How do I find an old Marine recruiting poster...
TomAiello replied to jumpergirl's topic in The Bonfire
The surest way to get a recruiter to leave you alone is to tell him that you've been accepted to a service academy. Telling them you've already enlisted in something else can also work, so long as the two recruiters don't share office space. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
Article here in Outside magazine's on-line edition. edit to add: That makes it less than 6 hours from the time an Outside reporter posted here looking for comments to the time the article was online. It's also interesting how much of that appeared to have been drawn from discussions on this forum (look Leroy, you're famous! ). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Serious question (I know you're going to laugh): Will it cover gear lost to government confiscation? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

That's what they posted on this forum, in another thread about it. I know that I've seen a couple Karskland jumpers with full on homemade tracking suits (1 piece for the entire body), which also sported some interesting additions--a hard plastic (maybe lexan?) butt deflector about the size of the head of a snow shovel was perhaps the most interesting. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

You can avoid this by just re-importing the song from the burned CD, and then burning CD's from that "copy." Personally, I've only once wanted to burn more than a few copies of a purchased song (when I got married, we made CD's for all the guests with our wedding mix on it), so this hasn't been much of an issue for me. I find it interesting that one of our most common gripes with iPod/iTunes is that it makes us follow the rules about duplicating stuff. That alone ought to tell us something. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Most BASE Jumps in a day: New record?

Do they have to be able to walk? Cheri's due in about 2 weeks. Do you have standard sizing, or will I have to wait until after we get home from the hospital to measure Junior? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Here's my translation of what she said: 1) Ask your specific surgeon about your fusion. The guy who has actually been inside your back is going to have the best perspective on what it can and cannot do. 2) Once the bone healing has taken place (your surgeon can tell you when this has happened), there shouldn't be any drawbacks to strengthening your core muscles (abs and back). 3) Don't give up something you love. You may have to adjust your skydiving to take new risks into account (for example, it may be a good idea to upsize your canopy), but as long as you can adjust your participation to take into account any additional risks, there is no reason you would have to stop skydiving. Giving up the things that make your life fulfilling will not help your recovery. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'm pretty much exclusively doing BASE jumps (I don't really skydive very much). Slider down openings are typically much harder than skydiving openings. They haven't really caused me any problems at all. The rest of my spine is suffering from various "related" issues (mostly postural issues causing pain), but none of them seem to stem directly from openings (or anything else jumping related). I do quite a bit of regular ab/back exercises. My experience was that the physical therapy type rehab exercises were by far the most effective at relieving pain over the long term. I'd guess that your surgeon was warning you against doing flexibility exercises prior to the vertebrae fusing. After they grow together, I can't imagine any downside to doing exercises. For what it's worth, the thing that helps me most with the pain from all these back injuries is regular exercise. My wife is a doctor whose specialty includes rehabilitation of spinal cord injury. I'll ask her to look at this thread. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Are you asking about the flight discussed in this thread? If it's the same one, can we keep the discussion there? Visa (the first guy to fly a wingsuit with jet engines, as far as I know) posted in that thread with the answers to a bunch of questions. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'm thinking that the fact they've found the owner may mean the tower is still transmitting. If that's the case, permanently grounding it would definitely not be a good idea. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I believe he's talking about the jumper who's picture is actually printed on the disk itself--not the cover jacket. He's posted in this thread, so I imagine he can let us know if he made the video. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Did you watch Firefly? Did you see Serenity?
TomAiello replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in The Bonfire
In addition to Firefly, I own the entire Buffy and Angel series on DVD. I also listen to country music. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -

TomAiello replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in The Bonfire
I don't know if they even recorded a "full" version, but the theme song as used on the show (so, it's only 50 seconds long or something) can be downloaded here, from the FireFly Wiki. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -

This thread made me laugh out loud. I used to read a random gaming forum. One time, in the off topic section, someone posted a BASE video. A discussion about it started, so I stepped in to clear up some confusion. What followed was a huge torrent of "no way that you're a real BASE jumper, you're faking this" posts. That continued even after I had discussed the folks in the original video (several of them were good friends of mine) and posted some links to various BASE related things of mine on line. Bottom line? Everyone has to do something. And the people who do those things all have real lives outside of that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Ever Bought a House and Used TurboTax for that year?
TomAiello replied to flyhi's topic in The Bonfire
Yes. And yes. Turbotax works great for simple home purchase and ownership type transactions. It does have some trouble if you start making more complex transactions involving rentals, exchanges, etc. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
It's sometimes hard to get a phone you can slip a new simcard into. The phone companies tend to "lock" the phone so that you can't do that. You might try getting on eBay and looking for "unlocked" phones. T-Mobile has worldwide roaming, where calls can be made to and from your home number, no matter where in the world you are. The service is cheap (a few dollars a month extra) to activate, but very pricey ($1-5 per minute, depending on where you are) to use. It's very convenient, though. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

That's actually just one segment that looks like it was cut out of the longer video. If you do a search for "Jeb Corliss" or "Year in the Life" you can find the original video. Some of that footage is also on "Ground is the Limit." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It is possible to strike the side of the canyon under canopy, though. I've actually come close enough to that side, under line twists, that I was concerned. Freefall object strikes are incredibly rare. Strikes under canopy are far more likely. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
