  1. Have you looked at http://www.subterminal.ch? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. Ditto. I actually found the official "USPA" water training not terribly valuable. But my informal water training (landing in relatively safe, deep water, with a boat nearby) on 50 or so BASE jumps has served me well on my 4 or so nasty water landings (3 in the ocean, 2 with a wingsuit on). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. Actually, yours made me laugh. I really appreciate the people who throw out funny stuff to break up the thread of conversation when it starts to turn ugly. It's kind of "peer pressure moderation", which always works better than "hot fork moderation." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  4. Let me share with you what this thread looks like from a moderator's perspective: Come on people, grow up. I'll lock this thread on the next pointless, combative, one liner. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. I thought this was the best book on BASE I've read. I've posted a review on Amazon.com, as well as here on DZ.com. I'll see if I can get Mick to add it to the BLiNC reviews as well. I'd really like to see a book on BASE do well, so I urge anyone who has the time and has read the book to post a review on Amazon. Here's my review: -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. I think that the difference was that in the 2nd one, the bottom guy just went straight to the rope, rather than TARDing a canopy. The rope cutaway system is essentially a 3 ring. You take a riser and attach it to the rope (where it would normally attach to the lines). Then you wear a climbing harness with a big carabiner clipped in to it. You set the 3 rings up with the carabiner as the bottom ring. Then you just cut away the riser with a handle (which you can attach to the riser, so you don't lose it). It's the same system you use for a rope swing from an object. It's just that here the "object" is the other jumper under canopy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. I made up a "10 things to do" list when I was about 25 years old. I thought it would take me the rest of my life. But, since I was single, unattached, and had reasonable finances, I ended up knocking them out about one every 6 months. The one I thought would be the last (make a BASE jump from a specific famous cliff in California), turned out to be just the start of a new adventure. Maybe it's time for a new list... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. Do you have a span in mind for that? I just don't know of one that's high enough to make it any fun to launch a wingsuit. Very few buildings approach that heigh, either. Wingsuit jumps from low altitudes (too low to get any real benefit from the suit) just haven't been that much fun for me. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. What did the thread have wrong? To me, the video pretty much looks like it matches up to the accounts given in the thread. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Atmonauti & BASE

When every solo becomes boring, it's time to go home. I don't think that Jimmy was trying to say "every" solo, though. And, dude, for you, I doubt it'll get boring for a while. What you are doing makes "normal" BASE seem about as exciting as skydiving--not dull, but suddenly just not quite at the top level. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Good Luck!

Ok. They're all done, and folks are headed home. Sounds like they got no love, due to weather. Nice attempt though. I love the concept--it's so BASE. I'll unlock this thread now. Keep in mind that I'll still edit out site names, and some jumper names (by request) as well. For those following along at home, this was about big way attempts being made from a not strictly legal object. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. I think it would be extremely difficult to characterize an entire continent as having a single attitude. I think that characterizing Europe in 1939 as having one attitude would be even harder. I doubt very much that, for example, the Germans and Poles had even vaguely similar attitudes. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. I recommend you ask Jason for the official position on this. I ain't touchin' that question with a 10' pole. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Atmonauti & BASE

Would atmonauti benefit from tracking wear (pants, jacket, etc)? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'd really like to see some wingsuit formations. Imagine a linked wingsuit diamond flying down a gorge. Now that would be cool. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. Have you had any wear issues on the Glocks? I've got a Beretta 92 and a Glock 21, and I've not put nearly the wear on the Glock that I have on the Beretta. I'm curious if you think it will hold up as well. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. I watched this jump from above. I've got video from roughly the same angle as the stills, but I'll have to dig it up if this isn't clear enough. Here's the basic idea: Two jumpers are connected by a rope. They both do simultaneous TARD jumps. Now they are both under canopy, still connected by the rope. One jumper cuts away his canopy. Now he is hanging from the rope, connected to the other jumper. The lower (hanging) jumper then cuts away from the rope, and goes back into freefall. The lower jumper then deploys a second canopy from a packed rig. In the case you have stills of, the second jumper ended up too low. In my opinion, had he not had a tree under him to break his fall (by catching the still inflating parachute) he probably would not have survived. The same two jumpers repeated the jump later in the day, with a significantly better outcome (no need for the tree to save the lower guy's life). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. I had a Sig compact (P229? is that the right number?) several years ago. I really liked it a lot. Have you shot that one? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. Nice job, Jason. I know you get all kinds of static for Bridge Day, and I just wanted to say I think you're doing a great job with it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Atmonauti & BASE

Can you define "atmonauti"? I'm not sure I'm familiar with the term. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. Not necessarily. But the inflation is slower, so the effects of toggle release are greater during the inflation. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. No picture. Is it just the avatar picture you're trying to update, or is it other info as well? I'm seeing a sig line of "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it superman? No! It's me..." And mini-profile shows: Jumps: 164 License: A 1139 In sport: 2 years ... Registered: Dec 14, 2002 Posts: 100 Do you want me to check the full profile and reproduce it in a post? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. I have. If you aren't fast enough unstowing the other toggle, you end up with a built in spin, because one brake is set. This effect is _much_ greater slider up (because the spin starts as the slider descends). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
