No negotiation needed. I have sat out loads before and waited till I am ready. It was a whole bunch of factors that came together. I wanted to do a hop and pop, and here they are not as easy as they were in the US. I needed to leave the DZ asap as I had commitments and honestly a couple of pretty woman asking me played a part as well. Someone actually offered to take my slot Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I really like both for different reasons. I like the analogue for free fall with the red zone. My life was saved by the 'red' on an analogue alti many years ago. Basically I had been jumping a metric altimeter and switched to one in feet. I waited for 1000 to deploy and I can honestly say it was the fact that the needle was in the red that prompted my to deploy ASAP. I have Galaxy that I use as my primary alti. I also have a Viso 2 that is normally in my helmet, unless I'm planning on doing canopy stuff. My intention is to mount the Galaxy on the chest pillow that I have, and keep the Viso on my wrist. I just haven't got around to it. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

First of all I've just finished reading Deep Survival where he mentions that under stress and in extreme situations our IQ plummets to that of an ape. I've always thought of myself as safety conscious and conservative. Today I proved to myself that it's possible to let your emotions take control and do stupid things that could easily result in an incident. Fortunately for me the only result was a really fun jump with no consequences... Basically I got to the dz early this morning in overcast conditions, with cloud base at somewhere between 3 and 5k. A couple of very sweet girls asked if I wanted to do a hop and pop with them. I let the situation get the better of me. I don't like being rushed, but we 'squeezed' a load in with 4 of us. I still don't understand how it went from an informal chat to someone yelling at me to get geared up as the plane was waiting for me. But I ended up grabbing my gear (packed by someone else), stuffing my pilot chute into the BOC as fast as I could, and running to the plane, while kitting up. I normally do a full main and reserve pin check - this got skipped in the rush. I also check the winds and landing pattern this got skipped. I normally drive people I am jumping with mad, by wanting to know the plan before boarding - this got skipped. In fact the 'plan' was for a 4 way if we got to 5k, not to jump if we couldn't get 3.5k and hop and pops if in between. I found the 'plan' out at 1k. We ended up doing hop and pops with me out last. What angers me is that I allowed myself to get into a situation where so many of my hard rules got broken. In looking at it in hindsight I am really disappointed. A couple of good looking girls and a desire to jump asap is a really poor excuse for ending up dead. I think it is Wendy who has said a really dangerous mindset is doing the wrong thing and getting away with it. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Skydiving bullies. Put up your hand.

I agree with your take. I think people here are missing the point of what John said. I have no problem with people being told hard truths and I think that the approach Chuck took with the velo guy was correct. I don't think I've ever seen Dave 'bully' but he's sure posted some stinging criticisms. Honestly more people should model their online posting behaviour. Far to many up-jumpers on here post without actually reading and so they simply post their standard mantra. What? English your second language or something? Don't know the difference in usage for to, too and two? Shhhesh. Oh wait....you've been subjugated by that Aussie Arsehole crowd. Never mind. Uno, dos, one, two, tres, quatro Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw. Had two big horns and a wooly jaw. Wooly bully, wooly bully. My english sucks - I grew up in the African bush. But you've got to agree that Dave's posts are about the most consistent and devoid of bashing. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -

This guy insisted he was ok to jump a Velo

I tend to agree with John. I am all for discipline and when a quiet word has failed, have no problem with someone being called out over the loudspeaker. Some people thrive on being bad boys though (recent revelation to me). Squeak can comment as to whether I am over reacting, but a good friend of mine jumped for the first time in a year last weekend. He pulled off a dangerous landing stunt to show off (essentially a 720 turn in the main landing area). The chief instructor gave him advice on how to induce speed safer, he totally blew it off. He's got 1200 jumps so not a newbie. What I learnt from it all was observing how he totally did not 'hear' what Don said to him. What do you expect from a company whose logo is in honour of a suicide (Turing)

Not answering your question But how secure is the data? Is it only stored on the phone? I've been through the pain of losing a log book and it would be nice to have a backup. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Impact with Planet Earth will come as a complete and total surpise to me as i will be busy trying to save my arrogant arse. When i impact Ill be like WTF, I haven't exhausted my options yet. Granted that thought will be VERY short. And as a freeflyer the last thing through your mind will be your arse Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Well if it did happen it smells of poor preventative maintenance. Assuming the fans are made of metal and not some composite, metal fatigue and ageing are pretty well understood and methods of testing are well established. I think pd has an article on this. On early generation zp canopies it was advised, but not newer canopies. I jump a Sabre 1 and roll the nose, if I don't it hurts. When jumping Sabre 2's I don't roll the nose. It may be the canopy but I don't get on heading openings on the Sabre 1. 1991 Tandem 'incident' in the UK

There is a lot better way: sell your gear if you don;t jump it and jump the money you get it for that. I jump one day a month. As others have commented I don't see any harm and I have a gear bag, so snags aren't a problem.

One reason might be is that zero all-electronic AAD's existed until the CYPRES was introduced at the start of 1991.

On Australian TV the other day, there was an incident from 1990/1991 where a TI got the drogue bridle around his neck which caused him to go unconscious. The video dude dumped the tandems reserve and 'saved their lives'. Back in the late 80's and early 90's were AAD's not compulsory on tandems? Initially I had thought it was just TV hype, but they interviewed both the TI and video guy, neither mentioned an AAD. It was some pretty amazing footage.

Yesterday someone suggested to me that when my gear is not being jumped for a period of time, I should NOT stow the pilot chute in the BOC, to preserve the life of the spandax. Has anyone else ever heard of that advice? It seems logical enough and I don't see any downside to doing this.

Just to be clear, it was NOT me who spiralled at 500 Come back more often Nige, we're not near as scary as you think I'll be back and yes you definitely didn't spiral from 500 foot but i can't help feeling you did something egg him on considering you landed next to him
-
Got to meet squeak, his barks worse than his bite. Must say that I was with the cowboys though.... Not good for reputation being associated with the dude who spiralled from 500 foot to 60 foot for landing Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

What do you mean? I haven't got any experience of the US system. I'm going to go in and speak to a couple of the Uni's to see what fits my requirements best. I quite like the look of the ECU Masters by coursework program. Curtin has a good diploma though. from a prestige POV ECU would be lower on the ladder for Engineering. UWA or Curtin would be significantly higher for enigineering Yeah ECU doesn't have as good a feel, but appears to have the best Masters for what I'm looking at. UWA are very research based, which doesn't fit my objectives. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I'm interested in getting the opinion of people who have done or work in industry recruiting and working with electronics engineers. I work as a professional engineer and have my PE registration (well the UK equivalent C.Eng). At present I have time on my hands and I'm keen to fill in some of my theoretical gaps. Building my resume is part of the equation. Although I have 3 patents in my name and have served on committees drafting technical EU standards and laws, so it is unlikely to make a significant difference. Basically my maths sucks and I'd like it to be stronger. The graduate diploma would allow me to focus 70% of my time doing maths at an advanced level. The remaining 30% would be doing physics. The Msc is much more focused on project work, and at face value doesn't appear to offer as much of a learning opportunity. But not having done an Msc this may be a misinformed.

Raise your hand if you think upsizing is a good idea.

Very true. I went from jumping Sabre 2 rental gear, to a Sabre 1 of my own. It is really surprising how much difference in flight characteristics there are. The 1 turns very slowly in comparison. But I'll stick with 170's loaded at just over 1:1.
