What you refer to is basically the same scenario as when a jumper cuts away a main canopy, but only the side with the RSL releases for whatever reason. Main still attached, reserve p/c coming out, and what might have been a slow speed mal is quickly becoming a high speed spiraling nightmare. You are way off on your example when you say it wouldn't be a problem if you cut away fast enough. Watch how fast the RSL system and subsequent reserve deployment happens. If you get line stretch on a main and have a broken cutaway cable locking loop release the riser, the reserve p/c will be out and deploying above your head before you even realize what's happening. There's no established procedure that I know of for that situation, because there's so many possible configurations you might be in after such a riser release. Here's what you know for sure: Your main is suspended from only one side, causing a wicked spin with a high rate of descent. Your reserve canopy is at some stage of deployment and in some degree of conflict with your crippled main. Releasing the remaining main riser will end any possibility of having control over it. If what you have will kill you, doing anything is better than doing nothing. Doing anything may kill you. PLF's will get credit for another war story - if you live through it. You should have checked your gear. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

You are really asking two very different questions. On Mr. Low Pull, given your statement above, I'd say this guy needs some pretty serious intervention before being allowed back in the jump plane. In fact, it surprises me that the DZO hasn't fixed this guy already. Anyone with such a severe loss of time and altitude will almost certainly get hurt sooner or later, probably sooner - like this weekend. Additionally, if he can't keep track of time during the skydive, you have to wonder what else is getting past him, like almost everything almost all the time. I'm not sure if giving the guy audiables is helping or hurting. He may be waiting to hear something and never does. Not hearing an audible can also be a sign of someone who is overwhelmed on a skydive. Making things more complicated is very seldom affective in skydiving, and it sounds like adding audibles may just be requiring more thought than this guy can muster. On the audibles on students in general: I would NEVER use an audible on a student as an altitude monitoring devise. As you well know from your low pull dude, temperal distortion (losing track of time) is one of the most dangerous things that can plague a jumper. Students must learn to use their internal clock along with reference visuals and altimeters to develop a keen sense of altitude awareness. Allowing them to use an audible to monitor various altitudes will only create a dependency on them, and adds a degree of complexity to the jump that many students may not be ready for. With that said, we did use audibles at the DZ I owned (Skydive USA, aka party central) as a "possible emergency alert". They were set for an altitude well below the students primary AND secondary canopy deployment altitudes (1500 feet if I remember right). Students were taught that if they heard the audible, they were to immediately check for a good canopy (in case it went off by accident while the student is already under a good canopy), then take the appropriate action. We also found them to be a pain in the ass to keep up with and eventually ditched them. Ahhh, simplicity. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Deny the charges on your credit card, under the premise of the product not being as advertised (a debit card is protected in the same way). That puts the ball back in the sellers court. The card company should send him documents explaining why the charges were denied, and give him the opportunity to explain why he should still get paid. The card holder usually wins cases like this, but be prepared to send the gear back as well. By the way, have you just asked the guy to take the stuff back???? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
You mean the war that won support from the majority of democrats and was approved by Congress? That one? The one where we took out a viscious bag of shit that ran rape rooms and killed hundreds of thousands of his own citizens with a WMD? Is that the one you mean? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

As do I . . . If the government let the auto industry fail, then you'd be bitching about all the people on welfare and collecting unemployment. People working is better than people not working. It's really quite simple. As opposed to what? Them causing it? If the gov had kept thier nose of out shit since Carter, we would not be here today. So where pay tell do you stop? You bitched about the executive branch grabbing power when Bush was in there. But I guess it is ok for your man. Ironic, dont you think? +1 Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Funny how he said he doesn't want to run the car companies...right after he fired GM CEO Rick Waggoner. Then he sends 'em back to the drawing board, saying the plan presented to him doesn't go "far enough fast enough". Nah, he doesn't wanna run the car companies. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

I don't give a shit how we compare to other countries. That's not the point. This is OUR country, OUR government, and OUR tax system. The only comparison should be what OUR taxes are compared to what OUR taxes should be. And the answer is lower. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

The SIM section you posted is a general outline for dive flows. What I was referring to was appropriate procedures in the real world. Unless something has changed since I began teaching AFF nearly 20 years ago, students are trained to deploy at or by a specific altitude on each jump, and the procedure they are to take when they find themselves below that altitude is to pull immediately. The poster's jump was a perfect example of how fast students can and do blow through altitude when they let themselves get caught up in the unimportant. He stated that he originally reached for his deployment devise at 5200' (thinking he was supposed to deploy at 5K), and by the time he double-clutched, waved off, and threw out, he was smoking through 4 grand. That's a full 6 seconds and 1,200 feet just to wave off and dump. Besides being safest for young jumpers because of their habit of getting temperal distortion (loss of time awareness), having a "hard deck" (where the student stops EVERYTHING - wave offs included - and deploys) also serves to give students an absolute from which to make good decisions in the least amount of time and with the least amount of altitude loss. Pull time is pull time. Once you realized you were supposed to be pulling, you should have forgone everything else and simply deployed. Getting caught up in other stuff at deployment time will suck you down, just as it did there. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

They aren't blackmailing anyone. They are making a financial decision. They know their labor costs will dramatically increase if the law go the way the dems want, so they are putting off buying the planes until they see what's going to happen. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Yep, I knew it - it took less than 5 minutes for someone to respond, running to Obama's rescue. If you want to talk about Gov. Palin, start a thread and let's discuss it. That has nothing to do with this and should stand on its' own if you take issue with it. And of course he apologized. That's called damage control and may or may not have any sincerity connected to it. Once again, the libs don't debate on merit. They just try to divert the conversation. Mr. Obama showed last night just what an absolute mindless, rude asshole he is. Okay, so now you've called the president an asshole twice, which should make you very happy. then you've gone after anyone who disagrees with your assessment, branding them a liberal, etc, etc. You don't want a forum, you want to pick a fight. so who'e the asshole now ? I know, I know....my first, last and final warning, don't even bother. I'm gone. What do you call a president that lowers himself to 7th grade "pick on the dumb guy" humor? It has nothing to do with making me happy. I have better ways to do that. This is about the President of the United States making comments expected from Jr. high school boys getting their first taste of testosterone. And where ya been on the whole liberal vs conservative debate? I'm not going after "anyone" who disagree with me. I'm going after "THE ONES" who disagree with me. Get over yourself. Like others your new and previously uncharacteristic turn to a serious and earnest nature does not yet resonate with me. Perhaps this is a change on your part - if yes, fabulous! I'm happy to be proven wrong if that is the case. You have choices [i.e., personal responsibility] on how you respond. Your choices will can either prove [tbrown], me, and others wrong or demonstrate the alternative. /Marg That's really disappointing. I live to resonate with you. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

My opinion on the issue has nothing to do with politics. I would feel the same regardless of who said it. And it wasn't a joke. Watch the video. Mr. Obama's comment was clearly spontaneous as the conversation developed. Spontaneity reveals true thoughts. I believe that's the case here. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

I've accepted that it's some part of my 'antiquated' ideas regarding public behavior of leaders, public officials, and representatives of the government that I don't consider any Late Night comedy/variety show or The Daily Show, as much as I might like the latter, to be appropriate fora for the head of state or even Presidential candidates. Recognize that my conceptions don't necessarily match the rest of the countries ... c'est la vie. /Marg Thanks for letting everyone know what you accept. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Why would we make any? It was an insensitive comment. But I'm glad to hear that your tolerance level for such comments is very low. I'll be sure to remember that for future reference. Unless of course you're simply not allowing a crisis to go to waste for political gamesmanship's sake. No gamesmanship here. I am truly offended that my president would make such a remark publicly and I believe it says a lot about his ability - or lack thereof - to behave appropriately for the situation. If you knew me you would know that my "tolerance for such comments" is actually very high. It's my tolerance for seeing my president do it in front of the world that I have no tolerance for. Some of us still feel a sense of deep respect for the office, even if we don't agree with the person filling it. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Exactly, class is bombing and invading another country to prove something to Daddy..killing thousands without a valid reason....now that is fucking class. it was a fucking joke... Conversation diversion attempt. A bad one, but one nonetheless. Can you libs ever just discuss the topic at hand? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
