Is it "funny" to push somebody out of the door?
bodypilot1 replied to The111's topic in Safety and Training
I'm not sure what is ment by "climbing halfway out". Eric It seems you are having a hard time understanding the correct spotting procedures. Maybe you should ask your S&TA, call Matt and ask him personally? Spotting should be done from inside the plane and when it clear for you to jump, then climb out all the way out and go. Different exits may require some other technique, so dont be afraid to ask your local hot shot skydiver at your DZ. -

bodypilot1 replied to The111's topic in Safety and Training
If you climb out, then hang on and wait for the spot to get better, your endangering the entire plane load of jumpers. A premature opening is bad when your on the plane. If this is happening, talk to the person that has done it when you get on the ground and explain why it shouldn't be done. Was this what happened with Matt and his Squeeze? It's not just a money issue, but instead a safety issue also. Other aircraft flying in the local air space are not always picked up by the pilot and first out should always look for planes in the area and down the line of flight that could interfere with jumpers exiting on the load. Not cool. Having to push people out the door to get a good spot and then having no spine to admit it is even worst..... They'd be spitting out their teeth like Chicklets if it were me. Be safe Ed www.WestCoastWingsuits.com www.PrecisionSkydiving.com -
Having done many AFF exits from a King Air/Queen Air, with all three outside, the reserve has to be on their game during exit or they will funnel the exit everytime. Also, some of the reserve side instructors I have had sometimes have never even made it back to their slot on the reserve side of my student for the entire skydive! The exit using the reserve side rear float, student squatting facing the line of flight, and the mainside gripping the student from inside the plane seems to be a good exit, but also causes the student to get rotated to the line of flight as the main side exits. Not that it's a bad thing, but when they are getting to do solo exits it's easier for them to be stable while watching the plane fly away and having their chest into the relative wind, and they can get used to this if they can also see it when they exit with 2 instructors hanging on IMO. These days, I do not ever use a reserve side with the my students in the program I teach. I guess I've found that using a reserve side is more trouble then they are worth, and I prefer to handle the student on my own, also giving them a choice of what exit they'd like to do. I show them both inside and outside exits and let them choose the one that makes them feel more comfortable. Be safe Ed www.WestCoastWingsuits.com www.PrecisionSkydiving.com

What out-of-the-ordinary things do you do for safety?

Doubling it may help some students that dont pick it up the way you are teaching them, but skydiving isn't rocket science. And if this were the case, the FJC could be ran over a couple of days. The student does not need to jump the same day as he is taught the FJC. My private course is alittle different. I only take on one student at a time so my focus is directly on them. Also doing 2 tandems before we go into the student gear training gives them the opportunity understand how a their body movements in the air effects their stability, and it also gives them some knowledge of canopy control and landing patterns. Moving along through the training, at the students learning capability, is the best for the students skydiving progression, but unfortunatly some DZ's would rather push quantity rather then quality..... How many first jump courses have you taught? Sadly if that is such the case, there probably is too many students in the FJC or the Instructor needs better skills in teaching. No student should board an airplane uniformed, or not given every opportunity to practice what they were instructed on during the FJC. Students should skydive when they say they are ready to skydive and no sooner. Be safe Ed www.WestCoastWingsuits.com www.PrecisionSkydiving.com

It will take about a week after your last jump, but make sure you bring it along when you come and train with me or we'll have to get you another one..... Be safe Ed www.WestCoastWingsuits.com www.PrecisionSkydiving.com

During everyday activity the body is not subjected to bending backward like we do during a skydive for stability. Stretching your muscules stretched out and getting them in shape for a comfortable arch is something you needed to do before hand, but you probably weren't told to do so and had no idea. Below is a picture of someone stretching and getting his back used to being in that arching position. There are alot of other muscules that need to be stretched also for skydiving, but sometimes all the muscules cant be targeted while on the ground and just getting in the air often will develope them. Make sure your stretching does not pull a muscule that has tensed up on you. Since your muscules have tightened up from never being used, start streching VERY slowly making sure not to over stretch and injure it, and take Advil to help relieve some pain. Hope this helps.
