  1. Thanks for the updates on the legalities. I had no idea. Damn terrorists screwed it up for us didn't they? This also reminds me that about a year or two ago there was a guy posting here about smoke cartridges he was designing for skydiving, and we haven't heard from him have we? Or is that the source now.
  2. Thanks for the update Walt. I think these folks may have to settle for the white smoke you can get from Para-Gear.
  3. In a car, if I forget to wear my seatbelt, or choose to not wear one for a short trip, I would not want to be ticketed. I know that I should always wear one, but sometimes I just don't during short trips, or trips where I will be on streets with 25 MPH limits. This may not be logical, but sometimes humans are not. Besides, most cars have airbags now. What could possibly go wrong?
  4. I know someone that needs red M18 smoke cartridges, maybe quantity 2-4. Anyone have any available?
  5. I have jumpmastered many static line students wearing only shorts and T-shirt. Why? Because it was hot. If I think it is going to be at least a little chilly, I wear some kind of jumpsuit. Better to be a little warm on the ramp than be chilly in the air.
  6. Another sad loss. I will miss him, especially at future PIA Symposiums, where he was one of the regulars that gave a lot to the sport and industry.
  7. Divalent posted: "A working GPS will tell you correct information at that instant. Many planes have them. Why not have the pilot announce the value as he begins jump run, and then a quick consult with a simple table will give you the right number?" Kallend posted: "Trouble with the "simple table" is that two 10-ways need more separation than 2 solos." You both make very good points. What I would like to see is more communication between pilots and jumpers. This covers Divalent's point. Those of you who have jumped from Mike Mullins' King Air may have noticed that he asks people the details of the groups getting out so he can adjust the spot. This pretty much covers Kallend's point. I wonder why there isn't more communication. Perhaps we should ask for it.

    Missing Yall

What the hell are you doing over there? I hope it involves making a lot of money. I don't know what you can get away with here now. But if you get banned again then you won't be able to talk to us cool guys....
  9. I think a number of us at some point have been contacted by a school teacher or someone about where to get a "parachute", meaning to them, a large fabric thing that students can perform certain activities with, e.g., teamwork activities, etc. Sometimes a real parachute is what they need, but sometimes they need something for the activity, and it doesn't even need to be a real parachute. I just received my new Oriental Trading Company catalog, and noticed they have a number of them, plus "accessories". http://www.orientaltrading.com Search for "parachute" This company is also a good source for "giveaway" products like little American flags on sticks to give kids at demo jumps, etc. Cheap, cheap, cheap.
  10. Set her up with an audible altimeter and train her to pull. (She might have enough vision to read a visible altimeter though.) Teach her about the landing pattern and then while she flies the pattern, tell her where in the pattern she is.
  11. A very strange sounding scientific paper. Read the abstract. Are they kidding? What the hell is this? http://www.mendeley.com/research/parachute-prevent-death-major-trauma-related-gravitational-challenge-systematic-review-randomised-controlled-trials/
  12. It is good for a lot more! However, it requires a certain minimum of work, which varies depending on how much you want to get out of it. If some people would put as much effort in research on dropzone.com as they did doing totally frivolous stuff on Facebook, they would get something out of it. Agreed, but thorough discussion of things like incidents after-the-fact is a good thing.
  13. Here is an FAA/USPA video, but I don't recall it focusing on the C182. If you have a source to something else, I am interested. http://www.aftw.org/skydiving.html
  14. For those of you interested in modifications to airplanes for skydiving: Nevada Airlift Group (Frank Umbro) has updated their web site and offerings. http://www.jumpplanes.com/ Frank has had a booth at the PIA Symposium for many years now, and his associates have made presentations there as well. He has recently expanded his offerings as far as resources and items for sale related to modifying aircraft for jump operations. Disclaimer: I am providing this information as a service to those needing information about modifying aircraft for skydiving operations, (which I see asked about regularly in dropzone.com forums.) I have no financial or other interest in this company, other than wishing to see information available to the sport/industry.
  15. I have jumped one a few times and found that, (like a lot of large canopies), you need to takes wraps of the steering lines before landings, then the landing is more acceptable. First time I landed one without wraps, I thundered in too. But I don't know how many jumps the canopy had. It looked to be in good condition. Of course there are much better big rigs.
  16. John, you might have setup this scenario a bit too simplified for a simple poll to work well. My answer would be that if the persons/groups allowed enough time between them, that it wouldn't much matter. Actually I think that if presented with this situation, I would hope that the two solo jumpers would take this into account.
  17. Wait a minute... Your "Subject" makes it sound like your post is going to be negative, but all I read is positive! Good job. This only negative I could imagine is if you tripped while walking to the trash can... and some students saw you :) Reminds me of a time I did that.
  18. This is some good data you are adding to the discussion, (along with your post above about successfully landing a side-by-side with canopies that were very dissimilar.) Do you know what configuration the canopies were in right before the cutaway on the guy with the entanglement?
  19. How do we know they want only a one-time experience? Even if they say they do, it may not be true. When I made my first static line jump many years ago, I thought I would make only one jump. Tandem skydiving can be whatever we make it. We can be positive about the possibility of their returning for more training and call them a student, or we can treat them merely like customers and just take their money for a carnival ride. Many dropzones and instructors have chosen the latter, and it is unfortunate.
  20. I agree, but I wonder how much skill it would take to do that. Usually we just reach up and give the toggles a little tug, and suddenly we are in nearly full flight. I suppose we could unstow toggles, and in one motion, go right to half brakes (or however far down they were when stowed) but that would take some skill. I think you and I could do it, but I'm not sure a student or novice skydiver would even _think_ to do it in all of the excitement. Overall, I am of the opinion that we should teach people to leave the toggles alone in a 2-out situation.
  21. You are right, I forgot that part! I was concentrating on the vision differences.
  22. I commented upthread about why requiring a Second Class FAA medical for doing tandem jumps does not provide any additional safety over a Third Class, but I see that people are still talking about it. The only difference in the two is vision related, specifically, seeing the instrument panel of the aircraft in case your glasses fall off or something. This would not apply to tandem jumping as far as I can tell. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/standards/
  23. In post# 90, by Skybeergodd, the statement appears: "Central Conference director Gary Peek has actually contacted the family and offered his assistance in the lawsuit." That statement is false. I have not been contacted by, and I have not contacted any family member or any family lawyers in recent history, or past history, to assist in any legal action, as was incorrectly suggested in post #90. Whether or not Archway continues in operation at Vandalia, IL, was between Archway and the officials of the City of Vandalia, and to my knowledge was a contractual matter. By the way, Skybeergodd's statement including a reference to my "ancient ideas" is comical considering his use of the term "Conference Director". That ancient term has not been accurate for many, many years. CRD G.P.
  24. Could you look at my list above (in post #5, I believe) and let me know what additional one I overlooked? My list included Ted Strong, which would probably be considered a military related death. For purposes of this thread I guess we should not include it.
