Cessna Skymaster Jump?
obelixtim replied to FlyingRhenquest's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah, but on the ground the engine can cool down slowly. A rapid cooling after a climb (plane at altitude) can ping cylinders. (Not sure how the rear mounted engine is cooled, but a cold airflow in flight might do damage) Its not like there is a lot of jumping done out of them. Not known as a "mixer" for nothing. Not sure if shutting down a hot engine is that good for it either. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
Agreed. One might be a fluke, but three on the same drop??? I bet the ground crews were running for cover..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

I believe a lot of this comes from poor instructors, who are very negative in the way they train, and don't explain things well. Most instructors have no formal training in how to teach and how individuals learn and assimilate information. And AFF is a pretty complicated process, both to train and to learn. Simplicity is the key to building confidence. As an instructor I am always very aware of how the student is reacting to me, both during the instruction process and during the ride to altitude. I always make the student aware that I, as an instructor have confidence in them, which is the case, because I won't let anyone near the aircraft if I think they have doubts about what to do. Not saying this is the case here, but IMO many individuals who are great skydivers, are crap instructors. Refusing is not common, but doesn't preclude a successful skydiving career. Have a search on here for "Tail o' the Rat", a great cartoon series penned by Jennifer which put feelings of a new skydiver into visual form brilliantly. I wonder what she is up to these days. Just when you think you're on top of the world...
obelixtim replied to Nataly's topic in The Bonfire
I did and do listen. I took in all of the information, and as anyone does weighed in ALL of the information before me and chose to give higher importance to what the people closest to me were saying. You HAVE to do this in life, otherwise you'd never believe in anything and/or would develop a paranoia about *eveything*. If everyone listened to every nay-sayer, no one in their right mind would EVER get married, buy a house, have children... And yet despite all the reasons NOT to do these things, some people choose to believe that against all odds, things might work out. And, occasionally (thank goodness), they do. So YES, there were signs. Signs I did not see at first (partly through ignorance, and partly through choice - as you rightly pointed out). Again, it is a good lesson to be more careful in future... I am learning a lot from the experience... I think it's *great* that there are people like you who don't sugar-coat their views. You should CONTINUE to do this. But again, when someone devotes so much time and effort to manipulating you, it is a little too easy in hindsight to say "you should have listened to the minority who thought things were going a little fast." That is the equivalent to saying we should have listened to the people who warned us about the housing crisis... Because those folks existed. But billions of people were wrong and a handful were right. And in that handful there were nutcases who were just paranoid and they did not in fact have the first clue what they were talking about (but they happened to be right). So yes. Hindsigt is 20/20. There warning signs WERE there. It took me about 3 months to start really seeing them and a further 2 months to start really believing it and I am still discovering things that are scary and unpleasant to deal with. Last night was another rude awakening and the police had to get involved and although I have heard time and time again that domestic violence and/or harassment is an issue that is largely ignored by the police, I can assure you that *living* it is something else entirely. You hear about women who get killed by their partners and seeing how little the police cared/reacted last night is a frightening experience. (He knocked on my door and would not leave and hovered around in the village all night and at no point did the police come despite being called out. And he is a *known* violent offender.) Not fun. This morning I am afraid to leave the house and hop on my bike to get to work. Also not fun. So yeah. Keep telling me what an idiot I was for not listening... It's NOT nice, but it actually is helpful... Maybe not at this point for me, but perhaps for someone else. These guys are cowards who rely on no one knowing what they are up to, and in many cases people don't report them or tell anyone what is going on, for whatever reason, so their behaviour continues. Keep a diary of incidents, dates, times and events, this will make your case with the cops stronger, or if you have to take out a restraining order on him. Get a few male friends to phone him up and warn him off, even threaten him with violence (bluff or for real, but he doesn't know that) if he keeps bothering you. Give him something to worry about and his focus will be deflected, especially if he doesn't know the people who are calling him out... I've done that for a few ex girlfriends who were being bothered and the problem ceased. Alternatively open the door to him and greet him with a pot of boiling water in the face. There are a hell of a lot of married people living a life of misery, but who can't put an end to it for a variety of reasons. (kids, appearances, etc etc) Seeing the people wars that go down when divorce or seperation breaks out makes many single people thank their lucky stars. Being single does not disqualify anyone from relationships, nor does it prevent them from seeing people broken from bad relationships. Nah, stay single. You are in control, you can do what you like, when you like, with who you like, without all the drama, or having to answer or explain yourself. And you don't have to live on an emotional roller coaster. There is a lot to be said for independence. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -

I know a lot of guys younger than me who have retired. When they clocked 10000 tandems I guess they got bored, and decided to do other stuff. 10000 seems to be the acceptable number, its a lot of jumps. I think the body will tell people when enough is enough. When you hit 60 things start getting a bit more difficult. Don't think there should be an age related limit on it though. A valid medical is important. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Man loses leg after shooting lawn mower full of explosives
obelixtim replied to gowlerk's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't know nuttin about blowing stuff up, but tannerite on its own would likely be a lot better than combining it with the lawn mower. I will guess that it wasn't overpressure or anything from the tannerite, but chunks of lawnmower that messed up his legs. He might as well have added a bag of nails and ball bearings to the mower... From the article, the local Sheriff says: I guess the ISIS terrorists don't have to stress themselves about blowing up people in the US when these idiots do it themselves.... I wonder what Donald Chump has to say about it? My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -

Must read for every skydiver......
obelixtim replied to obelixtim's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That illustrates the point perfectly, as does the vid of the base jumper who forgot his pilot chute, and the pic of the guy with the sideways canopy (one I've not seen before, the lines have been attached to the risers incorrectly.....) How DO these things happen? Carelessness, ignorance, inattention, complacency. But mostly STUPIDITY!!! No excuse for this nonsense, and no place in skydiving. I am just amazed there aren't more fatalities. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
+1 The Mk 1 eyeball works pretty well. Also someone on the dive (the base) is designated to control the breakoff, so that person keeps an eye on altitude and waves off at breakoff time. That's RW 101..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Counter suing is prolly pointless, you can't get blood out of a stone. Although if they can get a lien on her house it might solve the problem once and for all. Stupid woman. Doesn't know when to let go. I wonder how long it will take her supporters in CQS to jump ship. Some of them must be getting a bit twitchy, especially if their assets are on the line as well. Must read for every skydiver......
obelixtim replied to obelixtim's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My point was not so much about the detail of the incident itself, but more about the factors which can lead to jumpers missing the apparently obvious. These points he made are something I think every skydiver, no matter their experience level, should ponder and assimilate, and perhaps come up with strategies to warn them, or set off an alarm bell in their brain when they find themselves in similar situations (like many repetitive types of jumps or behaviours) when we tend to get a little lazy or sloppy over time. In this particular case, it would be nice to think some other jumper on the load might have noticed the problem, but its a classic example of others not "seeing" because the jumper himself, being highly competent, would not be expected to mess up. An inexperienced jumper might also feel a bit shy about pointing something out to more experienced people. Something as simple as giving others on the load a more careful scrutiny before loading or on the way to altitude could be one thing everyone could do, for example... I've caught more than one person in the plane with misrouted chest straps, but its the kind of thing I'm always looking out for, its a simple mistake, but with potentially deadly consequences. We need to look out for each other. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
Must read for every skydiver......
obelixtim replied to obelixtim's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I called it a must read simply because it is a classic example of a simple error made by an experienced jumper, which is a lesson everyone can take. Skydiving is easy, but its important that people develop thinking skills to go with it. His list of cognitive biases is not something your average jumper would necessarily be aware of. It is food for thought, especially for newbies coming up through the ranks, or experienced jumpers who have not had the benefit of a tertiary education in the field of cognitive development, as some of us have. Kudos to the jumper in question for being honest with himself, I know a lot of egocentric jumpers who would try to shift blame to someone else, the packer in this case, for example. http://www.flightsafetyaustralia.com/2016/03/three-ring-mistake/ Although this was a tandem jump, the thoughts behind it apply to everyone. An excellent piece of writing. Edit. Edit: It doesn't want to open, but if you highlight it, copy the link and open it in a new address bar it seems to. Maybe someone better than me can make it a clicky. 2nd edit. The jumper in question here goes under the FB name: Thomas Freefall If you look at his home page he is jumping a Sigma tandem rig. I wonder how UPT feel about that! OK. Yesterday I posted a comment on their FB page to the effect that I thought the TM was a moron, and so were they for allowing it.....got a response from a Ju Fwi whose wife is the DZO there. Apparently the TM is a very intelligent man who has been doing this for 3 years with no problems! The camera is attached with magnets, so would come off in an entanglement situation. The DZO is apparently OK with it! No thought about what would happen when the stick smacks the TM in the face. I posted a response criticizing their operation for endangering their clients, and pointing out how they are out of step with the rest of the world with this, and asking why they don't use hand cam or FF camera. Also asked why the TM does no drogue or handle checks. That post was very quickly deleted from their FB page. A jumper Brice Bernier then butted in abusing me for impoliteness. Anyone know if this would be allowed in France? Because I very much doubt it. This could be quite a bit of fun winding them up. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

He's obviously a real expert....didn't even have to check his drogue after pitching, and handle checks were an afterthought.... Problem is, someone else will think this is a cool idea and copy it. Edited to add: I just went on their (DZ) facebook page and made a comment about it. I'm sure they will translate it into French easily enough.
