At this point, there is no plan to have government officials keeping jumpers off the bridge. However, meetings with police and sheriff are ongoing. My honest guess is that this year, all you'll get is some other jumpers telling you not to jump (recall how during Dan's event there was a teenager standing at the end of the sidewalk telling people they couldn't go out there?), but with no actual authority, and no intent to physically restrain you. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Be aware that Miles is asking that no one who is not invited by him be allowed to jump the bridge during those days. So, if you come out to jump, be prepared to get some grief over it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I believe HydroGuy's point was that there was no BASE jumping involved in this discussion. A skydiver made a decision about his skydive, and the gear he wanted to use for that skydive, at a skydiving gathering. Arguments about BASE jumpers, BASE jumpers attitudes, etc, are simply not relevant to the underlying facts of the situation, because there is no BASE jumping in the original fact pattern. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In Twin Falls, we've got a propane station called "V-1", a CPA office called "Tilley and Associates," and, my personal favorite, a car tuning place called "The VKB Speed Shop." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think it's possible that you're stereotyping a little. Is it possible that some of the folks way up-thread who thought it was foolish to do this were actually BASE jumpers, and you assumed they weren't? Have a look, for example, at post #19 in this thread. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Are you basing that on experience jumping big cliffs at various altitudes? I haven't noticed an appreciable difference from similar sized (terminal) cliffs with landing areas at sea level and 4000' above sea level. I'm curious if your experience has been different. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

TVPB is the first person I know to have flown a wingsuit (of his own design, back before they hit the commercial market) off a cliff. He's got loads of applicable experience, to both BASE generally, and wingsuit BASE specifically. He does know what he's talking about, and he's seen enough carnage to care about trying to help people before they get hurt. You might also consider showing a touch more respect for one of the pioneers of the genre. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

BASE site confidentiality is about SAFETY, not legality. The primary reasoning is not that it's illegal, but that it's not safe to have people out there trying to jump with no training and/or the incorrect gear (that would be kind of like using BASE gear on a skydive). Oh, and for the record, Bill doesn't delete those. I do. In fact, he usually thinks I'm doing some serious overkill on that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

You can't be serious. Its not illegal to base jump... its illegal to trespass on to other peoples property. And you end up in the same cell and "Skydiving" gets the black eye. It is my relatively educated opinion that the majority of the world's BASE jumps are made legally. There are illegal skydives (for example, using BASE gear). There are legal BASE jumps. Why not focus on the legality, if that's what concerns you, rather than the type of parachuting? Honestly, this sounds like a skydiver (someone who jumps from aircraft) wanting to make an illegal skydive (jump from an aircraft). I'm not sure why so many people are forming an opinion about BASE jumpers (people who jump from fixed objects) based on this instance of a skydiver doing something while skydiving. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've done it. It's much less scary with a round, especially if you are over big water that you can definitely hit. The potential for an off heading opening, especially if the wind isn't quite high enough, on a square, is quite worrisome. Imagine a 180, with the canopy diving underneath you (and back toward you) as it pulls you off, and the resulting possibility of entanglement. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I believe it's the harness/container/reserve deployment system, and the reserve parachute (2 TSOs). I believe that all FAA regulated aircraft fall under the same rules as far as parachuting from them. Very. I think the easiest way would be to get your skydiving licenses in Germany, and then try to work in under the "foreign skydiver using equipment from home" exemptions. If I recall correctly, most of the BASE rigs on the market have passed the German equivalent of the TSO process. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
