    BASE RIG

Come on guys, ease up. I think he's got the idea, at this point. Any more harshing on him is likely to be counterproductive. I've removed a couple of "you're a moron" type posts. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    another low pull

The story has been told many times. Try searching the wingsuit forum, and I'm sure you can find it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    BASE RIG

No one is trying to stop you from having fun. Several people (with varying degrees of adeptness) are trying to keep you from hurting yourself. It's a lot more fun if you do it in a way that lets you continue having fun. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    another low pull

Well, strictly speaking, a Russian already has landing a wingsuit, even if not quite intentionally. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. I have no idea. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. Wow, that sucks. That pretty much leaves me no reason to stay there anymore. So where is the best place to pack indoors if it's windy out? Ameritel has a pretty good conference room. Or you could just start using the "Tom's Super Controlled pack job", specially formulated to allow packing in gale force winds. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. I've stayed at the Red Lion. It was a non-jumping trip (before I lived here, of course), so I can't comment on packing areas, but the rooms were generally acceptable, and there is a nice hot tub. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. The Shiloh no longer allows jumpers to pack in the conference room or hallways. Some jumpers here a few weeks ago had problems with the management there on this issue (bad enough that the jumpers, who had never stayed anywhere else in their 4 years of visiting Twin, decided they would not return to the Shiloh). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've locked this thread. There are many (9 at my last count) threads on this topic in the various forums here. The moderators are trying to consolidate the discussion into fewer threads, to help people avoid having to read all of them to keep up on the information. Please post condolences to the thread in General Skydiving, and incident questions or details to the thread in Incidents. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. The pain meds discussion is kind of funny. When you have a spinal cord injury, and can't feel your body's pain, your body still has the pain, and it generally ends up in a condition called dysreflexia. Which means that even if you can't feel the pain, you still have to take the pain meds. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. As far as I know, the Neo is no longer produced. So to get one, you'll need to look for secondhand. Try the classifieds, maybe? You might also try PMing Kevin, and seeing if he's interested in sewing one for you. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. There are 8 other threads going on this incident. I'm going to lock this one to try to keep the discussion just a touch more coherent. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. Ah, yes, the "Xtreme Factor." The divers actually have it harder, in a way, because they have to time the maneuver to end when they hit the water. A BASE jumper gets to pick where the "water" (i.e. deployment) occurs, so he can just pitch when he finishes the maneuver. There haven't been enough competitions to say, and besides, it's not like everyone shows up at them. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. I believe Russel is scheduled to leave the hospital and head home sometime this week, so if you want his home address to send a card, drop me a PM. The crazy thing here is that his injuries were apparently sustained as a result of opening shock. With weaker bones and no muscle tone, his lower body just doesn't seem to be able to take the openings after slider down delays. He's really inventing a whole new sport from the ground up here, which means learning everything, with no one else to help share out the learning experiences. Heal well, Russel. Let me know if there is anything I can do. And we think we have to deal with hard openings--when was the last time an opening broke your femur? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. I don't think there is a recognized single "best" aerialist at the moment. If you are looking for people to watch on video, dig up some Dwain video. Or find some footage of Slim. If you want to see really good aerobatic maneuvers, you probably ought to just go watch a University diving competition. Those folks are waaaay better than any BASE jumper. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Sail/Mesh slider...

I have "back problems" too (twice broken, 3 vertebrae fused, one vertebrae replaced with a cage). I can still tolerate large hole mesh and a ZP topskin at terminal. I can't imagine how bad your back would have to be for you to _need_ a sail slider. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Sail/Mesh slider...

I'm personally not a fan of sail sliders on BASE jumps. They're pretty well out of the mainstream at this point. If I wanted to slow my opening down, I'd go with smaller mesh, and after that I'd start to reconsider the jump. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. What are you doing with the nose? Are you using direct control of the slider? Tightening up the direct control can greatly soften the opening. So can rolling the nose (but do so symmetrically, as Leroy points out). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. I was wondering if maybe he didn't get full inflation. In which case, he survived by the very thinnest of margins, and with incredible luck missed both the damage of a hard slider down opening and the damage of a hard impact, sneaking into the 10th of a second between them. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. But the government always knows what's best for you...and for your children. Don't they? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. Honestly, my results were not good. But I don't think that's fair to the SG as a suit, because the SG demo was far too big for me. So I'll just leave my comments at that, for now. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. What kind of PC are you using? I've seen this sort of thing with ZP, less of it with apex vented, and virtually none with F-111. Also, what kind of rig? I wonder if a velcro rig would dampen the effect, because the shrivel flap would take more force to pull. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. Have you filmed the pitch to see if you are spinning the PC? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
