Cartoon protests turn deadly (surprise surprise?)
CanuckInUSA replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in Speakers Corner
Oh I was thinking of them as well as another certain European nation that sided with Germany at the beginning of a war and then changed teams 1/2 through the war when it started to become clear that Germany would not win. But I didn't want to bring them into the mix. I'm just glad the seperatist Quebecois aren't all that violent and yes they are also very emotional people. But what do you expect. They're French (if you can understand their slang). Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
That game overall didn't do much for me, but it was a great finish and to come so close and not get it was a classic way to finish a championship game. So yes the St. Louis/Tennessee game should always be remembered at times like this as a great Super Bowl. I also thought the Denver/Green Bay game in '98 was a good Super Bowl. But I'm a little bias as I've been a donkey fan for many many years. What we watched on Sunday was a typical low'ish scoring football game from two very good defensive teams. A type of game you'd see on any given Sunday. But this wasn't any old game on any Sunday. It was a championship game. Too many mistakes by the players as well as the zebras when you hoped the players would be at their best was the disappointing aspect of the game. But at least it wasn't a Super-Bore 50 something to 10. The outcome of the game was still in doubt late into the 4th quarter. That's still a pretty good football game to stay interested in. At least it wasn't a Super-Bore. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Cartoon protests turn deadly (surprise surprise?)

Muslims appear to be very emotional people who act before they think. I read that some Egyptians trashed the offices of the company who's ferry sunk last week. It sounds like the boat was old and not up to snuff maintenance wise, so it's understandable that the people would not be happy with the company. But they rioted and trashed the place just like they've been trashing the embassies. I wonder if the seven people who've died in Afghanistan riots in the last two days are happy with their decisions to riot instead of doing something else that day? Dang Matt, as a pilot I thought you would have known not to launch at Wonderland with western winds. There's two reasons why Wonderland Lake is not a great site for Ground Launching. Number one is that there are thousands and thousands of small, medium and large bone breaking rocks on this site and unless you can make it to the soccer field (not a big issue for paragliders but an issue for Ground Launching), you're landing in this rock field (which is where Matt most likely crashed?). And the second reason is that most of the time the winds are coming from the west and one really needs winds out of the east at this site. Here's hoping that Matt will be up an at it soon. Get well bro ... edit for thread name ~TA Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Reline on a Velocity (or any X-Brace)?
CanuckInUSA replied to F16Driver's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
At the end of October it was pretty obvious that I was living on borrowed time with the lineset on my Velo 103 (your old canopy). The canopy had close to 500 jumps on it and some of the lines were beginning to fray. So I replaced them once I knew I wouldn't be jumping much (dang shitty Pacific Northwest winter rain). So now I've got essential a new Velo to go along with my new JVX which thanks to the shitty WX hasn't even been jumped yet. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
M$ forever has and likely ever will (in our lifetimes) dominated the desktop market. But servers are still open with many Linux/Unix flavors out there. I'm a little delinquent with my software development expertise (I never should have become a skydiver), but I have been working in C, C++ and Java for 21 years now and yes I recently got back into the industry with hopefully a new attitude. I see WebServices as the next wave in internet operability and WebServices won't be dominated by Mr Bill. M$ will continue to have it's market share (especially on the desktop) but as long as there is a need for server software, we need not worry about the evil M$ man. Java and what lies beyond will always be available. OpenSource is a beautiful thing. So has Mr Pope's original question been answered? Did someone mention it actually being an HTML/Javascript problem and not a C++/Java problem? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

America has only been following what the Brits originally taught them on how to exploit underdeveloped countries with their colonial endeavors. You and I could debate this (just like everyone else) until hell freezes over, but it doesn't matter. Unless the rest of the world is willing to play hardball against Iran (or any other nation from this point on wishing to develop nuclear weapons), it would be a big big mistake for the US to make plans to invade Iran anytime soon. Iraq should be enough of a lesson to known that it's a bad idea. Iran will get it's nukes. But it's not really Iran I fear. It's this Jihad talk ... Just so that there is no confusion here folks, in hockey the entire puck needs to be across the goal line for it to be ruled a goal. In football, the entire ball does not need to be across the goal line. All that is needed is a small fraction of the ball to break the plane of the goal line for it to be ruled a TD. I'm not going to defend or criticize the linesman for his call except to say that many many times the linesman doesn't signal TDs on close plays like this right away. But you're mistaken to say that the ball was nowhere near the goal line. It was as close as we're likely ever going to see and yes it is possible that the ball didn't actually break the goal line. It was just too darn close to call. A redo with no loss of down would have been nice, except that's not how the game is played. It was either going to be a TD or 4th down. You're showing way to much faith that these people (who we obviously know little about) will act the same way that the rest of world behaves. Have you not paid attention that some of these radicals embrace death as a good thing? What happens when the people controlling these potential WMD decide that it is time for everyone to meet their maker? I used to try and give muslims the "benefit of the doubt". But their violence this last week has made me start to re-think my position towards them (rest assured I don't hate muslims, I just don't understand their lack of respect for life). Who can we trust anymore when many many Islamic clerics are calling for Jihad? They want their holy war and they want it now. It doesn't matter if this cleric is in the middle east, in Europe, in Detriot or Toronto. They're telling their people to wage Jihad. We can no longer afford to rest idol while those around us make plans towards our destruction. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

All the ball needs to do is break the plane of the goal line. If this is by a fraction of a millimeter (not sure if we could ever break it down that small), then so be it it's a TD. Hey I openly admit that it was an extremely close call that could have gone either way. Part of me thinks that only a small fraction of the ball (the part next to Roethlesberger's elbow) broke the plane and the other part thinks, oh shit it's too close and maybe just maybe he didn't score. But the linesman called it a TD (right or wrong I don't know) and the replay didn't should evidence that Ben didn't score, so the result of the play was correct. Without a doubt the muslims have every right to be unhappy with the US and many of the US's allies for the shit which has gone on over the years. But that doesn't give them a free ticket to become violent without expecting some consequences for their actions. The events over this latest incident are really starting to show the "hatred" many muslims have towards the rest of the world (especially the west). It seems that the more the Europeans apologize about these cartoons, the more violent the muslims become. When will it ever end? I'm guessing that it will only end once the radical muslims get their way and get their Jihad they so desperately want to start. What kind of world do you want to live in? A free world where people are free to make their own decision on how they lead their lives, or a world where religion dictates what does and doesn't happen. Do you want to live in a world where you're subjected to violence only because you're different from the majority? I thought/hoped we were going away from that world, but thanks to these recent events, instead of coming together we're becoming more and more distanced. What's going to happen if/when these radicals get their Jihad? Well I can tell you that there will be a backlash towards muslims living in non-muslim parts of the world and innocent people will suffer because of this (losing their homes, their businesses, some getting deported, some being killed). This is not the world I want to see, but it is the world many radical muslims are pushing us towards only because they hate the infidel. I know this is stereo-typing (and I want you to know that I do like you Darius and do think it's good to have someone around here to give us the Muslim view point), but what the fuck is wrong with some of you muslims? Why are you guys so violent and why do you disrespect life so much? We're on a collision course with "armagedon" if we as humans don't get our act together. Once one radical group gets their hands on some nukes watch out. Why should these radicals care if they blow up the world since they believe they are going to paradise anyway? The problem is, is that I don't believe in the Muslim/Judeo/Christian God yet it's these Muslims/Jews and Christians who are going to kill us all because of their fucked up religious beliefs. Newsflash: There may or may not be a creator, but I assure you he/she/it is not the man-made God humans have invented. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

There is only one statistic which counts and that is the final score once the game ends. Yes total rushing yards and time of possession usually dictates ball control (something that often wins games), but total yards and especially total passing yards are poor indicators of winning and losing. Teams trailing in a game will naturally pass more and will spice up those stats even though they can still lose the game. Plus while turnovers can be influential as to who wins and who loses, turnovers mean nothing if they don't result in the score of the game being altered. Pittsburgh played a "bend don't break" defensive scheme yesterday. This may explain why Seattle was able to put up some big yards in the middle of the field, but still lacked the ability to put points on the board. Seattle is a good team. But they broke down enough to hurt themselves when it counted. Did the refs fuck up some calls? Well they sure could have done a better job, but the final score was more influenced by the play on the field (like Seattle's inability to get into the red zone and score points) than it was influenced by bad calls. A football game is not won and lost by one play. It's won or lost over the entire course of the game. Oh and while this doesn't mean much, I actually predicted the final score 21-10 for Pittsburgh (I doubt I would even be able to this again). But it means shit as I didn't win anything or anything like that. It's just that the other day on TV some homers (local TV personalities) predicting that Seattle would win 37-34 on a late game field goal and my reaction to that was "yah right, two strong defensive teams getting into a shoot out, not likely. It'll be more like Pittsburgh 21 Seattle 10" and low and behold that's what happened. Now I doubt I could get the score right again a 2nd time around, but at least I knew that two quality defensive teams were much more likely to play in a low'ish scoring game rather than the shootout these TV personalities were predicting. It was a close play that could have gone the other way that's for sure. Maybe the linesman would have called things different had he been able to see the replay. Of course he doesn't have that luxury and he needs to make a call on the field. But you don't know what was going through the linesman's head as he ran forward. For all we know, he had a visually reference that he just wanted to confirm by getting closer to the players before he made his call. These refs have been around long enough to know that the ball can't be advanced once it is on the ground. I assure you that the linesman spot was in reference to the original play (the part that the replay shows that was too close to call) as opposed to calling it a TD only because Roethleberger moved the ball once on the ground. It doesn't matter what Roethlesberger does with the ball after he's down and rest assured the replay ref wasn't reacting to that part of the play. The controversy exists whether or not the ball (while in Roethlesberger's arms) crossed the goal line and well from what I remembered of the play, it was too close to call (the tip of the ball located next to Ben's elbow might have crossed the goal line by the narrowest of margins ... and it might not have crossed ... you can't get any closer than this). But the original call by the linesman regardless of whether his call was right or wrong, was that the ball did cross the goal line and since the video couldn't conclusively determine that the ball didn't cross, the play was allowed to stand as it was originally called on the field. I'm not going to address your other fouled calls by the refs since I didn't see Porter's horsecaller hit and well "Holding" and "Pass Interference" calls are very subjective. Shit, holding occurs on virtually every play and well who knows what's what when it comes to pass interference since the NFL seems to change their view on this year after year. The bottom line is that the Seahawks had their chances to win this game and they failed to take advantage of them. To blame only the refs and to ignore Seattle's mistakes is wrong. Had Seattle been able to stop Pittsburgh from breaking a few big plays (75 yard TD run + 40 something yard trick play for another TD), had they been able to not throw a late game interception and had they been able to stop Pittsburgh from eating up much of the clock after the interception and had Seattle excercised better clock management once they got the ball back (not to mention at the end of the 1st half), they could have won the game. But they didn't and Pittsburgh went on to win. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

It's too bad that there were a few controversial calls. But remember that the zebras are human and only have a split second to make their on field decisions. Was that Roethlisberger run a TD? Dang that was a tough call. Remember that only a fraction of the ball needs to break the goal line plain in order for it to be ruled a TD. So did the ball cross the plain? Well that is going to depend on whether you're a Steelers fan or a Seahawks fan. But remember that (right or wrong) the linesman's original call was that the ball did cross the plain and in order for this call to be reversed, the replay needed to show without a doubt that the ball did not cross (which as far as I could tell, you can't get any closer without knowing if it did or didn't cross). Calls go against teams every game you play. A true champion is one who can rebound when negative calls go their way. Now if this play occured at the very end of the game, it would be a different story, but it didn't. It happened with plenty of time left on the clock for Seattle to react to. Was this a classic Super Bowl? Hell no, it wasn't even close to some of the better Super Bowl games we've seen (too many mistakes by both teams and yes questionable calls made by the zebras didn't help this game). But at least it wasn't a Super-Bore like we got used to watching the in late 80s and much of the 90s. The outcome of the game was still in doubt late into the 4th quarter and had Seattle been able to score a TD instead of throwing an INT as well as had Seattle been able to stop Pittsburgh from eating up the clock late in the game thanks to their running game, the outcome could have been different. I don't think we need to wait for "eventually" to happen. I think it's already started. It actually started years ago, but is ramping up more and more lately and the hatred spewing out of the muslim world this last week can not be ignored anymore. World War II was a war of nations. This war is a war of religions and ideologies. Is it too late to opt out of this war? I mean I'm not Christian, Muslim or Jewish. Oh wait, the muslims define the "Infidel" as anyone not Muslim right? So I guess I can't opt out. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -

Nature (and history) is full of "Survival of the fittest" scenarios. The strong survive and the weak die off. It's the foundation of evolution. Plus, one only needs to look at nature to determine the true and simple "meaning of life" and that is to propagate the species to ensure it's survival. But that is the survival of the species, not the survival of the individual. I am responsible for my own well being (and that of my direct dependents ... which in my case ... is a pet as I'm not married and I have no kids). I am not responsible for the survival of others. For that they will need to look after themselves and/or hope they have someone who will take care of them. Who said life is easy and fair? One only needs to look at nature to understand how cruel and short life can be. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

shitty remarks regarding US Servicemen

Has it ever occured to you that different languages are used throughout the world all with different spellings and grammar? This is NOT a US based website and there are tons and tons of people who do not claim English as their mother tongue. I think you need to re-evaluate how you view the world. The world doesn't end at the US borders, it only starts to begin. Plus what's this crap about the people of Iraq being cowards? Says who ... you? Never knew you were such an expert on human behavior. If a foreign country invaded your country, what would you do? Would you fight the invaders doing whatever it is was needed to fend them off, or would you rejoice the invading country's culture and religious beliefs. I think we know the answer. You would fight them doing whatever was needed to defeat them. So why are Iraqi's cowards for fighting a foreign invader who ignored virtually every nation and went ahead said "fuck you" to the world did their own thing, invaded Iraq and are now stuck knee deep in the shit. In fact one could claim that the US is full of cowards (oh boy the shit is going to hit the fan for this comment). I mean after all the US is the only country (to date) to use the bomb only because they didn't want to pay the financial and human costs of finishing the war the conventional way. Sounds like cowardly behavior to me. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
