  1. Something Wolfriverjoe pointed out got me thinking. All of these school shootings were carried out by people of school age. So why are we looking at the entire firearm owning populous when the problem is mentally unstable teenagers? This being the case then maybe the affordable solution is easy free access to mental healthcare for school and college kids. After all surely the teachers know who in their class is socially excluded and warped. Restricting unsupervised access to firearms for people under 20 might be more useful than banning 30 round mags. 2. In the California incident, the students that were shot were Asian immigrants. Purdy was a racist xenophobe. Columbine, Paarl, San Deigo, Cleveland were all students that did the shooting. I don't know about this latest one. Thanks, in which case by removing unsupervised access to firearms to people in school would be a very good move. If the majority of these shootings are being perpetrated by youth then it makes little sense to try and remove the firearms from the hands of those least likely to misuse them. 5. question on any observation at this point is correlation vs cause vs effect.....but you pretty much come to the point of responsible ownership requires training and periodic reassessments seems that would be something the NRA could offer that would be constructive Totally agree When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. 6. Not that I really think it would happen but if the POTUS managed to ban AR15s would the cops find themselves in street fights with the populous when they went to confiscate them? 7. I think you are correct, however I also think its the fact that all those assault rifles are held by trained soldiers reservists who require periodical update training. If someone were unstable they'd soon be relinquished of their long. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. 8. Certainly I believe that plays a part but I don't think its the only answer. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
  9. They don't have guns in schools and have more assault weapons than you can shake a stick at (Proper ones too) so why don't the Swiss have these mass school shootings? Me thinks culture. 11. That retarded polarised view of the world is really not helping America. This whole problem is about grey areas. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
  12. The Swiss don't need to carry them in the first place, they live in a law abiding civilised society. But this isn't about the Swiss, lets keep it on topic. How do you stop crazy people from committing mass murder with firearms? You can attack the availability of firearms but why not try and improve access to mental health care and catch these people before the valve bursts in the first place. 13. This is the US version of saying well it says this is how we must live in the Koran/Torah/Bible without taking in to account that it was written hundreds of years ago. 14. Its interesting to note that outside of the USA in first world countries that allow firearm ownership its for the purpose of either hunting or target shooting not self defence. Protection of society is seen as the job of the police. Even before the handgun ban in the UK you couldn't carry or own for self defence. Switzerland comes to mind as being directly against that. Not at all. In Switerland men are armed because they are in the millitary reserve and part of the Army it is the Army's job to defend the nation. Those assault rifles are their not for self defence but for defence of the nation, there is a very big difference. 15. I'd agree with you but add a overly hegemonic national self image which is reflected in the media. People can't live up to the expectations place upon them and so begins societal alienation. 16. Why the hysteria over .50 Cal weapons? It just shows that these people really don't understand the capability of other firearms (which is just as well otherwise they'd never leave their houses!) 17. What you propose would end hunting. Most AR 15's are .223 caliber and that isn't a very high powered round. It's not suitable for hunting deer. Nope. My understanding is hunting existed for several years before the AR-15 was invented. Single action bolt to boot. And this is exactly my point. A single bullet would be allowed that is much more powerful than the AR-15, but the total amount of kinetic energy, not per round, but per minute would be what would be considered. So taking the proposal into consideration what level of energy per minute would the cut off point be at? In the UK we can't have semi automatic centre fire weapons but rimfire is Ok as are straight pull centre fire. Yet straight pull rifles can be pretty quick in the right hands and .22 ammo is still lethal in the sort of range that these mass murders tend to take place in. Where do you draw the line? 19. The firearm is simply the tool its the person using it that makes it deadly or not. Charles Witman killed all but 4 of his victims using bolt action rifles. 16 dead, 32 wounded. JFK killed with a bolt action rifle. RFK killed with a .22 round commonly referred to derisively as a plinking round. 21. And yet there was pretty free access to guns back then and the 70s & 80s... So what changed in the USA that things came to this? When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
