  1. I was in an Apple store yesterday, and I'm pretty sure they've discontinued the standard 40gig iPod. You can get either a 20 or a photo 40 (or photo 60). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. I'm just waiting for Avery to enter that first competition--and what he'll call out as his flight plan just before exit... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. Sure there is. The instructors (the ones providing the "good, heads up instruction") will generally say it. It's exceedingly difficult (close to impossible) to find an actual qualified BASE instructor who will teach a student with no skydiving experience. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  4. This is a popular misconception. The majority of the BASE jumps made in the world today are made legally. That's not a semantic game, or anything based on the actual jump being legal. The majority of jumps are made without breaking any laws--no trespassing, no aerial delivery, no law breaking. There are many BASE jumps made under less than legal circumstances. There are also many (more) made in completely legal situations. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. When I talke to that farmer a couple years ago (not sure it's still the same farmer), he asked us to walk along the very edges of his fields (closest to the edge of the cliff). Do you know if this is still what he wants? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. Russel's situation is pretty special. Since his bones don't bear weight, they are much weaker than most people's. I don't think the opening was much harder than normal--it's just that his body has more trouble with it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. That's a rather largish "if". -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. Yes. Look at it this way. Osama bin Laden believes that the godlessness in the USA required immediate action, regardless of the wishes of those living in the USA. Are we as certain of our righteousness (in the environmental arena or any other) as he is, that we would impose our will on the world? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. It gets sticky when you start telling people that they can't develop their own land, though. And even stickier when you come from the USA and tell people in poorer and militarily weaker parts of the world what to do. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. It totally depends on the individual canopies. But in general, BASE canopies are trimmed steeply (shorter A's), to help inflation (a downward pointed nose scoops more air during low airspeed inflation). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. I believe this was the "Dagger". Their new canopy is called the Rock Dragon, and is manufactured by Precision Aerodynamics iirc. NickNitro is correct. Before the Dagger, Vertigo's canopy was the Dragon. The Dragon has since been discontinued, superseded by the Dagger. The Rock Dragon (a 3rd canopy) was introduced much more recently. The Rock Dragon and Dagger both continue to be sold concurrently by Apex, and are complementary canopies, for different jumping styles. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. Unfortunately, it does have an impact on other people. Because the government sanctions marriage, there are a whole host of benefits available only to those who have government endorsement of their marriage (insurance benefits from a spouse, rights of survivorship in property, if you want we can start a long list). Unfortunately, some of these benefits amount to the government forcing an extension of one persons benefits to another (the spouse). So, extending the category of "spouse" will naturally extend the level of the governments coercion, as well as incurring additional public expenditures. Personally, I think the whole thing could be solved if the government got out of the business of regulating marriage. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. I thought Christians followed both old and new? I'm not too current on Christian dogma, so I could be wrong. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. Pretty much. It's roughly the same (although orders of magnitude less) feel as when we (the US, or citizens thereof) show up in central america and start telling them what they need to do with their rain forest. Doesn't sit so well. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. Some people who live in the effected areas might not agree with you. The general feeling in Idaho is "you big city liberals go back to your cities--us folks that live in the woods are the ones who this concerns." It does seem a little odd that the folks who argue most stridently for environmentalism tend to be the ones who live in cities--and hence don't have to deal with the regulatory impact on a daily basis. I wonder how the urbanites would feel if us hicks showed up and started demanding better conservation of skyscrapers, or some such? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. Can you provide a historical reference for this statement? I'm not doubting it, but I do know that there were several important course cases involving married slaves. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. It becomes very difficult to differentiate sometimes, though. That's the basis of the Supreme's "separate is inherently unequal" reasoning. Real life doesn't always give us a clear indicator if we are the first class or the steerage passengers. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. When I was in college, there were classes I was barred from enrolling in due to my skin color. Would you defend such practices as fair, or was I a second class citizen back then? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. I've removed this from the Walmart thread. Ron, Narcimund, you guys need to make this less personal. It's all good to discuss the issue of gay marriage. When you start telling people that they are your enemy, or they need to talk to the wall...you need to step away from the keyboard and go make a skydive, or something. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. Makes sense. There's no reason to have 2 zippers if you can do the same job with 1. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. I've removed the endless string of Ron v. Narcimund posts from this thread. Can we try to keep this thread on topic, guys? If you want to discuss gay marriage, you can start a new thread for that. If you want to talk about other poster's personal beliefs or choices, I'd recommend taking it to PM or email. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. Given the derivation, the other options would have been "Sam-Mart" and "Ton-Mart." Neither is noticeably less tacky than Walmart, in my opinion. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. ? Dude, that's not clear at all. Bats flap their wings, like birds. Wingsuits hold their wings steady, like aircraft. I'm assuming that their are acrobatic aircraft with scalloped wings? (I'm not trying to be a smart ass, here, I really don't know, and assume that's where this wing design would come from). Kudos on the scalloped design. Those wind tunnel guys must have really earned their keep. When I think about the complexity of trying to design an airfoil surface that has a constantly varying surface angle like that, well, my mind boggles. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. I bet you it's easier to manufacture. Hence cheaper (both to make and on the street). Since the suit is also coming in pre-fit sizes, and pre-selected colors, I'd assume that cost was a driver in development. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. I'm reproducing this from a post by a local there. If you are planning a trip there, please read this, and please follow the guidelines he lays out: -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
