also don't have a right to call anyone names. And I still think that you see a self-rightousness in my words (even though you don't know me and can't hear me) because you know I'm right, and this bothers you. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 3. I've only met a handful of smokers that would deliberately blow smoke in my direction. They were all underage. Cheers, man. Except for personal attacks, I'm outta here. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 4. I understand and agree. I do not walk around in life and tell people who smoke to quit smoking. I've only done it twice, first with my father (tried to get him to quit, didn't work), and second with my exgirlfriend (tried to tell her not to start, didn't work). Keep in mind that I spend a lot of time with both, and I'm asthmatic. This is a discussion on smoking. I've given my opinion. I haven't told anyone to quit. As long as I'm not explicitly speaking to you, you have as much a right to ignore me talking as I have a right to ignore you smoking. It's obvious that many smokers on this board are bitter, and no matter what I say I will incite a fight, so unless someone calls me an "arrogant fuck" again I'll stay away. Suffice to say that when I finally get to meet Lisa in person, I will be very happy to see her, smoking or not. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 5. I think your knowledge that the people who encourage you to quit are right is contributing to you perceiving this as such an attitude. Let me repharse this. Can someone tell you to quit smoking in such a way as he will not have a "mightier-than-thou self-righteous attitude"? If not, then the attitude is in your head. And don't call me names, either. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
  6. Strictly speaking that is true. However, with many cases the objective cost overwhelms the subjective benefit so much that this objection, while formally correct, becomes unreasonable. I don't have a problem with smokers who admit that their "habit" that is so difficult to break is actually an addiction. But smokers who smoke regularly, know it's bad for them, agree that there is no overwhelming benefit, and justify their lack of attempts at quitting by any other means I do not agree with. Especially smokers who metaphorically plug their ears when someone tells them they should quit. "You have no right to tell me things" is not a valid argument. Smoking occasionally I'm ambiguous towards. It's not really harmful, so they don't really need to quit, but they shouldn't have started it in the first place. As to the people who smoke, I don't mind occasional smokers at all. Chronic smokers I will be friends with, but I will not stay around them when they're smoking and I will not be anything more than friends with a chronic smoker, addiction or not. C'est la vie. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
  7. Calm down, Lisa, you misread me. Absolutely. My father is a prime example. It has also been proven in a court of law. It still doesn't make smoking any better, and it makes good education and good parenting even more important. People need to be prevented from starting to smoke, from putting even one cigarette in their mouths, because examples of the slippery slope are abundant. Unfortunately, this doesn't work with many people, and all you can hope is that they are naturally resistant to the addiction. Trust to luck, so to speak. I understand, and my post was filled with bitter irony. Of course, you can't "hear" bitter irony over the internet, hence the misunderstanding. What I meant is "I wish I could help you quit, and if I knew you personally I would try, but the only thing I can tell you over the internet is that you need to quit." Me too. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
  8. Sad but true. It's difficult to give constructive criticism with smoking though. I've never heard a reasonable argument that justifies the cost vs benefit of smoking. There's practically nothing you can say in defense of it. So the only constructive criticism is "quit, and quit ASAP". If you know the person well, you could help with the quitting, but here on the internet you really can't. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy.
