  1. It looks like I'll only be taking Chemistry II this semester because the other classes I wanted to take are full. (I seem to have been bumped to the back of the line for registration appointments.)
  2. I understand that most people just think of the convenience of having it in grocery stores. But for an alcoholic who is trying to quit drinking, a trip to the grocery store is an easy way to relapse when there is alcohol all over the store, and most people cannot simply avoid grocery stores. Now I realize the same could be said for people who are trying to lose weight or give up caffeine or whatever; they too have temptations all over the grocery store. But when they give into their temptations, they are not putting other people in danger, as is often the case with an alcoholic. Anyhow, I don't expect it to change here in California. Liquor is available in pretty much every grocery store and is usually displayed prominently throughout the store. Oh well... It does make it easier for me to pick up a bottle of booze when I feel like having some, and that's all that really matters.
  3. I'm not sure how you would know that, other than DWI rates, or perhaps other alcohol-related arrest rates too. But my opinion is not based on statistics (I don't believe it's possible to have accurate statistics regarding alcoholism). It's just based on my own experience. And obviously anyone who really wants alcohol will just go to the liquor store to get it, but I do think that keeping it out of the grocery stores would make a small difference in the problem. (Just my opinion, of course. I suspect that most people will not agree with me.)
  4. I did that on purpose just because I felt like being nice to someone today. I didn't really mean it though.
  5. Oh yeah, I forgot we were talking about the media in this thread. You're probably right that they often misuse the term.
  6. No. I only use the term when I am referring to someone who has a strong aversion to homosexuality, and that's how I mostly see the term used. I occasionally see it used the way you are describing, but not very often.
  7. My conclusion is based on my own experience with alcoholism and knowing that alcohol in the grocery store presents an unnecessary problem for those who are trying to give it up. As for those statistics, I'm not sure how they would know how many people have a drinking problem in each state.
  8. I used a dictionary, and one of the definitions for phobia is "A strong fear, dislike, or aversion." I know that it is most often used to describe a fear of something, but that is not it's only meaning.
  9. As a non-religious person, I agree that alcoholic beverages should not be sold in grocery stores. I think that restricting it to liquor stores would help at least a little bit with society's alcohol abuse problems, and it would only be a mild inconvenience to those who wish to purchase it.
  10. I hear it's a good place to go on a massive cocaine binge.
  11. You can rant about your neighbors here too: http://www.rottenneighbor.com/ Mine are all ok.
  12. I haven't read it, but it looks interesting. Thanks for the link. I like this quote. Though I seem to pay a lot more attention to the second half of it.
  13. Well duh! I think you answered that for yourself. If you need a hint, is has something to do with Armani suits and cocopops (whatever those are). (Wow, I sound really stupid by saying "Well duh!")
  14. Well, to decide that a monogamous relationship is best would be going against the scientific evidence that shows that humans are not designed to be monogamous. So I think that even scientific-minded people tend to do things (or believe in things) that do not have any scientific basis, or that may even go against scientific findings.
  15. I think that all four of them are asleep right now. Haven't seen 'em in a while . . .
  16. 2007 was definitely not one of the best years of my life. I'm hoping this year will be better, but I'm feeling a little bit lost at the moment, and I'm not sure which direction I want to go in. I can't say that I am particularly happy right now, but at least I am feeling grateful for what I have (mostly my family and friends), and I guess I have no real complaints.
  17. Exactly. The ethanol in tequila is no different than the ethanol in beer. I think the perception might be there because people tend to drink different types of alcohol in different ways. For example, a person might sip beer when they drink it and just get a mild buzz. But when they drink tequila, they might do it in shots, which would make them get drunk a lot faster. So they might be more likely to get mean when they drink tequila because they usually get a lot more drunk when they drink it. And then they associate tequila but not beer with getting mean, when it's really just too much alcohol that makes them mean.(?)
  18. After writing that, it occurs to me that beer (I can't believe you don't have that on the list!) makes me more irritable than any other type of alcohol. Because it usually just gives me a headache, makes me feel tired and bloated, and makes me wish I had some real alcohol.
  19. I don't need alcohol to make me mean. I'm just a bitch anyway. I'm usually a pretty happy drunk, but if I do happen to get pissed off while drinking, then I'm likely to be a lot more irrational than if I was sober. Doesn't matter which type of alcohol though.
  20. Perhaps I misunderstood what you guys were getting at, but it sounded as if you were saying that a scientist should approach all aspects of his/her life from a scientific perspective and throw out any beliefs that can not be upheld with empirical evidence... or something like that? In which case something like monogamy wouldn't make sense, since research shows it to be unnatural for humans (just a product of society, similar to religion). Not believing in monogamy does not mean that someone will cheat on me. They would only be cheating on me if they lied to me about it.
  21. It does contradict the evidence that shows that we were not designed to be monogamous.
  22. Well, sicence is the developement of knowledge based on empirical observation and rational deduction whereas religion is revealed knowledge maintained in spite of empirical observation and rational deduction. It seems to be fairly obvious that if you adhere to one methodology, you'd have a difficult time adhereing to the other one simultaneously. So I guess a scientist should also not believe in something such as having a monogamous relationship, since most evidence seems to indicate that humans are not biologically meant to be monogamous?
  23. That's what I was thinking while reading this thread. It's odd to me that Scientology is considered insane by the mainstream in the U.S., while Christianity is considered to be normal. (Well, I guess from a historical point of view, I understand it. But from a logical point of view, I don't.)
  24. One of the Urban Dictionary definitions of "homicide bomber" is "A phrase used solely by the Fox News organization in an attempt at making themselves sound completely retarded." I never watch or read Fox News. Maybe I'll try it sometime when I'm really bored. At least they seem to give people something to talk about it.
