  1. This I disagree most def.
  2. are you sure the canon HSS isnt compatible with Sony alphas ? According to the specs the alpha has High speed sync function. But it could be it only works with sony flashes.. Anyways, I definetly agree with you. With the 580 you are paying for a lot of features you dont really need in freefall, such as the Master via IR...
  3. Personally I dont know much about the differences between the G10 and G11. What phree said could be true.. My point was that a compact such as the g10 is the best choice. Not necessarily exactly that model. If you truly want some High IQ with low weight, you need to look at some other things like the leica X1 (286grams) or the Leica m9 (585grams) But these cameras go far beyond what is reasonable for shooting tandems.. A G10 will do just perfect.
  4. Ok thanks for the info. I heard some ppl have been using those for video. I always thought they were kind of weak compared to a flash and only contribute some light when shot from a close distance or inside the plane. Maby they are not as bad as I thought ?
  5. You mean a continuous light source vs. flash ? Basically this is the only realistic option for freefall in terms of continuous light sources. About flashes, for example Nikon SB 26 is good value. (maby aroung 90 bucks.) try ebay or something.. You wont need to worry about the pins matching up the hot shoe of the camera. You wouldnt want to wear the flash in the hot shoe anyway The more expensive Flashguns offer ETTL and some other functions, but you wont really need them in freefall IMO. Couple of features you should look for: -High speed sync (canon) or FP (nikon) is a bonus if you dont want to only use the Sync speed of the camera. -The faster the recycle time the better. (however when compairing statistics among different flashguns remember that the more powerfull ones take longer to recycle untill full power simply because they need to charge more power. Therefore you cannot directly compare just the seconds to 1/1) Also the possibility of using external battery pack is a bonus. -Decent amount of power (guide number)
  6. Agreed, a compact such as the G10 definetly has the best image quality/weight ratio.
  7. So will this be the 4th wind tunnel in moscow ? 1. freezone 12ft 2.bodyflight 14,5ft 3.freezone 16.5ft 4.aerotruba ?
  8. CX-100 slo-mo (not my video) To be honest, IMO the type of "slow down and rewind again" type of routine I see on some tandemvideos doesnt look very professional. Personally I prefer not to use any in-camera "special effects" at all...
  9. Capture speed is pretty slow.. On the otherhand 1/800sec flash sync is pretty usefull in skydive photography. Interesting setup. Thanks for sharing !
  10. 1Dm4 : 1180g 5Dm2: 810g 7D : 820g So the 1dm4 is less than 360 grams heavier. Not really an issue at all. At the moment I have no issues with weight when I have 400D + 10-22 + 430EX + Sony PC120 + bonehead optik. If I would replace the 400D -> 1Dm4 Im certain I would have no problems. Furthermore If I also changed that heavy PC120 to a cx100 I would actually reduce the total weight of my helmet with about 250 grams. So I could actually have two CX100´s and a 1Dm4 and it would weigh the same that my set up does now... If I had an FTP or similar I could easilly mount two 1D bodies. (only if I had the money) Ofcourse your canopy choice is very important in this discussion also. (I fly an XF2) For freefall I would prefer a FF sensor. 2nd coice would be the APS-C. APS-H is very limited with wide angle optics. It is designed for longer focal lengths. The only thing on APS-C over FF is the 8mm fisheye focal length on APS-C. Im not sure if there is as wide selection of lenses on the comparable focal length on the FF selection of lenses..
  11. Why not for skydiving ? I would love to have one. The only thing I dislike is the APS-H sensor size, which isnt all that good with wide angle photography. (very big minus considering skydive photography)
  12. One thing is for sure though: People sure like to point fingers on others over the internet. For the OP it wasnt enough that this person had been penalized by the DZ. Furhtermore he MUST know his name and he MUST publish it here so that everyone may condemn his actions...
  13. Personally I think the key question is the recovery arc of the canopy you are flying. If the canopy has a long recovery arc you might need to use rears for a more effective recovery that transalates the vertical speed to horisontal in an effective way. But if the canopy has a rather short recovery (in other words no additional input for a smooth recovery is needed) then IMO there really isnt any real need for rears.. IMO a lot of people use rears even if they dont benefit them really / makes no difference for them.. I have found the XF2 109 recovery arc short and IMO there is no need for rears at all. (WL 1.8ish) This is the way I see it, but Im naturally receptive for discussion about this...
  14. Agreed. I get around 75km/h with a 90. With a good 270 the speeds are around somewhere around 115km/h to 120km/h (measured with VISO) I think at full flight I exeed 10% even when flying straight in...
  15. Skill for sure, Nice optics for shure also. BUT even the best modern equipment has its limitations when shooting relatively small objects travelling at 120mph. Some situations are very challenging even for the pro with the gear. Im guessing Canon 500mm + maby 70-200mm
  16. Nice work ! Did you have a lot of issues with focusing ? (I mean, how large percentage did you manage to focus well?) I would imagine that at least those flyby shots are pretty damn hard nail in sharp focus. Always interested to hear any other experiences/tips concerning this type of photography..
  17. Those few times I have jumped without a box on a bad weather I have had issues with condensation and the camera stops working. I have jumped much worse conditions with a box and had no problems. Sure it doesnt prevent fogging, but prevents the camera shutting down/giving error msg...
  18. Personally I cant get a good speed even with a 270. I get my pro track whining about 50% of time with 270 but at larger turns it yells 100%.
  19. No real post processing. He says he bumped up the contrast and saturation a little in the camera. So the picture should be as it comes from the camera. Lenses were Canon 10-22 f/3.5-4.0 Canon 50mm f/1.4 Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 He says he uses Glidetrack dolly for some shots. On the other hand a lot was shot hand held.
  20. Some amazing videos shot with the 7d: http://www.vimeo.com/6938509 http://www.vimeo.com/6860546
  21. Why not just try it ? You might want to get your self an additional IR-light source for better light.. something like this : http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/01/Sima%20IR%20Add%20On%20GI.jpg
  22. yes this is how I see it. Nowhere in this i way that "wind conditions impact the flight harasteristics of a canopy" like you interpreted. It is that the wind conditions impact on the ground speed of the canopy, not the flight charasteristics of the canopy. What was said about the target fixation, I basically agree. But this is another topic IMO and isnt exatcly relevant with the question of how the wind component affects the visual of the recovery..
