Labor Day = First Weekend of September Memorial Day = Last Weekend of May When is the Budapest event? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Dude, it won't be junk free for long if you post it in the clear on the forums. A good way to post things like that if you want to avoid spam is to put "AT" instead of "@", or even "nospam" instead of "@". -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Nothing is set in stone yet, but I don't think so. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Understand that this thread isn't just about the original guy who posted about tagging sites with stickers. It will still be here in a year, when a different new jumper runs across it in the archives, and will (hopefully) serve to illustrate some points about philosophy and ethics, and demonstrate views and feelings from a range of jumpers. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Local SAR doesn't take donations. However, the Life Flight operation that runs critically injured BASE jumpers to the regional trauma center in Boise does. You can also get a membership, which in addition to being handy if your insurance won't pay up, is a good way to provide ongoing support. More information here. Memberships can be purchased here. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Reference the above posts by Space and myself. I am 100% certain (and I have the video to prove it) that Peter Gambs as made lower stowed jumps. It's funny how some folks are always claiming to be the "first" or the "best" or the most whatever without actually researching what has been done before. Hey, I've got a great new idea! I'm going to go ski off a cliff! No one has ever thought of that before! I'll be the only person in the world to ever do it! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Manager Guy: Let's call the cops and see if they can figure it out. Cop: Well, they have left me this nice clue. I'm going to dig around on the internet and see what it means. Cop: Hey, look at this. It turns out that's a logo from these weirdo's called "BASE Jumpers" who like to parachute off buildings. I'd say you've got a BASE jumper infestation. Better call an exterminator. If you set up video cameras we can get some evidence to go after them next time you see them. And they're already giving us a trail to follow. They're no better than gang members using graffiti to mark their turf. Let's get 'em! Manager Guy: Wow, I never heard of this "BASE" stuff before. We'll definitely tighten things up around here and see if we can nail those guys. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Different things attract different people. Some people love the big walls, some find their thing in the ultra low stuff. To each his own. Go your own way. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Sounds very good to me. And the price is right. I'd jump on it if I were you. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

well, i was sure - otherwise i wouldn't have post it. sorry if i was wrong. (was i wrong?) No. Your description was probably ok. In answer to your question, it's not really a tolerated site. People have been busted there, and it will happen again. Definitely keep it low profile and contact experienced locals. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Did you ask Jimmy and Marta? I wonder if anyone on their recent expedition brought a wingsuit. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Please read this announcement regarding multiple DZ.com accounts. I've banned this account from the BASE forum, and will ask Sangiro to disable it. Please PM me if you think this is an error. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Thanks! I have a crappy clip that I recorded off a TV with my digicamera (4.5Mb) of one of my Students, Peter the Rocket man testing a new set up. I could send it out to ya if you really want to see how low you can go. That clip is on SkydivingMovies.com, as part of a larger clip of mid-Euro BASE. I can't remember the name of the short vid, but it's the one where you see Dwain's huge, clunky watch in frame as he goes to pull off the bridge. It's got both clips of Peter (the snowboard and the motorcycle) that I've seen. Deadmanwalking: You really ought to check out what Peter did several years ago before you decide you've created a revolution by doing something he would probably think was hugely boring. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

That site is sensitive enough (since accidents shut down the access to the village below) that it's probably not a good place to be playing around with funky tricks. Much better to run down the road to ITW for that sort of monkey business. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Abbie came over for dinner last night and we discussed this and did a bit of planning. It looks like this is going to happen. We're guessing that it will be Labor Day weekend, rather than Memorial Day weekend, because it will give us a better shot at an all-day weather window. I'll post our draft of ideas when I get a chance. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

All, I've removed the name of the sticker maker (as well as, in one place, a competing sticker company) from this thread, at the request of that manufacturer. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Just to clarify: you were putting BASE stickers all over before you ever made a BASE jump? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

You're wrong. It's the attitude that burns the object. The same attitude that says "I'll damn well put a sticker on it if I please." The same attitude that says "I'll damn well drive a truck down this trail if I please." The same attitude that says "I'll damn well cut down this tree that's in the way if I please." The same attitude that says "I'll damn well do whatever I please." We haven't learned much in the last 25 years, have we? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It's interesting to see someone who's avatar is the ABP logo making this argument. I guess that the ABP's "Responsible Use" includes tagging exit points? I'll be sure to slap an ABP sticker over the survey marker on the big stone, the next time I'm there. I suggest you call these folks for a little remedial training. It's not just my ethics, or my etiquette, or even BASE ethics or BASE etiquette. It's general wilderness ethics, and wilderness etiquette. Viewed in a larger context, it's actually basic human etiquette. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'm pretty sure the term "huck" originated with skiing, and travelled from there to BASE, so I doubt that BASE jumpers can lay claim to it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Back when BR put 2 factory settings on, the "standard" that they had worked out was 4 inches between deep and shallow. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Don't worry. The mandatory competitors' drink-til-you-puke the night before will slow him down. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I'd start at the place you found by pulling the toggles down. Create a setting above and below that by 2 or 3 inches, and then come out to Twin for a weekend and make a dozen or so test jumps. Be warned that you cannot find the brake setting for a vented canopy simply by pulling the toggles down to find the stall point and going a bit below that. That used to work on unvented canopies, but on the vented ones it seems to find a point that results in undesirable opening backsurge a fair percentage of the time. If you have a chance to watch one of the ABA compilations, you can see a nice shot of Liv backsurging into a fire lookout, and understand why this isn't likely to be much fun. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
