Decline and fall of the American empire?
CanuckInUSA replied to dreamdancer's topic in Speakers Corner
Every dominate nation in the history of humanity has fallen. Why should the USA be any different. But I suspect this time around it will be a little different and the entire globe will be effected. China may appear to be poised take over, but China is where they are these days because they made a lot of money off of selling cheap products (cheap in more ways than one) to the USA. If their #1 customer ceases to buy anything from China, and all other nations also cease to buy since the global economy is interconnected. Then where will China find the customers it has relied on for their growth? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
Wow ... how can this happen? Except to say Real Estate Land Titles is incredibly out of date. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

You can't generically compare one object type to another object type. All objects are different and each object has it's own challenges. But if we were to think generically, I would still say that Antennas do not have the same hazards as Earth (call them Big Walls if you must) because the landing areas of Antennas are often larger and more forgiving. When it comes to BASE you have to factor in the entire jump not just the free fall. How do you get up to the exit point? How is your geared configured? What kind of exit do you do? How long before you deploy? Do you need to track away from the object? How high or low will you deploy? What do you do if your deployment is not on heading? What kind of landing area is there? Assuming you land safely, how do you and your jump party get out of the landing area? Finally one person's tolerance for risks in BASE is not the same as another person. Obviously going hand held flat and stable off of a 400 foot cliff is less risky than someone doing a double gainer off of the same exit point. There are just too many variables to think of BASE in generic terms. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I am thinking of doing a double header by watching two of motorsport's three crown jewels of racing in one day. I will wake up at 6:00 am (my local time) to watch Formula One's Monaco Grand Prix and then at 10:00 am (my local time) the Indy 500 starts. The third crown jewel of racing (24 Heures du Mans) does not happen this weekend. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Except that is not a paraglider. It appears to be a specialized "Bullet" speed flyer canopy. In the past when I was more current I have thought about doing this exact same type of launch. But after watching this video, the risk of something going wrong is pretty high. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

It's not BASE nor is it CReW. It's a Ground Launch off of a well known BASE exit point. I am glad to see the canopy inflate. That was as close to a disaster as you want to get. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I don't believe in any man made Gods, so yes I agree with you. The Burble (like the Kaboom and all other similar books) are fiction. But as far as saying there is NO God, how are you so certain there isn't one? I don't think we should artificially worship a God in the hopes that we will be given "Life" after our deaths on this planet. But some time ago something was created out of nothing (the Universe's Big Bang) and while humans will never figure out this mystery, for all we know there is a power greater than we can ever understand that is behind this Big Bang. I have not seen much evidence of Obama sucking up to France (and for sure France gets slammed by the average American more than the UK gets slammed). Here is an observation about our American friends. When you aren't doing anything that annoys them, they just ignore you. It's only when you are doing something they don't like, that they take an interest to you. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

That was a shitty bounce off of the glass, but they happen. It's all part of the game. By the way if you think I am a Canucks fan saying this because they are a Canadian based team think again. I was actually hoping the Sharks would take the series. I hate the Canuckleheads (okay hate is a strong word, but you get the picture). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

This BBC documentary series I referenced stays clear of any political ideology. In fact this documentary appears to give a decent unbias representation of the events of the war (though of course I was not around Germany and Austria/Hungary at the time to get their perspective on the war). This documentary series is not a pro-British or pro-anything. I have watched other war documentaries, in fact I have a CD set on World War II from the American perspective and while it is a pretty thorough collection of what happened in 1939 through 1945. This American view of WWII for some dumb reason mentions nothing about Germany entering Belgum, the Netherlands or Norway during the early years and also mentions nothing about Canada helping to liberate the Netherlands near the end of the war. So as far as I am concerned this American "Complete History of World War II" CD set I have is not so complete. Is this BBC documentary incomplete? I don't know? But it is the most exhaustive account of the "Great War" I have yet to see. BTW ... I will give the YouTube URL you referenced a view when I have some time. Contrary to what you may think, I actually watch more than one news source before I formulate an opinion. Who knows, I may just like the video you referenced. Time will tell. I don't believe in any man made Gods. Because of this, I reject Christianity, Islam, the Jewish faith and all other man made religions. But the Universe is mind boggling. It's origins are just beyond anything we will ever know. Is the Universe just some random occurrence or is there something or someone behind it? We as humans will never know. Because of this I am agnostic and I will never understand why atheists feel they are 100% certain there is nothing behind the Universe. Is there life after death? Probably not. But the creation of the Universe through the "Big Bang" where something was created out of nothing is simply mind boggling. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I would much rather own the home. In fact I do own my home. I was however lucky to buy before my local market took off. But these deductions do not apply to me, I was just thinking about them when others in different thread were talked about estate taxes. So far BillVon and Kelpdiver have given reasons why the deductions exist. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Not sure of the exact figure, but we Canadians do pay a portion of our taxes to keep the British Royals living the life of luxury they have. Tell you what. I won't bring up the British Monarchy in this thread anymore if you promise to stay on topic and discuss "Does deducting the interest on mortgages not lead to an incentive to pay off the mortgage debt". Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Just curious. Does the ability to deduct the interest you pay for your mortgage on your income taxes serve as a influencing factor for never wanting to actually pay off your mortgage? Up here in the frozen Dominion of obedient servants to the British Crown, we are not allowed to deduct the interest we pay on our mortgages (of course we do get to keep 100% of any capital gains on the home if/when it is sold). If I am not mistaken the ratio of people who have paid off their debts on their homes for those of us who suck up to the Queen is much higher than the ratio of those who's descendants gave the British Monarchy the bird several centuries ago. The USA has many other bigger problems, but wouldn't some problems Americans have be less if they paid off their mortgages and not worry so much about their tax deduction? I want nothing to do with a society where governments are allowed to come in and seize the assets of families. Have we not learned enough from history how bad it is when governments seize control of private assets? If new governments revenues need to be raised (assuming government spending is also controlled which it rarely is), then consumption taxes are the best taxes to be raised. When someone wants a new product or a service they can decide for themselves can I afford to pay the consumption taxes. The hated rich will still pay taxes when they buy their mansions, their airplanes, their yachts or their Ferraris. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

In 2006 when I moved out of my Burnaby BC (a suburb of Vancouver) ground floor apartment after only one year being there, I discovered mushrooms growing in the back of my bedroom closet. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Simply amazing how much power you want to give to government to seize private assets from society. How many generations do you think it will take before you succeed in taking everything away from private citizens. You have taken this thread from a "The rich don't pay enough taxes" (which has been proven wrong), to "The rich must be destroyed" with your desire to implement a 90% inheritance tax. You won't come out and say it, but we all know you are a Communist. I have a friend who grew up in Bulgaria while the Communists still ruled that country. When asked "Would you like to go back to living under the old system where government had complete control over your life", the answer is a resounding "Hell No". You may like the idea where everyone is equal in your classless society. But for the people who actually lived under such a society, they do NOT want to go back. Once again, in case you missed it. Yesterday the people of Spain rejected socialism. When Spain rejects socialism, you know something is up. I am sure you will find happiness in North Korea though where everyone is equal. Equally screwed. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I came across a good BBC Documentary on YouTube concerning the "Great War" (made in 1964). In school they did teach us a bit about this war, but after watching this documentary it is amazing how little I actually knew about what went on in Europe and the Middle East in 1914 through to 1918. It's a long series (25 episodes long), so watch it if/when you have some free time. Here is the entry point (Episode One - Part 1 of 4) to this documentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHm7fNDDY9Y Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Of course I know Wendy knows this but I will say it for others: It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than to be in the air wishing you were on the ground. All new skydivers/aviators lust to be in the sky as much as they can (been there, done that). But once people gain some experience they realize there will always be another day to get your fix. Enjoy the skies when you can, but don't ever take to the skies in questionable weather. It could be your demise. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

My banks weren't bailed out. I am not paying for any bank bailouts. In fact my retirement mutual funds benefit whenever the banks (or other industry the funds are invested in) turn a profit. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Yes banks do prey on stupid people. I had a bank call me up the other day wanting me to sign up for one of their latest schemes. They wanted me to sign up for a service that would allow me access to all sorts of convenience services for home owners. Example: if I have plumbing problems in my home, no need to pick up the yellow pages and call a plumber because my bank will send me one of their plumbers instead. It was this massive set of services the bank wanted to give me for a monthly fee. I simply told them "No thanks, I don't need your help running my home" and hung up. Banks are always looking for new ways to make money and it's up to the individual consumer to decide if they want to pay for these services banks are offering. If people are too stupid to see they are being exploited by the banks, they are just too stupid. You can't legislate people from not being stupid. I am of the view that people who own their own airplanes are rich. That does not make them evil. But airplane ownership is something most people in society can not afford. Of course someone who lives in poverty would consider someone else who owns their own home with no mortgage also rich. Rich is a subjective term.
