Forming professional skydiving instructors organization?
jimjumper replied to proskydiverorg's topic in Instructors
Because as Professional's when we state an opinion or position in an open forum it's important that we stand behind what we say and have the credibility to back it up. -
Used to jump an SOS system. If you ever do, you quickly learn that there are people who have no idea how to do pin checks on equipment different than their own. I've actually been grabbed by the harness and dragged back inside from floating because the person couldn't see my cutaway handle. A lot of jumpers have no idea how to do a proper pin check or even what they are looking at!

longste period and still activ jumping skydiver ?
jimjumper replied to tbr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Maybe, Bob Sinclair? Don't know if h's still jumping. -
Both! I had one tandem look out the window at about 8K and turn to me and say "Don't bother hooking me up! I'm not going!". I also had an AFF student on check-in for exit ask if she could try again if she rode the plane down. Not my only refusals, just the ones that stand out. My opinion, both tandem and AFF, No means No!

I finally found my Poynter's manual. Check page 239 for a full description. Most rounds were converted to full stow diapers back in the 80's but I'm sure some half-stows are still out there.
-
I bought my first when I had 7 jumps (SL program). It had a 27' Russian PC and a 24' flat non steerable reserve. Novices weren't allowed to jump a square till they had 50 jumps. I paid $300 for it and got $200 trade-in when I bought a heavyweight Cloud in a Wonderhog and put the reserve in it.

That wasn't what I tried to say. The Strong Lopo can be packed reliably with either full stow or half stow diaper but each type of diaper needs to be packed as designed.
-
Is it diaper deployed? If so make sure you verify that it's either a full stow or half stow diaper. If you stow all the lines at once in a half stow diaper you greatly increase the chance of a line-over. It happened to mine and the line-over burned big holes all over the canopy. Fortunately, I wasn't under it (6' 230lbs). I had loaned to a 130lb girl and even at that weight she injured her back. The canopy was destroyed!

Where are all the Strong-rated TI's when you need them

I posted just before I read this post for the very reason you noted. I like Strong tandem rigs and have no problem saying so! -
Strong DHT - design flaws, safety hazards, maitenance hazards
jimjumper replied to Zahry's topic in Gear and Rigging
I've tried to not post to this thread but can't resist any longer. I went out this weekend and did tandems using Strong rigs and came away totally unscathed! Just like I have for most weeks of the last 12 years! I will go on record as being very happy with the safety and design of Strong rigs both main and reserves. There isn't a rig being made that doesn't have design features that a person could argue are a safety hazard. And yes, that includes the annoited Sigma even with the Skyhook. The DHT has been in service for many years and has a proven track record as reliable and safe. As Tom pointed out already, most tandem incidents are pilot error and that is confirmed by most manufactuers of tandem equipment. In the incident noted in this thread the equipment was improperly packed, poorly maintained, over-aged, using an unauthorized smaller main, and inspected and jumped by someone uncertified on the rig. To accuse Strong of safety issues and design flaws after the fact is blatantly unjust. I hope Tom and Strong continue to refute this nonsense and I'll hope to be jumping their rigs again this weekend. -
Rigging Innovations used to have an emergency rig that had an original silk canopy they used for rigger training. I have it listed in my rigger log as an "Army Back, 24' Silk Canopy, made by Irvin". Don't know if they still have it or not, but Sandy isn't known for throwing things away. It is probably a continuous lines canopy but i packed it in '98 so i don't remember.

Kirk and his mother Dana Handbury are still around here in SoCal. She got recurrent about 2 years ago just after Kirk got a service dog from the organization (Canine Companions for Independence)my wife and I are involved with. We haven't seen her recently but if you do a search on this forum there is lot of information on the jump and the people involved.

I think I finally figured out how to post photo's so lets see! This picture was taken over Cal City about late '88 or early '99. Anybody see themselves or someone they know? I will post later with a group shot in front of the Otter.

I trained him as part of a group of eight. The training included a briefing of the entire jump including arch training on a trampoline and an exit and arch review before boarding the plane plus a verbal review after hook-up before exit! The others in the group were fine. We get a few gangbangers that try to outdo each other once in a while including flashing gang sign for the video!

The one guy that kept trying to grab his toes! After we opened I asked what he had been trying to do and he told me " that he want'd to go head down real fast, just like the James Bond movie I saw last week!"

Bob Sinclair? Wouldn't be his first pull-off!

how tall was Georgia 'Tiny' Broadwick?
jimjumper replied to SivaGanesha's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
My wife met her at Elsinore in the late seventies and believes she was about 4' 10' or so. That's probably pretty close bsaed on the photo's and personal accounts. -

She would also be entitled to a "reasonable fee?" for professional removal and may also be entitled to fees for for her personal time and expense. The old adage of catching more flies with honey than vinegar might apply here. Famer McNasty's are usually created and then nurtured by the very people that made them! -
How many people have 10 000 jumps or more?
jimjumper replied to nigel99's topic in Safety and Training
Both Jim Wallace and his wife Gail have over 10K. Jim was just awarded his 20K award and they both log all their jumps. Between the 2 of them they have over a 40 year library of logbooks! -
Jim Wallace did one on Saturday. He's the man when it comes to handicapped tandems! You can contact him at his website www.jimwallaceskydiving .com.

Excellent! A rigging tip that I hadn't heard or thought of. I'll give it a try next repack. Thanks!

The Warthog photo doesn't have much of a weapons load. This is one fully loaded!

How old is old? KAP's, Sentinels, FXC"s, or just dead Cypres units?

They had 2 at the '84 Herd Boogie. Strange door but they climbed well and because of it's cargo oriented center of gravity, you could stretch out and really be comfy.

"Parachutist" versus "Skydiving" Magazines
jimjumper replied to JohnRich's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've gotten both for the last 20+ years. If the goal is to save trees, Skydiving should quit with the renewal notices. I get them every 2-3 months no matter how long I still have on the subscription. Of course if the subscription expiration was on the address label (it's not) I'd be able to tell when it was expiring.
