I spoke with an agent from Seattle, gave him the FBI# I found on the back of Mel's mugshot. We spoke of the Unsolved Mystery video. He asked me the "the reasons" why I thought my father could be Dan Cooper. (it sounded like he has asked that question before, it was so automatic). I emailed him some pictures, the Unsolved Mysteries link and a video of old 8mm film we had taken in 1969 - 71. I have not spoke to him since...it is in their hands now. I finished my last final last night!! (YAY) My daughter and I have planned a trip to San Francisco to see my sister over Memorial Weekend. Life goes on........ Vicki, Do you know the location where your father entered military service? Do you have the approximate date of his entrance? Did he volunteer or was he drafted? As I am sure Jerry will agree, once you have entered the military's record system you are there forever. Have you considered contacting an organization such as the American Legion for assistance in this? In this computer age, a veterans assistance organization can access information that you can't as an individual. Perhaps Jerry could put you in touch with such a group. And don't believe any stories about all the millitary records burning up in a fire in St. Louis, MO a few decades back. They didn't! But you need to get in touch with an ex-military group of people who know how the system works. Robert Nicholson Nothing...That is what I have. Just his full name and birthdate. My mother told me he ran away from home and entered the Navy, but there is one thing we all know.......He lied about his past to my mother. No. Nobody has his SS#. I did FOIA requests with FBI, US Marshal and Military Archives. I received the canned response of - Information cannot be released without a Death Certificate. My brother may have a letter our Father wrote to him from 1971. He recalls it may be in an envelope, but does not know if it was sealed. He thinks it is in storage in his lower level, but is just not sure exactly where. I do not recall having anything he may have left and my Mom tossed his personal belongings ofter he left. Here is the post Georger refers to: I am not sure what my Father's assignment was while he was in the Navy. But he was enlisted approximately 1943ish. I still am waiting for the Naval Training Certificate to be sent/scanned and emailed to me by my niece, but I am still waiting.......... The Navy responded back to my archive request and they cannot find a record of Melvin being in the Navy, that is with the limited information I have. EDIT: I also find this interesting: My Dad was missing two months prior to the hi-jacking. Again....it is hard to miss something that is already gone! I did! If I had planned on using an American Express I would have been disappointed. On a D.B. Cooper note, I was speaking with a lady at work today who was in the Navy in the early 50's. She remembers some of the veterans wearing parachutes and having minimal jump training when they were assigned to cargo loading. Just a thought.
