I think 27.5 degrees was the glide angle, not the angle of attack. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think that many mountain biking and skiing/snowboarding helmets offer roughly the same protection. I don't think it's as easy as one broad category v. the other, as there will be better and worse helmets within each category. Generally, the snowsport helmets include some kind of ear flaps (intended to keep your ears warm) that can make it hard to hear exit counts and such. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I use a pendulator in my courses in Twin Falls. I also built one for my course at Bridge Day this year. I actually think it's a pretty valuable tool for both physical (getting the exit right) and psychological (trying to do so while a bit freaked out) preparation. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Static line jumpers, best to ignore them?
TomAiello replied to artistcalledian's topic in The Bonfire
Come visit me. I've got a static line jump I guarantee will scare the piss out of you. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
I have experienced noticeably greater rates of PC hesitation with larger PC's, especially when stowed. I quit stowing a 46" I had a couple years ago because of this. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Sure, you can post it. Are there any shots from the Royal Gorge in there? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think that we are seeing more people becoming overconfident because of their ability to survive things in Idaho. You'll have folks who have thrown something off this bridge a hundred times, and they get to Moab and think, "well, it can't be that hard, I mean, I did it in Twin a whole bunch..." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

NE - Nebraksa; or NE = New England? If it's #2, go find the Spiders from Mars. Skydive New England is a good place to start looking. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Isn't that what the whuffos say about the jumpers? And, come to think of it, isn't that a pretty good description of Skydive Arizona? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Please review the forum rules, in relevant part: I'm going to lock this for now. Please, let's try to move on from this issue. I don't normally hang out in the Bonfire much, but today y'all are causing the regular BF mods to pull their hair out--and call for reinforcements. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Actually, this website does belong to one person. He decided that this wasn't something he wanted hashed out on his forums. That's pretty much the end of the discussion, regardless of what I, or any other moderator, or anyone else, thinks about it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Border control affecting US jump sites near Mexican border
TomAiello replied to 460's topic in BASE Jumping
I know some guys who got busted by the border patrol. They pretty much just let them go with a "well, we aren't really here for that." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -

Yo, Leroy... Don't think. You don't wear it very well. -me p.s. Fuck Off. Come on, that's uncalled for. It's also a personal attack. I've banned you from this forum for 14 days. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

This is starting to look like a marketing debate. In my opinion, the FAQ ought to either reflect the beginner specific suits that it does now, or simply have a list of all possible suits, with a note to ask you instructor which is suitable for a beginner. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It's largely National Recreation Area, which is administered by the National Park Service. There are a few chunks that are Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation, but it's mostly NPS. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Well, if it's a girl, and she's born on Abbie and Collin's birthday, we're going back and forth between naming her for both of them (something like Abigail Coleen sounds pretty good), or just naming her for Abbie alone (Jezebel Harlot Aiello does kind of have a nice ring to it). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If they're selling them for a thousand bucks an acre, I know a couple acres I'll buy personally. If the jumpers own them, the government could never shut them down. If the government owns them, the government can shut them down whenever they want. I'm not so sure this is a bad thing. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

B.J. Worth did that stunt. I know that for sure. Was he being helped by Malnuit? Perhaps there were multiple takes, or multiple jumpers? No disrespect to BJ Worth, who is rightfully a legend in skydiving, but Zoo is one of the world's most experienced BASE jumpers, and if I were looking for someone to make a stunt BASE jump, I'd probably pick him first. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

You might want to have a look at this article by Tom Begic, which is sub-titled "Why a BASE jump is not a skydive--You can't skydive from a cliff". Some of the easiest differences to point out: 1) On a 3000 ft skydive, you can dump immediately without fear of major consequences. Dumping immediately with a slider up rig on a 3000 foot cliff is very dangerous. 2) When you exit an aircraft at 3000 feet, you don't track for 10 or 12 seconds (minimum) before dumping, and you don't dump 500 feet off the deck. 3) When you have a 180 with line twists dumping at 3000 feet on a skydive, you don't immediately and repeatedly smack the side of a very large cliff and plummet to your death. I'd definitely point your friend toward some of the very experienced skydivers who are also very experienced BASE jumpers (or even moderately experienced BASE jumpers). Perhaps if your friend can easily disregard your opinion, they are more likely to be swayed by those of people they might respect in the skydiving context. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
