What is this canopy? #32767
howardwhite replied to howardwhite's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Yup. That's him. I think I met him years ago at Z-Hills, and I checked out his web site after your post. (For extra credit, do you remember what he called it?) It would be interesting to hear from him about the design points of his canopy (I have several other pictures of it.) (For others -- it's not German and it's not Barish). HW -
What is this canopy? #32767

There are probably a few people here who will know, but not many. I don't know much about it and would like to know more from those who know its creator. HW -

Yeah, I suppose you could if you were on a Pee Cee and had Microsquish Outlook Mail. I'm not and I don't. HW -

Ah, the Mayfair. I can't believe jumpers were actually banned there for a while. Here are the color versions of the Swiss Beech pix. HW -
Excellent. Add D-45 to the list. Have you registered yet? I see that John Coppe is on the list of attendees. He flew a lot of loads I was on at Indiantown, and I saw him last year at Lowell Bachman's memorial party. HW

Well, until we arrange the Great Photo Shoot, this quick 'n dirty collage will have to do. HW -

You didn't, but I bet it's this one. I have a color version of it somewhere. It was in Switzerland, if memory serves. HW -
And another: Bill Jolly, D-26. Which means that the reunion will have: D-1 D-22 D-26 D-69 D-70 D-83 And possibly D-16 and D-50. HW (D-29650 )

I looked at the IMDb listings for all the people. Art Scholl was a famous stunt pilot but not, AFAIK, involved in any skydiving stuff except maybe incidentally. None of the rest seem to have had any involvement with skydiving. I remain puzzled. HW

I confess to confusion about the credits on IMDb. The pictures are from the March, 1981, Parachutist, which says the three photographers were Kevin Donnelly, Carl Boenish, and Ray Cottingham. The jumper in the exit shot is identified as Jerry Meyers, wearing (according to Donnelly) a "Security Maxi-pig" with a chest-mount container, supposedly the money pouch. Other jumpers participating in the shoot were identified as Dean Westgaard and Bill Edwards. It's a mystery to me why none of these people are identified on IMDb, nor do the IMDb pages for Boenish, Cottingham and Donnelly reflect any participation in this movie. It's not clear where this was shot. The Parachutist story describes how Kevin nearly fell out accidentally while spotting when "...the plane was over Yosemite Park, some 20 miles from their target area." Could it be there was another set of shots, and this one was not used? Is this another DB mystery? I expect to see Kevin at the reunion in Raeford in May and will ask him. HW

Don't expect a response here from Zing; he's banned. He (Zing) is in AZ and responds to emails and phone calls. HW -
Well, of course it's the DB Cooper movie. But who are the jumpers? And where was it shot? (I don't know the precise answer to this -- only the general area.) HW (It's not Norm Kent)

That's not what I have written down Here's the exit shot. HW

Dunno what you're talking about. Looks fine to me. HW

But who, when, where, why? (If you have ever posted to the DB Cooper thread, you are ineligible to win the grand prize.) HW

Two outa three ain't bad. The third (according to the local paper) was Edward Schmitt. HW

And another add to the list: Nate Pond (D-69). I saw him today; he's planning to fly his 180 down to Raeford. HW
-
New addition to the list of those planning to be in Raeford in May: Al King. He might even bring Sport Beth if she can get time off from work. Al is already committed to being in a small-way (

There's also a really great story on page 51. HW

I saw that in the summary, but I also scanned the document for support of this statement, and didn't really find any. He notes "The quality of the Swedish data derives from the fact that the Swedish Civil Aviation Authority has delegated regulation of skydiving sporting activities in the country to the SFF. As the sole superintendent of Swedish skydiving, the SFF maintains a central registry of participants and activity, and collects data on incidents including injuries through a compulsory reporting system. Given the practical difficulties in practicing civilian sport parachuting from aircraft over Sweden without the knowledge and approval of the SFF, its skydiving database may be among the best available for research on any sport or recreational activity." In other words, the Swedish counterpart of USPA regulates skydiving, and he seems more than content with that. I like this quote: Anyway, the dissertation is worth reading in full HW

Thanks to David Layne, I have several original local newspapers from the time with all of these names. One correction: Al Homestead, not Olmstead. He's mentioned in the attached 40-years-later newspaper story from the Cleveland Plain Dealer. HW

That's the title of a PhD dissertation by Anton Westman. You can read about it here. And you can download the full text from this link. HW
