  1. If you say so....... But, on another note: A quote from one of my earlier posts. I thought you might respond....disappointed you didn't, but maybe you missed it. Did I answer it correctly? My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  2. I think you miss his point. Ever heard the expression "holier than thou"? Or "casting stones". Stay cool man...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  3. Do you think that Douggs did no gear checks on the jumpers he was helping? And the analogy I posited about an unauthorised jump on your DZ. How would you react to that if someone criticized you? My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  4. Well this thread has now turned to shit seeing the mods are wielding their blunt axe. Lets just forget it shall we. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  5. It is all very well to talk about a "higher" standard, like gear checks, and it is relatively easy to mandate these things in a DZ situation where you have a lot of control over what is going on. It is rather more difficult to do so in an uncontrolled environment when there is no way to sanction anyone who doesn't want to comply, or even listen to advice. How would you deal with that? There are no rules, requirements, licences, ratings or experience levels mandated to allow someone to jump off a bridge, or control people who do. Anyone can do it. Is that difficult to understand? Even in skydiving there are plenty of people who challenge accepted best practice....pencil packing, jump number faking, wing loading, hook turners and the current Tandem controversy as a few examples.....and as a DZO, its tricky trying to keep on top of all that, as you would know. It is almost impossible to cover all bases 100%, even in a controlled DZ environment. In this case, I'm sure Dougg did have an organised safety system in place to cater for the people he was helping. You could see him doing exactly that with several people he was helping in the video. And he was rightly focussed on them. He doesn't have eyes in the back of his head. Then along comes Bozo who shows up and climbs over the rail without asking or telling anyone what he was up to. Its obvious Dougg didn't even know him, and he wasn't part of Douggs group. That is all people on here are saying. He was very lucky Dougg was on to it enough to catch him before he jumped. An analogy would be a random plane overflying your DZ, someone jumping from it, unannounced, and bouncing. Would that be your responsibility or fault? Would you accept that? I think not. 6. Looks like a snag issue to me. Not if he has mad skillz, and is really cool. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  7. You've seen them around the hot women that show up at the DZ? My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  8. No dog in this fight. But. Maybe its because the buck stops with him. As the boss he is responsible for what goes on at his DZ. Whether he is aware or not of what has been happening. If you are in a position of responsibility, ignorance is not an excuse. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  9. If you put a mirror in a plane, the pilots will spend their time doing their hair, touching up their makeup, squeezing their pimples........ Bad move. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  10. Just like to point out my intention in posting this video was to see if there were lessons to be learned from this, NOT to start a shit fight that detracts from that... Base jumping is unregulated, skydiving is not. Different beasts from that POV. Some things are common to both. And even though skydiving is much easier to control, and you can have the best safety systems in the world, you can't legislate against stupidity. And skydiving has seen plenty of that. 11. That is all fine. Not sure why you are getting your knickers twisted though. The impression coming across from your posts, is that while you care about human life, no one else does. Which is clearly not the case. Dougg saved an idiot from certain death. In such an unstructured situation, where he and others were clearly busy, I think he did pretty good job caring for that guy.. For that he deserves a pat on the back. (and a case of beer) I'm sure the lesson he takes will be to keep a very close eye on anyone who just shows up unannounced in the future. 12. So one lesson to repeat for the skydiving community, is the importance of getting a gear check by another set of eyes, and keeping an eye on others. I know there are people out there who don't think a gear check is important, 'because I can look after myself just fine, and I'm not an idiot'. It doesn't matter who you are, or how much experience you have, it only takes one mistake and you are playing dice with the Reaper.... 13. And bought Dougg beer. Lots of beer... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  14. I would suggest in this unstructured situation, no one has any authority to stop another person doing what they like. Anyone can buy a rig and jump off whatever they like, at any time they like. Telling the guy he should go home and sell his gear would be about the limit of what you could do. 15. Do we know why these two individuals had their ratings suspended in the first place? If they were legal and legit in the first place, what happened to change that status? My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  16. I notice the guy didn't forget to turn his camera on. Pity he'd turned his brain off a bit earlier. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  17. There s a world of difference between a spinning roundie and a spinning square. But yes, you had to figure out the direction of the spin. A spin under a roundie would prolly be regarded as a gentle turn under a square these days. They spun up a bit faster when military surplus rounds were replaced by sport rounds. That's when cutting away and pilot chutes on reserves came into fashion. In the early days of squares only the most experienced were allowed to jump a square for that reason. 18. I thought it was a classic example of how people who get caught up in the moment can do the most mind blowingly stupid things. This applies to skydiving. The failure to do up chest straps properly is a classic example, and there was a case a few years ago when a tandem rider undid their leg straps in the plane (snap hook attachments) because it was uncomfortable...was caught when moving to the door. Not so sure if the "organiser" as you put it was actually an organiser at all, seems like it was just casual jumping off the bridge, and the guy just climbed over the rail while the others were focussed on the action. I'm sure everyone learned a lesson though. I am sure the words of advice to get off the bridge were well meant!!! My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  19. https://www.facebook.com/darijan.cerin/videos/10210095808489301/ Bridge jump save. Lesson in awareness. Can someone make this a clicky. Cheers. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  20. You don't normally have a choppable reserve unless you have a specially set up rig. Your tertiary reserve would be a round with no pilot chute, which you hand deploy yourself. Hang glider pilots carry this type of system, with slight variations.. That's how it used to be done back in the day when people jumped cheapos...interesting when dealing with a total. Not so good with a spinning mal. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  21. Used to be a requirement for a D licence that you had to have had a cutaway. If you hadn't had one for real, you had to do an intentional. Most people didn't get to that level without a real chop. The exercise was more to do with actually experiencing a cutaway in the air rather than the reserve ride. (Riding a round reserve is not that big a thrill). We had a rig that could take two mains, with two sets of capewells, and a normal front mounted reserve. Normal practice was to static line the first canopy so you didn't have to worry about a ripcord in your hand, exit higher than normal, then chop that canopy. It became a normal jump at that point. It was a good rig to test canopies, I did several on damaged canopies to see how they would behave, and it was great for demo jumps. I did a dozen or so demos with cutaways, which always went down well with the crowd, who prolly thought I was really brave (more likely crazy), but in reality it was no big deal at all. I'm not that fussed about putting my life on the line. You could prolly make up a similar system with an old tandem rig. Riggers....over to you. 24. Most canopies of that era were multi use, RW, Accuracy, CRW. Comets were pretty average as far as canopies went, there were quite a few designs that came out with fanfare but proved to be dogs in the long run...the Unit for example. A lot of FF jumps were followed by canopy hook ups, and the V bridle was a hazard for CRW jumps. When CRW became popular most canopies came out with single point attachments, collapsible and retractable pilot chutes. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
