    Skydive setup

A very large student skydiving container should do the trick. Accuracy containers also ought to fit the canopy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  4. Hey, If anyone gets through on the phone, and find out that rooms are definitely sold out, can you post in this thread? People still trying will doubtless find it helpful to know when the rooms are gone, so they can stop playing the redial game. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    TF 9/14 - 9/19

You can call Don and get boat service. He's available pretty late into the fall, but as it gets later he's not on the river every day, so the best bet is to call him in advance and make sure he'll be around. What kind of hotel are you looking for? A lot of people like the Super 8 because it's fairly cheap, but nicer than Motel 6. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    UK Mast

I've edited this thread to remove the site name. Please read the Before You Post! guidelines linked at the top of every page in this forum. For UK specific information, you ought to visit BASEjumper.org. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. If you can't jump it, just lay it out all flat on one side. You can leave it like this, or fold it up a bit for storage. Leaving it like this for a while takes out a lot of the wrinkles. If you're particular about wrinkles and don't want to leave the canopy packed for whatever reason, you can store it like this regularly. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. I have and jump a canopy which effectively transfers pressure from the inside to the bottom surface. This is a (last-generation) FOX Vtec BASE canopy. It has open, 2 way vents on the bottom skin. These lead to a weaker flare, and a tendency to "accordion" and lose stability during hard toggle turns. BASE canopies have since moved on to one way valves that allow pressure transfer between bottom and interior in only one direction (inward). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. All, I am teaching this week. That means I'm jumping, or doing jumping related stuff, about 12 or 14 hours every day. This leaves me no time to babysit this thread. Hence, I am locking it for now. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. I hope I never have your doctor. I have chronic back pain (resulting from high speed impact after a low pull), and not one of the (6 or 7) doctors I've seen for it has prescribed bed rest and painkillers. The general consensus of my doctors has been that exercise and physical therapy are the right things for me to do. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. In my area, the vast majority of insurance plans don't require referrals of any kind. The patient simply selects the doctor they want to see and calls for an appointment. Definitely a regional difference, in that way. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. Ah, I see. I think it may be a bit ambiguous as written. It does say "at the bridge", but then, as a separate sentence says "he was first." I was reading the "he was first" bit as applying to the entire concept of holding week long camps, because that was what I understood as the topic of the overall post. In other words, I read the post as being about a teaching methodology, rather than a location, and I read the separate sentence about being the first to use that methodology as applying to the entire post. Apologies for my confusion. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. Um, gosh. Pretty much every time since I moved out of California. I wonder if it might be a state-by-state difference. The vast majority of doctors I've seen have spent more time with me than I spent waiting for them. I really think that what it mostly boils down to is patient attitudes. If you have a positive outlook, and (I believe most important) actually want to get better, your odds of recovery are far better. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. I'm sorry. I had thought that I was pretty clear. The point I was trying to make was that the first person to teach with a weeklong camp format was Dennis. You had stated that it was Johnny, which is factually inaccurate. I was just trying to correct that inaccuracy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. I'm pretty sure that Dennis McGlynn was the first BASE instructor to use a "camp" format, and the first to use the word "camp" to describe his "cliff camps" held in the early 90's. I agree that this is an excellent format, because it gives: a) More time to absorb information b) More chances to ask questions c) More time with the instructor available d) A chance for students to build positive relationships with each other -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. Um, what about those other external factors, viruses and bacteria? I'd always thought they caused quite a bit of disease, too? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. Believe it or not I knew that. Which is why I said it would be like expecting an herbalist to know acupuncture (not vice versa). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. Why would you expect him to have extensive knowledge of musculo-skeletal issues, then? That'd be a bit like expecting an herbalist to know acupuncture, I'd think. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. What is his specialty? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. I'm one of those people who's told you so. But I'll tell you again. Your articles were invaluable to me, and to many others, when starting into BASE. And at the time, they were one of the few sources of good information that were readily available on the internet. Thank you. A while back, I wrote up a "how to static line" guide, by request from a new jumper, and posted it in a couple places. Fairly recently, that same guy, no longer a new jumper, wrote up a better version of the same, and posted it on the forum here. It's all a circle...
  21. If I recall correctly from the beginnings of this discussion, she does not own gear, and does not know how to pack it. With that in mind, I think the risk that she'll go chuck herself off something alone is fairly low. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. I have had the opportunity to meet many doctors both professionally and socially. Almost universally, they try to address "lifestyle" issues first. Usually, the are quite frustrated by patients who just want a "magic pill" to fix the problem. I can't count the number of times I've heard "if they'd just lose 50 pounds, they wouldn't need any medication..." Doctors are very cognizant of other contributing factors, and generally try to address those factors first. It's just that we patients are often too lazy to do our PT exercises, or just get some exercise, or lose weight, or whatever, because we think it's easier to just take that magic pill that will cure whatever ails us. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. There are also restrictions on who the gifts can be to. So, 30 years ago, you'd see gifts given to spouses, children, etc. Nowadays, that's pretty much off limits. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. They can't tie the things they give out to actual prescription or delivery of the pharmaceuticals. Drug reps come by doctors offices all the time (I'd guess my wife [and generally her whole office staff] gets lunch from drug reps twice a week, on average), handing out stuff--food is most common, but pens, mugs, etc. They also leave samples of the medication. Most doctors use the samples as a way to give medication out to patients they know can't afford to buy it (so an indigent patient might go home with a prescription and a handful of sample packets). But drug reps are definitely not allowed to give doctors some kind of incentive or reimbursements (i.e. kickbacks) for prescribing specific medications. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. I can say with authority that this is a violation of federal law in the United States. Can you cite actual instances of this occuring, or are you outside the US? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
