  1. You could post a suggestion that it be added. There's been several added smiley's: -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. The inline attachments are off. There is some discussion here. I think they were briefly turned on, but they sucked up a bunch of bandwidth (all those graphics reloading). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. The first time I did a McCutaway (McConkey, then cut away and deploy second rig), Yuri told me quite firmly that it was not a BASE jump. Since I didn't leave the cliff with my rig packed, and when I did use a packed rig, I didn't leave an object, I didn't qualify. Of course, the next thing he said was, "but if you had fun, who cares?" -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  4. I'd recommend contacting your locals, for that kind of info. If you're not sure who they are, drop me a PM, and I'll point you at the right folks. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. You might call Skydive Moab for more on that. I believe the DZO might be able to give you some information about the "intent to jump" business. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. Ants that can track. Now that's awesome.
  7. Where did you say you wanted to jump? You're either going to want to list Happy Isles trail head, Glacier Point trail head, Yosemite Creek Campground trail head or Yosemite Falls trail head. Send me a PM if you want specific info about which trailheads for which exits. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. I thought Parks were supposed to be for the recreation of the people? Aren't Conservation Areas and Wilderness Areas supposed to be the ones that stay pristine? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. Jason, If you have an address for well wishes (or condolences, if that becomes appropriate), could you post it? I think it would be nice if a bunch of jumpers could send cards. So I'll start. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. I'm assuming that freakydiver would rather not have those things, either. It's not my position, but I do understand. Freakydiver, what do you think of the idea of seasonal restrictions, to keep the outdoor recreation in the low season? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. And that, pretty much, is what it's all about. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. I wonder how many issued permits they would have to show to successfully argue that it wasn't a blanket policy? Is the one for Bridge Day (yearly) enough? I recently heard about some demo jumps (from aircraft) that landed on NPS property (with permission). That particular demo team gets to do all kinds of things that aren't normally allowed, though (they're military), so I wonder if allowing them to land could still be in keeping with a "blanket" rejection. Yes. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. How hard would it be to stay on someone's shoulders like that? Could you support yourself with, say, hands on shoulders? Or would we need some kind of seat apparatus? If hands on shoulders would work (with the person below holding your legs, of course), it ought to be easy enough to practice. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. So, assuming the law is the same, we ought to attach all of our denied applications to the letters to Congressmen? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. Jon, what kind of machine are you using? I found that it wasn't the machine, but the .pdf viewer that gave me trouble. I had to use the Adobe Acrobat reader to view the file on either a PC or a Mac. Other brands of .pdf readers didn't work. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. I believe that he People's Army is actually the world's largest corporation. Because they are a government agency, they generally escape the statistics, but if you look at what they own (manufacturing plants for consumer electronics, textiles, toys, etc, etc) and how they behave, they're pretty much a big multinational. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. Somewhere, Linus Pauling is smirking. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. I haven't taken his class, although I'd like to. But I did sit in on his seminar at PIA, about turbulence. Since that's a topic that I have a deep interest in (and probably a greater knowledge of than most skydivers, just because of some of the landing areas I've used), I didn't really expect to learn a lot. As others have said, I was wrong. Scott knows what he's talking about, for sure. And he's very patient about explaining things, and good at making them understandable. If he's ever giving a course anywhere near me, I'll definitely try to make it. I might even try to fly out and take one somewhere not so near me. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. I moved from Birmingham last spring (I now live in one of the world's best spots for my parachuting thing, so I can't complain). I jumped (a little) at both Pell City and Cullman. I have a slight preference for Cullman, mostly on "vibe" things. I liked the parties at Cullman, and the relaxed attitude. Pell City seemed a fair bit younger and more eager to jump (so, which you prefer will depend on your personal desires). Maybe I'm just an old fogey who can't get motivated to make more than a couple skydives in a day (or maybe airplanes just kind of scare me). There's also the whole ASC political thing, if you care about that (personally, I don't, but I know some people avoid Pell City for that reason). I think both are great places. I'd definitely recommend trying them both out (once you've finished your training, wherever you decide to do it). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. The NPS has already established a precedent of allowing some activities at "low season" times that they don't allow during peak season. The primary activity regulated seasonally like this is the driving of private automobiles in some National Parks. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. Probably. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. Hmmm. Let me dig them out. Most of mine are of the "Dear NPS, I'd like to apply for a permit" rather than the "Dear Congressman, I want the rules changed," variety. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. I've actually written more than one. I think I'm approaching 50 (but I tend to send them in batches, one to each park that has a jumpable exit I know about). I'd say I get up the motivation to send off my letter about once or twice a year. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. You can watch the video of what I'd do over hard land on sm.com. I always carry a hook knife, but the practice jumps I did were slider down. I actually found that it's surprisingly hard to pack yourself a line over. They tend to clear during deployment. On every rig. I'd probably try to equalize the spin with opposite toggle pressure, and just splash down. If I couldn't equalize it, I'd try more extreme measures (like cutting or releasing the line). My basic line over response is: 1) Pump toggles twice to try to clear line over. If that doesn't work, proceed to (5). 2) Try to equalize spin with opposite toggle. If that doesn't work, proceed to (5) 3) Evaluate landability of line over. If not landable, proceed to (5). 4) Land with lined over or cleared canopy. 5) Use WLO toggle (if on this rig) or hook knife to release line over. 6) Land on rear risers. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. Not true. I slammed every person who thinks it's ok to take a hundred bucks and put someone with no experience (of any kind) off for a BASE jump. I'll stand by that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
