No fun jumping in Las Vegas???
Hvance replied to stclaire2003's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's going to be that way in any urban center. For a handful of pretty obvious reasons, DZs aren't going to be permitted to operate close to major hubs. Same deal in Atlanta. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option. -
Depends on the dynamic with the parents. Some refer to asking for a loan as "bailing out." I disagree. If you agree to borrow money (assuming there's some interest) that's no different to me than going to a bank. Okay, a little different, but not the same as a handout. I saw that one before. Didn't realize what they were trying to do until now. Ow. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

I like that. Happened to be a good angle for the cutaway. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

Welcome welcome! Plenty of opinions on the helmet discussion, so I'll let more experienced hands address it. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

That's hilarious. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

Aquarium is worth seeing. Sundial's a fun place to eat. Don't go to the underground. CNN tour is interesting. If you have the time, Stone Mountain is worth going to. And yeah, it's hot... I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

GSMs been a weak standard for years. The capability to monitor calls has been there, it's just cheap now.. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

Thanks Andy.

I've been asking the same questions recently. Few nuggets of wisdom I've heard: -You can tell who the experienced jumpers are easily on a windy day. They're the ones sitting on lawn chairs watching the newer jumpers get experience. -They are old jumpers and there are bold jumpers. But there are no old, bold jumpers. -Blind risk is not the same as informed choice. -Better on the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground. The gist that I gleaned is that by being careful, you can reduce the risk of injury. As another poster put very well, we can't eliminate the risk in anything. No one would deny that skydiving is inherently a dangerous sport. But I think it is fair to say that a safety-conscious skydiver has a good chance of avoiding major injury or death. ---------- Saw after I posted that you also asked for new jumpers' perspectives. Here's mine. At first I was not that worried. I had a healthy fear when standing at the door, but I was feeling okay overall. Now, ten or so jumps later, I'm not more afraid per se, but I do have more respect for the risks. The reason is that I have asked for advice, reviewed previous incidents, read about safety, etc, and I understand more than I did before that the human element is critical. The advantage of this is that I am more careful and even more willing to take advice. Overall, I think it's a great sport (and obviously extremely fun), as long as you acknowledge the inherent risks and actively work to minimize them.

I have two Cavalier spaniels with the same condition. Neither of them have had surgery yet. For one, it's due to a heart condition which may lead to complications, but for the other the vet said it's not worth surgery until my dog really *needs* it. Both seem happy thus far, so I'm holding my breath. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

I live in Boulder, Colorado. Thank you to the rest of you folks for the advice. I'm especially keen on natural alternatives (infact, im surprised that I haven't heard of arnica already), so I'll definately give the arnica a try. My next question -- which is probably a dumb one -- is should I tip? If so, how much? If you're visiting a therapist, it's not really customary. It's like visiting a doctor; you're billed. A run of the mill masseuse might be different, but I wouldn't know. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

As has been said, this is a common nonoccurence, especially on larger sites. If it's a glitch or an obvious typo (e.g. 300 instead of 3000), companies never honor the incorrect price. Even great companies won't honor it if it was a good faith error. I completely understand why you jumped on the deal, but usually if a deal looks too good to be true..you know the rest. If I saw a new TV in a store with a sticker for $30, I know it's a mistake. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

That's horrible. Whoever held the gun will be scarred by that for life.. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

I go to a therapist who works on deep tissue and the chiropractic stuff. While the adjustment definitely helps, it's the massage-type therapy that usually helps the most. That said, you can't walk into any random massage place and expect the same results. Look for sport therapy type places. Never tried accupuncture, so I can't comment on that. Interesting point re: loss aversion jaffo. With respect to jumping in too quickly (no pun intended) I can see your and others' points. I'm working toward my first license at the moment, and every now and then I pause and think "whoa, do I really want to do this for X years?" That's not really because of money (I paid, and I'm fine with that) but more due to how rapidly things have unfolded. On jump led to another which led...so forth. Now every time I leave the DZ, I'm more convinced that I love this sport, but the point is still that buying the package puts some positive pressure on the student, even if it's not strictly monetary. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

I will say in my case it made a lot of sense to buy an A license package. For one thing, I was able to do 3-4 AFF jumps on a per-jump basis before I had to commit to it. And I ended up saving about 30%. As to being able to jump, it's been fine overall. Even on days with 70 tandems, I've been able to jump. They do prioritize AFF. Just my $.02 from my experience. The consequences of jumping in turbulence (pics)
Hvance replied to mik's topic in Safety and Training
Can someone clarify how turbulence is caused at 3000 feet? I think I understand the basics (trees, buildings, etc blocking wind) but what is the cause that high up? I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option. -
Should I quibble over a $1.2K +/- difference
Hvance replied to ManagingPrime's topic in Safety and Training
I don't know what market price is for an A license package, but I paid $1800 for mine. No tandems in that package. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.
