ARGH! - please help, separation questions (yet again)
goose491 replied to Newbie's topic in Safety and Training
haha okay maybe not ALL variables... On a no wind day, I'm not looking for the 45 degrees, on a no wind day, I'm not all that confused about how to get my separation either... because the plane is cookin'. However, if you taught ONLY the 45 degree rule, then student who waited for the jumpers before them to deploy before exiting would certainly get the separation they needed... they catch a whole lot of flack but they'd certainly get their separation LOL. and what Billl originally said about the 45 rule would hold true "it makes people stick their head out the door, look for the previous group, and then scratch their head for a moment while they try to figure out what 45 degrees is." lol. Picky picky Bill, your speaking to a pilot but thanks. What you say is not incorrect, but it's something that is taught so as not to confuse whilst explaining the difference between airspeed and groundspeed. If what you are trying to do with a plane is move horizontally over the ground, and your headwind is the same as your airspeed, you are not going anywhere. Any pilot would understand that you are battling a headwind. I doensn't change that part of the argument. The plane has no groundspeed because Airspeed = Headwind. Once a jumper leaves the aircraft, the slipstream may act on him/her for a short while, this is where he/she is being (blown back) I suppose... but once clear of the hill, he/she is still in a body of air which is traveling backwards relative to dropship. Agreed. In an example where the plane is not traveling along the ground at all, then you are relying on vertical separation to do that. Your jumper is going to accellerate downwards at the same rate (9.81m/s/s) as if the plane did have a groundspeed, but is not going to travel backwards (relative to dropship) nearly as fast... thusly, it will take longer for him/her to ever hit that 45.... thusly, you will indeed have waited longer to exit then if the plane was cooking along the ground. I'm not disputing that counting will work (duh). I'm just saying that the 45 rule accomodates changes in all variables. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -

Funny how right after this, he goes onto "counting seconds... time equals distance" Well, not if "flying into a wind so great that the plane isn't moving," Not sure that you can discredit the 45 based on this. In the above example... the jumper is "initially blown back"... Hmmm I wonder if he means that the horizontal seperation would eventually cease to increase... 'cause it wouldn't. If your aircrafts headwind did equal its airspeed, then your aircrafts groundspeed would be zero. However the aircraft is still using POWER to fight the headwind... a jumper gets out and has no power. Thusly, he/she is "initially blown back" by the planes power but even after clearing the hill, the jumper is in a stable position in air which is moving backwards (relative to dropship) so is still creating horizontal separation. Edited to add: Furthermore, if "flying directly into a wind so great that the plane isn't moving", each jumper can count to 30 if they want... "but every jumper will (still) be getting out over exactly the same place on the ground, they will (still) be blown back along exactly the same path, and will (still) open at the same place with no separation at all" at 45 degrees, the jumper before you has been 'blown back' the exact same distance that he/she has traveled downwards... at this point, it is safe to get out. I was just teasing you. I'll try and find where the 45 degrees is... but bear in mind that this pic is taken from down and to the left of the flight path... If you had the same pic but right from the side (i.e. no extra dimension) it would be much easier. Finding 45 degrees (down and back) from your own eyes is a LOT easier than finding 45 degrees (down and back) from a plane flying in the air... You've got to figure out the angle at which you're looking at the plane first. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -

For a second, I thought we were going to get through a separation thread without seeing this falsehood. The 45 degree rule doesn't/can't work. I..... see hahahaa care to elaborate? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -

Hey Dan, Everything Bill said is gold.... One thing I could add is that I've just gotten used to the visual of the jumpers before me. That is to say, when they are at an approximate 45 degree (down and back relative to me in the plane), I start my count. It's real simple, once you've nailed that spot, it's like target-lock... that way, your separation time is ajusted for all factors. Works like a charm for me because I can use all my fingers to help me climb out and hold the aircraft instead of counting . lol. Just my $0.02CND My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Interesting parachute configuration, avoid if possible

Fly 'em both in with small corrections if they are not conflicting with eachother. If they are, dive the reserve ever so slightly to pull the main back and chop main. how'd I do? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Dude, That ROCKED!!! Very cool man, congrats Nick My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

BOOBIES!!! sorry, I had to go for the hijack! funny joke. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

BOOBIES!!! Wait Billvon, I have a question. What are the odds of me breaking my ankle if I drink three cups prior to playing Russian Roulette whilst skydiving and haven't yet lost my marbles in over 25,000 jumps? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Packing Video Suggestions Needed
goose491 replied to dzgirl's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Slow motion footage of canopies opening! Get real good opening footage and break it down for the viewer... Understanding the "mess" of fabric and lines is made so much easier when you understand the dynamics of deployment and opening. Cool if, once you've taught how to pack, you could explain "Do this to slow the openning... Do this to speed up the openning." and then show slow-motion footage of the different openings. i.e. "See how rolling the tail gives you a few more moments before the tail whips back exposing the rest?" Helmet...Would you use either of these???

I don't like the looks of the tops of those guys... seems like a good place for a line to grab hold and not let go. Probably to hold ski-goggles? If you could shave 'em, you could use 'em. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Woa! That's like saying who do you love more... Mom or Dad? lol, I've not voted. Both KICKASS! nick My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Wow, I can't beleive snopes even touched that one makes you wonder. I thought it was quite funny... I wonder if ol' Peek-a-boo truly considers herself "Plagued" by these jokes. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

That's not necessarily true... I've seen that one since the attack. I remember thinking "Thank goodness! At least Mr. Groening isn't so naive as to pretend the towers never existed" My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Tough.... tough to decide. I'd have to go with the "Guatemalan insanity pepper" episode. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Ha-Ha!!! That was great! Made my morning! haha Hey, who can I send a 1.24 MB wmv file to upload and post here? (Stupid geocities wont accept this type of file) -or can I convert it to MPEG somehow? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Well, I guess you'd just have to keep it as daddy's little secret then I lean more towards the sensless beating... I'm pretty surprised the molester ratted him out while in the hospital. It must have landed him back in some trouble for touchin' the kid. It shows but one thing: The molester does not give a rats ass if he gets caught and thinks nothing of the repercussions. So frustrating it must be... the guy clearly does not deserve even the smallest of jail cells. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

I'm a lover, not a fighter. Bear that in mind whilst you read the following: I'm all for revenge in a case like this. If a person molested my kid (though I haven't any), I'd have no interest in calling the cops knowing he/she has already served a sentence or two for just this sorta thing. It's obvious that the system does not work for him... having already spit him out twice, and he's still touching the young. IMHO the fathers mistake was hospitalising the f*ck... where he could explain what happened. The molester should have gotten one of two things from the kids father: 1) Beaten to a certain degree which did not require hospitalisation 2) A meeting with his maker Of course, option 2 is harder for the father to pull off without a trace back to himself. Naw, you just land on your feet and let the pyramid fall around you... there's enough room to stand inside that thing. hehe. Honnestly though, I would probably think about jumping from it at about 10 feet above the ground or something like that If I had to use one... might as well, it's not like you're going to get a flare out of it or anything. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Huh? I mean excuse me? Get over what? my post commends him for having delt personaly with the person he was upset with and asks to see the vid. I'm confused as to what exactly I am to 'get over'. I didn't have to walk anywhere... I've never jumped in the dessert (that would be kinda sticky and sweet)... I've never jumped in the desert either My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!
