Estimating Temperature @ Altitude??
darkvapor replied to Ducky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You can try this: http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/atmos.html Not sure how accurate that is for altitudes we are working with. Under the "international standard atmosphere" sea level temperature is 59F, and drops 3.5°F per thousand feet. Jumping at SD Atlanta, I've been doing hop'n'pops and CRW jumps lately, and I have not had any problems with temperature (wearing t-shirt, long pants, and gloves). In fact, it is quite comfortable for me. On the other hand, my hands were incredibly numb when I tried to do the same thing in December. During the Geogia summer months, I wouldn't worry about it. I've easily gone up with shorts and a t-shirt and didn't notice the cold. -
Sigh, everytime I decide to buy something, I always spend a whole week neglecting school just to play with options and pick colors. I decided to make a collection of possible ideas, some of them good, some of them bad. I would appreciate some feedback of your favorite designs. This is going to be for a PD Lightning 160. Keep in mind it's a CRW canopy, and needs to look appropriate. We can also use this thread to paste your own favorite designs.. ;) http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gtg096b/lightning/

Hehe.. well.. maybe.. but I'm 21 and most car rental places have a min age of 25. That.. and I have to take care of my baby before the week starts. First thing tomorrow morning.. a wrecker is coming to take her to a dealership... I'm almost positive that it is a crankshaft position sensor. I tried to read the error code of the car (by reading the number of times the "check engine" light comes on.. but there are short pauses, medium pauses, and long pauses, and I am having a hard time figuring out when one code ends and the next begins.. I need a real computer scanner to plug my car into... I guess i will spend the 4th of july alone..

hrmm.. thats the kinda info i need.. anyone else have little hints like that?
-
Hrmm.. good point.. that way i might be able to make it by sunset load on sunday... if i don't get killed walking with a 30lb gear bag along a major interstate for 55 miles..

Not really.. my dad and I really do think it is an ignition only problem... plus.. I don't really know a good way to test the fuel system without tearing it apart.. doing a little google searching turned up the following that does NOT sound good... i think we did as much as we could without taking it to a shop... i was just hoping that someone who knows cars well knows a quickfix or something... edited: not a QUICK fix.. a GOOD fix.. hehe.. this car has 102k miles on it.. only 1 problem so far.. and that could have been predicted by someone who knows about jeeps...

Help! I got all my gear ready.. stowed it in my car... go to start the car... rarararararara nothing... Did the basic check... fuel is good.. oil is good.. fluids are good... battery is good... power distribution fuses are good... no visible problems with the engine.... drove my 1995 jeep grand cherokee (6cyl) yesterday.. everything was running perfectly.. after a call to my dad and messing around another 45 minutes under the hood.. we determined that the spark plugs are not firing... tried to trace it as far back as we could... pretty much stopped at the starter coil.. which i suppose looks okay (but don't know if its actually firing). the starter motor is good.. the engine starts out as if its about to fire.. but never does... oil gauge in the car is indicating that the oil pressure is rising as the car is trying to start.. any ideas/ unfortunately, its not going to be easy to find a dealership shop open on the 4th of july.. and it looks like i am stuck here at home with my rig all ready to jump.. :( HELP! Gimme some ideas that I can explore to see if I can get my car started and atleast get to the dropzone today..

Run the program by going through the Start menu. Start -> Programs -> Lavasoft Ad-Aware 6 -> Ad-Aware 6. Then when the program opens go to "Check for Updates Now." Let it install the the newest update it finds, and go back to the main program screen. Then click "Start." The default options should be good. Then just let it run. This may take a few minutes. When its done, just go through all the prompts saying Yes or Next. You will get to a screen that has the results of the scan. You can see what it thinks is bad. I think Ad-Aware is pretty good at leaving legitimate programs alone, so you can almost ignore what it says. Just let it quarantine the files it found. If your computer doesn't break from what this program removed (it shouldn't) you can delete the quarantined files later (should be an option to see quarantined archives from the main screen).

Just click on it, right? If it has an EXE extension, Windows will recognize it as an executable. Double clicking on it will execute the program. Or you can right click it once to bring up some choices, such as executing it ("Open"), or checking its properties. edited: You can look at the properties of the file you got and make sure it says "Application" under "Type of File". Make sure the file name also ends in .EXE, although that should be the case unless you accidently renamed it to some other type of file.

Your computer doesn't recognize executable files? I've never seen that. Did you lose the .EXE extension or something? Your using a recent version of Windows (98/2k/XP)? Edited: Just to make sure we are on the right page, you got the following executable right? It should be called AAW6.EXE. If not, get it from http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/0,fid,7423,fileidx,1,00.asp

It looks like you opened the executable in a text editor. If you are using Windows, then you do not need any shell. Just execute the program and follow the prompts.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ I'd also look into installing a personal firewall. I want to know everything that is coming into and leaving my computer. A good firewall will keep those programs from accessing the internet and sending out data about you. http://www.firewallguide.com/

Line Stows/Locking Stows, couple questions...
darkvapor replied to andy2's topic in Gear and Rigging
It's not entirely accurate to link energy and acceleration. Acceleration is the time derivative of velocity, ie change of velocity / change in time. Change being the key word. Acceleration is acceleration, regardless if it is a positive or negative value. 'Deceleration' is just a term to note negative acceleration, but there is no difference otherwise. No one uses the term deceleration in engineering and sciences, it is a layman's term. -
http://www.typingtest.com/ Pretty good Java based speed test I just found. My results were 75 WPM.

From Atair's Website This isolates the canopy into 3 sections: center, and the two sides. In most canopies, as the center pressurizes, the pressure is also distributed to adjacent cells through cross ports in the ribs. In the Cobalt, there are no cross ports between the center and the sides. Therefore, the center will open and pressurize first, and the sides will take longer to pressurize since they are not assisted. Well, although rigs were originally designed for belly to earth, many people do not spend their skydives belly to earth. The ability to deploy at a faster speed, as claimed by Atair, is a safety issue, mostly in the case of a premature main deployment or accidental deployment head down (documented in recent accidents as well as non-fatal events). Deployment head down can be catastrophic to both equipment and jumper. Since the Cobalt decelerates before it opens completely, it is claimed to be safer.

So... a matter of insurance. Getting liability insurance for a bike along the lines of a CBR600 isn't all that bad. However, adding comprehensive and collision makes the yearly total to roughly 3000$. Collision is the biggest part, making up about 2/3 of the cost of the insurance. So my question is... is collision insurance necessary? How much are non-totalled bike repairs? I would think that it wouldn't be too bad, since most damage would be cosmetic anyways. But then comes the issue of 'what if I total the bike'. Without collision insurance, it would be a personal hit. I know this is a personal decision, but what are ya'll opinions. How have you insured your bikes? edited: oh yea.. what about comprehensive? its a decent sized chunk of the total insurance cost, and i would certainly would like to be able to recoup my losses if some moron decides to steal my bike. also, these rates seem pretty high to me. they are for a 21 year old with a very good record. i decided to play with the numbers. if i made myself 25, overal cost would drop to about 2200$, so a moderate drop, but not huge. its actually cheaper to insure a 1100cc BMW than it is this 600cc honda. i did these insurance numbers on progressive.com. i will probably get a better deal when if i use my regular insurance agent at statefarm, since i have a good history with them.

I'm not a fan of that styling. I like the look of the Ducati 620 sport though.. Is that in the same performance class as a CBR600 or much higher or lower?
