I use the glue pad in a top-mount configuration. All of my other cameras have been side mount, so the first time I stood up in the plane I knocked the thing out of the industrial velcro. Good thing I had it tethered, as I was able to snap it back on before getting to the door.
The nice thing about the Contour is that the camera itself slides off the mount, so I superglued the top and bottom velcro pieces together to make the helmet mount permanent, then I just slide the camera on and off. It's been rock solid ever since, though I still use the tether just in case.
I never have used a GoPro personally, but I'm currently using the 720p@60fps setting and am VERY pleased with the video quality.
