I don't think Jaap is necessarily blessed with an abundance of objects good for downwind jumps. Cliffs, for example, translate tailwinds into rotoring headwinds and downdrafts on the face itself. P.S. Why wait? If you can get Iraq BASE, I think you'll be able to claim #1, and also prove yourself the hardest BASE jumper since Dead Steve. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I actually know a lot of people who've taken the risks, paid the price, and try to counsel other people to avoid it. In the context of the movie, the old guy might have done a stretch of hard time, and wants to help the young guy avoid it (note that I've not actually seen this film). In the context of BASE, the old guy may have seen a bit of carnage, and wants to help the young guy avoid being part of the next round. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

No. Hell YES! If we include a good swimming segment (say, you have to swim back to centennial park after every jump) I stand a good chance of being crowned "World's Best BASE Jumper" on the strength of my swimming skills. It's all about stacking the competition to your own strengths, baby. Can we throw in an elevator hot-wiring event, too? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

To keep it as real as possible, all IronBASE competitors will be required to drink until they vomit beginning at 11pm the night before the competition. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Let's keep the discussion in the original thread that hookitt linked. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

The thing I'm having trouble doing is importing a PAL video into iMovie. I've got it on PAL MiniDV, but iMovie won't let me create a PAL project to bring it into. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Completely agree. If it's just a cheap practice canopy, I'd probably take whichever came up first and go with it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

wolves to be killed with few restrictions in wyoming
TomAiello replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Do you have a reference for that? I don't have any hard numbers, just a suspicion that the impact of wolves may be over-estimated for psychological reasons. Ever read Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
I'm in the opposite boat. I've jumped both canopies (I own a Fury currently, but not a Raven), but never slider-up (on either canopy). My experience was that the Raven gave softer landings, and had better glide (which seems opposite of your experience). Is it possible that I've just got a Fury that is older or more clapped out than the Raven I jumped? I also thought the Raven had better slider down openings, but that's irrelevant to the present discussion. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I tune both my shallow and deep brakes. My experience has been that you generall need to tune 2 different shallow brake settings. One is for generally sub-terminal slider up, and one (slightly deeper) can be used for terminal slider up. This means that if you tune your SBS out of a plane, you can often set it too deep for a subterminal slider up jump, and experience an opening stall. If you read through some of the old ABA forum posts, you can find a very good post by Jason F. in which he discusses his thoughts and experiences with the variances between the optimal brake setting for terminal and sub-terminal slider up deployments. I'm too lazy to dig it up right now, but if anyone finds it, can you post a link here? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think he just wanted it for skydives, to practice for BASE. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Pete, I know you built a rig with a little pocket in it for what was undoubtedly an FCC approved use of some radio equipment. Have you ever built/used one with a camelback pocket? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

With the same lines (see hookitt's post), I'd go with the Raven. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Nope, it's not a general rule. It's a moderator judgement call. I've asked Alex to change his avatar, because I think it creates confusion in our community, and I believe that one of the fundamental principles of this community (and almost any on-line community) is that people should have consistent identities. Note the use of the word "asked" in the above sentence. I'd prefer that we work at that level. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

For better or worse (personally I think it's better), litigation has little to do with the way these forums operate. We are able to operate on a more personal level than that. I really doubt that. Because if there was, it would probably require action on my part. Let's give Alex a chance to straighten this out nicely. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Resurrecting this ancient thread: Has anyone found a utility like this that works with the current iMovie ('06)? Or can anyone recommend an easy (cheap is obviously good, too) way to convert NTSC PAL on MiniDV tapes, either with a Mac or stand-alone? Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I actually know the answer. We keep a running log of all the bans, so it's fairly easy to just read through and see how many times people have been banned. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In theory, yes, but the truth is that it's almost never happened, and it wouldn't just be greeny v. greeny. Any time that kind of thing were to come up, we'd kick it up to HH to make a decision. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Wish we had these prices again

That was how it was done when I did S/L in the 1990's, too. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
In my experience, the difference between vented and unvented canopies is far more noticeable on low freefalls than on static lines. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Probably, especially if it's cheap. If you don't pay much for it, you can always turn it around to recover most of your costs, or just keep it in your closet. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Amazon, PeacefulJefferey; Enough, already. Sharing PM's is pretty rude. I recommend you both try to just ignore each other (in PM's and in the forums). This sort of thing is incredibly immature, even for Speakers' Corner. I've banned both of you from this forum for 14 days. Let's not start this again. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Actually, this sounds like a pretty good idea. You don't even really need the trash bag--just pack up a SmartTARD and you're good to go. Lots of advantages to this setup: it's legal, you get to have solid skydiving gear as a backup, and you can still cut your BASE canopy away. You might have to get a new cutaway handle (with a handle) depending on your gear. I've also seen "unpacked" BASE rigs (i.e. just the harness with the 3 rings, and no container) that would be ideal for this (or for intentional BASE cutaways). I'd probably use a sail slider, and direct control, to help stage the deployment and make it nicer from an airplane. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
