I'm pretty sure the Phantom is the intermediate suit. From the Phoenix Fly Products Page: -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Definitely ask around on the UK forum. The only BASE course I know of in the UK has a very sketchy reputation. Be aware of what you are getting into. With Morpheus (previously mostly preferred by the UK BASE set) sitting out of the instruction business, I'd say Apex is your best bet, but you're going to have to travel to the States for that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Probably. He's done them in the past. I've also got some nice video interviews with a city councilman, the president of the TF Chamber of Commerce, and a couple business owners. I'm trying to get all that on one tape to send to Jason, but I'm pretty much just a lazy bastard. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Jan, Just to clarify; Do you have a complaint with Jump For the Cause? And if so, is it an issue with: The organizers? The underlying cause? The individuals participating? Specific activities, such as the calendar (any other things)? I'm honestly curious. It seems like you do have some hard feelings in there, and for those of us observing from afar, it's hard to sort out just exactly what your complaint is. If you'd be willing to enumerate what you think the bad (and the good, if any) parts are, it'd help make things less confusing for some. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I believe the correct term is "Birdbabe." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think that's a great point. You might also try interviewing people who look "off type" or "more respectable" to break up stereotypes. Rick Harrison is great for this when he's in "respectable" mode (he is, after all, an attorney who works for the department of defense). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It would probably be cheaper to find an exisiting site that was being decommissioned, and buy it in it's entirety (including the land and the anchors--which are the really expensive bit for new construction). I know that there was a decommissioned tower that was being jumped pretty regularly a few years ago (one jumper even hauled a big plank up to the top to use as a diving board), but I'm not sure if it was ever available for purchase or not, and I think it was eventually torn down. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Consider the alternatives. No matter who we vote for, our standards have got to be pretty low. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've always thought the best way would be to tell your own BASE story. Start with you, pre-jumping, and follow along as you learn and progress, then start following your journey through BASE. I doubt that would be easily doable in the time frame you have, because I'd picture something along the lines of an hour long documentary that would start with you wanting to jump, and end with you a few years later, with a couple hundred jumps. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Can you tell us how many jumps you have on that canopy, and how many jumps you have on which other canopies you are using as a basis for the comparison? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It'd be better if they had an automatic winch that reeled it in and let it out at intervals. You could lock an anchor to it and ride it to altitude. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In general, I agree with you, but... I've seen quite a few jumpers who only plan on doing terminal jumps, or span jumps, but have purchased vented canopies. If you have unlimited resources, that seems fine. But there are people who will simply never make a jump from a solid object, and for those people it does seem like a certain amount of wasted cash to fork over the extra couple hundred dollars for bottom skin inlets. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

This is very, very true. Let me add that there are a large number of those people who basically think that whatever they've always jumped is the best--without really trying anything else. I can't count the number of people who I've met who would swear that their Blackjack/Troll/Flik/Dagger was "the best canopy made" but when pressed, admitted that they had never really jumped anything else. They bought a particular canopy because that's what their friend/mentor/instructor had, and then they decided it was "the best". The funny thing is that the friend/mentor/instructor often did exactly the same thing, so we see "generations" of jumpers who jump whatever their "forefathers" jumped, with none of those generations ever trying a different set of gear. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Shane, Do you know if Miles is going to keep that foundation up and running after this? I need a local charity to make my students give money to, and if this is ongoing, it looks ideal for that kind of thing. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In my experience this has not been the case in BASE. In BASE jumping, most of the complaints about these jumpers have been due to things like site burning, death camping, etc. I've heard some sponsored people trying to pass this off as "it's just jealousy". I don't believe that to be the case. Take a look at Jeb Corliss, for example, or Troy Hartmann. The BASE community has exhibited virtually zero "jealousy" in those cases, mostly because those guys are generally behaving in an ethical manner, from a BASE viewpoint. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Terminal, always. Subterminal, most of the time. I use more wraps at terminal. I think that more wraps, and a larger bight, are quite effective at staging and "taming" terminal openings. For subterminal, it's usually either one wrap and a folded (i.e. double) bight of slider, or two wraps on one piece of slider. Which of those I use depends on the trim of the particular canopy (i.e. where the slider meets the C line attachments). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think the packing tent is actually going to be at the bottom. He's got some system where they run the rigs up for him once they're packed. I think it's pretty cool. I'm also pretty impressed that he's doing it for charity, and I think he's generating a lot of good PR for BASE jumpers in Twin Falls. Nice job, Miles, and good luck! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

...and... I use the technique described by 736 on virtually all my terminal openings, and also virtually all of my slider down subterminal openings. I rarely use it on slider up subterminal jumps. I believe this can encourage inflation through the center cell, which, in theory, ought to improve opening heading. I haven't noticed any significant slowing on the slider down stuff (I've taken the "rolled cells" pack job under 200 feet as a free fall with good results). At terminal, I'm not sure if the openings are slowed by it or not, but I can say that they are not too slow. As long as I'm not pulling extremely low (under 300' or so), I'm very happy with this pack job at terminal. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
