These are two very distinct questions. Are you looking for the best flare, or the one that flares most similar to the BASE canopy you are going to use? BASE canopies. Ideally, find a used version of the BASE canopy you will be jumping, and practice with that. A better questions might be "which has the flare most similar to my intended BASE canopy, so that I can practice making that flare?" -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I can't say for sure with a Rock Dragon, but I would guess so. With a Blackjack or Troll MDV, I'd have no concerns about clearing the fence. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Yup. Be very careful landing with crampons. It's hard to run out the landing, because they tend to stick, which can result in twisted ankles, etc. Be very sure of your landing. It's common to lash the ice axe to your leg, with the axe head roughly inline with your foot and the shaft running up toward your knee. Since most ice axes have a sharp point at the end of the shaft, you must be very aware of it's location if you need to PLF or otherwise crash land. My general opinion is that unless there's a super cool jump that couldn't be had otherwise, there's absolutely no reason to add the extra risk factors. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think that if you have a weird feeling it increases the chances of something going wrong on that jump, because it throws off your mental state. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

The problem with those little quote blurbs is that you often end up talking to the reporter for a long time, and then they draw out one little part of a sentence, and potentially use it out of (the usually much larger) context. I've seen 45 minute talks get reduced down to one sentence that sounded cool (and sensational) to the reporter. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

There's already a flight simulator with a wingsuit plugin. I don't remember what it's called, just that there was a discussion about it in the wingsuit forum a while back. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

3/8" solid core cable. I've got a LAD-SAF L3300, made by DB Industries of Red Wing, MN, USA. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In some circles, it's more a survival trait. I think that BASE 733 might be interested in contacting you regarding some clinical trials. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think what's really needed is a multi-million dollar testing budget, to verify the realism of the ingame physics. Clearly, jumpers need to be equipped with a bunch of testing sensors to precisely record opening characteristics and altitudes, and perform thousands of test jumps. In order to maximize realism, testing will need to be done from hundreds of different objects of various types, all over the world. I'm willing to do this testing, provided sufficient budgeet, for a relatively modest sub-contract fee. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Blue skies. And condolences to family and friends. It's weird to reflect on the different things that can happen with roughly similar incidents. I know a guy who struck a wire, hung up, and was rescued uninjured by other jumpers, another guy who ended up on national television with injuries, and yet another who made the last big leap. And no way to predict which it would be, in which case. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Or you burn enough sites that a crowd of jumpers shows up, trashes your rig, and leaves you covered in tar and feathers? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It's pretty funny how every time one of these videos gets put up on one of the "rotten" type sites, it gets reposted here over and over and over... All, please search the forums before posting. There may already be a ton of information on what you are going to post. In at least one case, people were posting this type of video months after the jumper involved had already made a post explaining what had happened. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Why? Jimmy and Marta have a class starting tomorrow, and I'm doing one the first weekend in December. Classes slow down as it gets colder, but you can still find them. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Have you demoed both? Next time you're in Twin (if you haven't already decided by then) you're welcome to just borrow one of my velcro rigs for three days, and put a bunch of jumps on it. Then you'll be in a position to make a more educated decision. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If you're happy with the pin rig, I'd probably say get another one. If all your gear is identical it's harder to get confused. On the other hand, if you just want to try a bunch of stuff to gain more knowledge, velcro is pretty cool. Weren't you just saying that you were too poor to skydive? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
