  1. There are units even more sophisticated than that, and for not too much more money. http://www.batterytender.com/ The "Technical Info" area of the web site is very good. There is much controversy about the various types of chargers like this, because some people still manage to overcharge their batteries and dry them up, because they expect too much of the units. Keeping a motorcycle or riding lawnmower battery charged during a few winter months is a reasonable application.
  2. Good story. In my opinion that is exactly how radios should be used. Have them available if they are needed, but don't say anything unless really needed. If the training is reasonable, they should at least be able to land in the vicinity of the normal landing area.

I think different exits create the most fun. If their progression has not yet included exiting with the wind at their back, as in a "sit-fly" exit, they are almost sure to enjoy that. Also, sitting in the door of an airplane like a Caravan or Otter and falling backwards "scuba style" is fun. Of course a 2 person "tube" dive is fun. (Be careful.) For a small Cessna, going "down the side" is an idea. You can act like an AFF student and tell them that they are going to be in the instructor position and hold onto you on exit. It is an interesting role reversal if they trained via AFF. A favorite freefall formation of mine is doing a 2-way compressed accordian, and having one of you backloop while the other is doing a frontloop. Teaches timing and teamwork for sure. Then do some 360s while still docked. And of course there is a tracking dive, but don't track so much as do a forward motion and stay really close together. This will be a challenge for both of you.
  4. Yes! I think we should all celebrate. Just tell us what to drink. Seriously, congratulations.
  5. Drives me crazy too. I think much of that canopy's reputation early on came from it being one of the first and most popular elliptical parachutes. Many years down the road when other canopies came out, people had mostly realized and corrected the things they were doing wrong when they had a Stiletto and their newer canopies had fewer issues. It seems you have met a few people that haven't.
  6. Whoah! WTF indeed. I had never considered the possibility of that happening. Well, now we _all_ will. I suppose the owner of the Skyvan has taken a quick look at the latch mechanism? Otherwise, maybe the first group did not get it latched fully? I could also imagine how a big "bounce" when the one group exited could cause something to happen. Be careful everyone. Nothing is perfect.
  7. Bill, I think you misunderstood what John meant, which is that you do not need a static line instructor rating to instruct or "jumpmaster" a licensed skydiver doing a static line jump. This parallels his (and many other people's) belief that you should not need a wingsuit instructor rating to instruct licensed skydivers in wingsuiting.
  8. Kevin, what is a "high level FSDO operator"?
  9. And even if the finger is not lost, the injury can be very serious. See the attached pictures. After seeing these, I decided that I would never again let any student wear a ring if I could prevent it. And if the pictures are not enough to convince an instructor, think about what a lawyer will do if there was an accident.
  10. Wait a minute. Which "Chicago dropzone" has caused your eyebrows to rise because of the number of fatalities?
  11. http://www.pcprg.com/stiltabs.gif (Hint: I'm messin' with you Dave.)
  12. Because it is no longer "cool". Here is some info: http://www.pcprg.com/packing.htm I know, the pictures are poor. I have been meaning to take better ones for a long time now.
  13. I just went to their web site and looked at the manual. To me it seems like (from looking at the pictures) they are telling you to do just that. Have you received any comment from the manufacturer? To me it seems like stowing a reserve toggle in a way that is difficult for it to catch on something and get pulled out, causing a spinning reserve, is more important than having it easy to pull out deliberately, but that's just my thoughts.
  14. I think I should get credit for naming that color: "desert white". I have been calling it that for years.
  15. Source? The Press Releases page of their web site doesn't have anything to this effect.
  16. Some students benefit from getting rid of the instructor (the close supervision part) after they can be trusted to take care of themselves, at least for a few jumps. They can work on some things by themselves and it gives them confidence. Then they can get back with an instructor to start getting things signed off toward a license. Some people though, may want to keep going with an instructor to get to the license earlier. It is nice to give them a choice if they are safe to make that choice.
  17. 1. Highly loaded Stiletto, outside "A" line. Did not even know it until I coiled the lines after landing. 2. A long time ago with a large canopy, spotted it after opening, no difference in performance.
  18. I don't recall the year, but when Roger Nelson brought a C130 to the World Skydiving Convention in Quincy, IL, people were doing at least 20 ways, 5 wide by 4 around. They might have been doing 25 ways. There was a picture in either Parachutist or Skydiving magazine, but I have no idea what year to look.
  19. Lee, that would make a very good signature line!
  20. Condolences to the family. He contributed a lot to the sport and to USPA.
  21. Good job old man! I guess that's why you have over 13,000 jumps. I'm jealous.
  22. Great job Martin. (It sucks riding the plane down doesn't it?)
  23. I once went to an auto-top place that makes replacement tops for convertibles, and they gave me a nice scrap piece.
  24. Just in case any of you know them, I saw Michael and Charmian Larson at Summerfest this weekend, on their way back from Oshkosh. They are from way back in the Casa Grande era, but they stopped jumping a long ago, and are now flying their Cessna 195 all around the country. www.cessna195family.com
  25. OK, which one of you made this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6HSlZBNwUQ&feature=related All I did was follow a Jefferson Airplane link in YouTube, and look what happened! Blame it on Clapton, I think the first link I followed was Cream.
