  1. To be honest, I would rather read about it being interlaced than go ahead and start exploring the data my self. So, if you could point out a source that claims the stream is interlaced, I would very much apprechiate it.. Thanks!
  2. Cool.. Im sure thats how it can be done. The question is, how is it done with the 5DmarkII ? You keep saying its done by interlacing, and no where else I can find no reference to any interlacing. Other websites suggest the decoding is done by temporal compression. Could you maby point out the sources that suggest the stream is interlaced ? Thanks!
  3. Thanks ! I think I understand the basic idea now. For some reason I didnt notice earlier that you responded to this question. (better late than never) This explanation was very helpfull. But this isnt really interlaced then now is it ? Interlacing is something different This is just a way of "packing", by not repeating the same data in every frame. When I think about it with logically it isnt really a big workload to later on to "unpack" this data again so that each and every frame consists the full data. Also logically this would mean the filesize is larger when the picture is moving a lot, since less of the data can be copied from the 1st or 15th frame. And someone who has the camera just confirmed that he made a test about it. He filmed 20 seconds of stationary subject and 20 seconds of moving subject. The filesizes were 33,8 MB and 42,8 MB (not so big difference since he was filming a piece of paper with black stripes on it.)
  4. I also think theres no need for any armoring. I might use one of these if someone gave me one, but honestly I dont feel I need one bad enough so that I should order one. On the other hand it would protect the camera and the lens from moisture, if you are flying through a wet cloud. On the otherhand I do like to be able to acces the camera functions without taking such a cover off all the time. For now I just leave the camera on the ground (or on the plane) if theres a possibility of flying through a rain cloud in freefall..
  5. I do think it is correct indeed. Someone tested the G10 sync speeds here : http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157607887055949 I guess you are aware that the more powerfull settings you have the more time the light of the flash is emitted. The brightness of the light moreless remains the same. Therefore there are limitations of what poweroutput you may use with what electronical shutter also, since some of the light emitted is going to "waste" anyway. I guess it has something to do with the cameras ability to cordinate the timing with the flash efficiently also. So, if I read that list correct, using half power with SB800 would mean you would need to shoot 1/500 in order to use the full potential of that flashpower. Any faster than that, you start loosing flash power. That is why I said: you couldnt use those FAST syncspeeds in skydiving where more power is needed from the flash. Yes I know and it is one of the few cameras where they were experimenting with the electronic shutter. They dont offer it anymore in later models. It obviously needs more development before it is to be offered again in pro-sumer cameras.. There just isnt any modern DSLR´s out there (not to my knowledge) with electronical shutters. Most of them are compact cameras. Thats why I said I wouldnt use electronical shutters. You are right, and that is why I said there are some limitations with the high speed sync. Yes. That is true. PW wont allow HSS or FP.
  6. while some cameras with electronical shutter have faster sync speed, they have lots of trade offs.. And actually I think the sync speed of the two mentioned electronic shutter cameras vary depending on the poweroutput of the flash so you couldnt use those FAST syncspeeds in skydiving where more power is needed from the flash. (correct me if Im mistaken) Personally woulndt use electronical shutters. (not before they are developed enough) Leaf shutters would be a whole different thing though, but they cost a lot of $$$$ if you want to shoot digital. 1/200 speed will yield some motion blur from clothes that are flapping, but other than that It is enough. If the jump is done at more low light conditions, you could easilly use much slower shutter speed also, The flash would stop the movement anyway.. And ofcourse you can use high speed sync systems too, though they also have some limitations..
  7. Ok. I play also I just made this photo just for the sake of learning new things in PS and to post it here after I saw this thread (it was shot around new years though) Obviously I didnt shoot it with real tilt-shift lens, but faked it in PS. Regarding to what was said about vignetting, I like vignetting very much sometimes. I actually added quite a bit of vignetting to my photo. I think its a nice effect sometimes. I was also playing with the slave flash idea sometime ago. Would be cool to try sometimes. There is also a thread about the issue here EDIT: oh.. and my post was also very much of topic in terms of the black limbo effect.
  8. The term "pro photographer" is quite widespread. Think about news photographers. They most often shoot JPG. Why ? Because they have enough experience to expose the photo correctly anyway and their priority is to have the photo done fast so they may go shoot more and make more money. Ultimately their objective is journalistic, not photographic. On the otherhand you may compare him to a photographer that works in a studio. He will most definetly work RAW. His priority is make quality, not quantity. I apply the same rule in skydiving: Tandems: JPG More ambitious work: RAW

All these rumours. I was told this was the case earlier, but at the time they announced they are starting the building process, it was said that the problem with the electric grid is solved. Who knows ? mañana, mañana...
  10. There are actually lenses with a larger aperture than f/1. At least f/0.7 lenses have been made. I believe the theoretical limit is f/0.5 I dont. There is lots of settings I never use. For example I dont use Larger ISO than 400 in skydiving enviroment. (but ofcourse it might change if I had a better camera) I like the light in the lens hood picture. Its a nice picture, but personally I might hide the visible border with the white background and the platform where the hood is at. The other one is a bit too dark for my taste.. BTW. What is that font you use for your signature ? Its really nice !
  11. My opinion on the ISO value is that it largely depends on the equipment you use. On my 400D the image becomes way too noisy for my taste when using ISO 400. Personally I only use ISO 100-200. Allthough Im sure if I had a better camera I might think different. The thing is that normally you dont really NEED to use as fast shutter speeds as 1/800. IMO 1/400 does the job well enough and the added benefit of 1/800 is not worth compromising the image quality. Also not many lenses perform best at f/11 either. I see no reason to compromise the picture quality for shooting at f/11 either. For example canon 10-22 is sharpest at f/5.6 If there isnt enough light I use a flash.
  12. Hello Vadimus! Im a bit confused about all the tunnels being built in moscow now. Will there soon be three tunnels ? 1. Freezone moscow 12ft 2. Freezone moscow 16.5ft 3. aerotruba 13.5ft I hope to see you again somewhere in the sky or in the tunnel
  13. Ah. ok. Im confused, what does this mean exactly ? How can it be progressive but interlaced at the same time ? Can you maby explain this so that the average person (me) also understands what this means? Thanks!
  14. Why would you need to de-interlace ? The camera shoots progressive..
  15. The way I see it, no one can have "all the answers about camera flying" before they even start doing it. Thats absurd IMO. We learn new things all the time. No one is born with all the answers. IMO asking advice about camera suit, does not necessarily mean the OP is not ready to start learning these things. Knowing everything and being ready to start learning are two different things. In fact I do think it suggests a enthusiastic attitude that hes finding out answers to these questions in early stage. I understand what you are saying. However, I still think the DZO´s and TI´s have better judgement over ones ability compared to someone judging the matter over internet. Ofcourse it is possible that even they might make bad calls on these issues. I still wouldnt question their judgement before I have personally seen something more concretic than just a profile in DZ.com.
  16. I wonder why people seem to think that merely looking at someones profile over the internet they are more qualified to judge someones skill level for activity X, than those (in this case TI´s and DZO´s) who know the person and have seen him fly. This debate just goes on and on in here. This is truly classic. Let the Insturctors and other mentors at the DZ decide who is capable of doing what. They are the only ones who have the necessary info for making these decisions..
  17. Like phree said, the next thing you need to know is if your graphic card supports 1920 x 1080 resolution..
  18. No, I am not a tandem instructor. I guess you are, and therefore it qualifys you to tell me I am unsafe. Thanks for that
  19. IMO with a cropped sensor 10mm is great for tandems since you can get nice "on the door" photos with it. Actually I think 8mm might work even better, but for all the other shots it would bee maby too wide in my opinion. I dont think you can get these pictures with the 15mm. In the air the focal lenght doesnt matter so much since you can always choose the distance you like to shoot from. Personally I like to dock on the students for a while and this close the 15mm FOV is too narrow with the 1.6 crop factor. I think you might get very nice results with for example a 50mm and very large aperture, but framing would be more difficult and exit shots might be very difficult to nail nicely. "On the door" photos would be impossible. The bokeh would be very nice though. What I do a lot of times is that I shoot 10mm in the beginning and later on a may set it to 22mm in freefall and shoot on my back from a slightly further away. Also landing shots work better @22mm. If I was shooting FF I would definetly get the 15mm though.. EDIT: forgot to add that I definetly dont think Im putting anyone at risk when flying at docking distance and shooting with the 10mm. I dont know where velocityphoto gets this idea from..
  20. On the contrary. Look at this thread. Im quite sure the OP and others reading have learned from this thread. Something that might not had happened if "this advice" was given 1on1 in real life.
  21. Is that for real ? Why not just open the buckle and fold it away ?
  22. Thanks guys! Yes. Full manual. I used 1/200 shutter and 1/2 power on my 430EX. I only changed ISO between 100-200 and f number between 5.0-6.3 depending on the amount of natural light.
  23. Some sequentials a few days ago
  24. I think learning photography overall is vital for learning any specific photography like skydiving photography. I personally dont read much traditional photography magazines. I do read some internet forums regularly and I like to talk/learn about photography from some of my friends who do it professionally. Nowadays I find my self "analyzing" all kind of photos I may encounter; advertisments on the street, journalistic photos on the newspapers, etc etc. I try to think how this photo was created and what are negative and positive things about it. IMO it does drive you forwards with your own work too..
  25. Maby the email quota size could be made a little bit larger. I guess at the moment its only a few MB. I understand back in the day it was expensive to hand out more than a few MB´s of quota for free, but nowadays it isnt nearly as expensive.. I hate cleaning it everyday ...
