  1. Jim Wallace (as noted earlier) does it as a 2 day course. He includes instruction on everything on the card and provides the smoke, flags, and banners. He also provides detailed instruction on filing the FAA paperwork and observes the jumps. He charges $300 for the whole course.
  2. I doubt you'll get enough respose from an on-line survey to get any significant results. I did one for D. Fishman in 1985 and a second for Cal State Northridge University in 1988 for L.M. Walker-Finney and about every year someone with an interst in skydiving thinks it would be a grat idea for a thesis. The Cal State study cited studies by Deci (1975), Lefcourt (1976), Phares (1976), and Rotter (1966 and 1972) so these studies are nothing new. It might be more revealing for someone to research all the studies that have already been done with an aim towards combining all the research and surveys into something comprehensive.
  3. I guess that means we won't be taking anymore handicapped students?
  4. Actually he was asked to retire after a whole lot of expensive stuff that he signed for and authorized use of ended up missing! He was a whole lot better as a Seal than he was at logistics. He also got the Navy sued when he kidnapped the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station civilain head of security at his home as a way to gain access to the base during an excercise. The civilian signed employment waivers so he couldn't sue but after waving guns in his wife's face at her civilian home, she sued and got a whole pile of money!
  5. If you find Zappa interesting, he also scouted out and got signed a number of really bizarre bands and individuals. Try the Fugs (Live at the Filmore East is my favorite), Ed Sanders (solo Fugs member), Wild Man Fischer, the New York Dolls, and Captain Beefheart. Not really great rock and roll but damn it's entertaining!
  6. I've found that I prefer wearing gloves but for students I only have them wear gloves when it's cold enough to lose the tactile feel of fingers in freefall. If it's cold enough for that, losing the feel from the cold or wearing gloves is about the same. I wear gloves for a number of reasons. Hand abrasion protection on landings. Hand protection from anything sharp or snagging in or on the airpalne. Warmth. I also wear rings when jumping and it covers them and prevents them catching on anything or losing them. I would recommend that if you wear gloves, wear them all the time so the "feel" doesn't change much.
  7. Riggerrob's tip for handles checks was to roll the hand when doing them so it looks like you are getting a shot of the trailing drogue. In all of the hand-cams I've done you will see a complete handles check because I'd get fired if I didn't! The loss of shot to do a handles check is pretty small compared to the amount of overall footage.
  8. In the local area we have a couple of balloon operations that by neccesity land on private property on a regular basis. They have been sued for endangering horses and also for destroying citrus crops and equipment and it has got to the point where the operators have maps of specific properties they won't land at. It's cost them a good amount in legal fees and money in damage claims. I think that at least attempting to fix the problem is going to help a lot when the time comes when you get sued and if you keep landing on his property I think that time will come sooner or later.
  9. I may not be phrasing this perfectly but I'll try. Be able to identify main and reserve container and canopy components for functional compatibility and size. How often do you see rigs (especially mains) come in with parts that have been replaced by a well meaning rigger but not the correct part or the wrong size or type? I don't mean they need to know off the top of their head but they should be able to reference/identify what is acceptable and not.
  10. Sounds like a CH-53! My favorite jumpship!
  11. They had 2 at the '84 Herd boogie. They managed to bang them together parking them so only one actually flew at the boogie. Actually had pilots that wore their uniforms while flying jumpers! If I recall the doors on the Otters were a little wider so they were more the favorite at the boogie.
  12. I just had a student yesterday ask me if it was OK to do his own HandCam. When I hesitated, he showed me his I-Phone setup. It strapped to his wrist and with it set videoing sideways it had a pretty decent wide angle view. It also had a thin protective cover so he was able to use all the touch features without taking it out of the case. After the standard camera warning about not being responsible if it got lost, I let him use it. It came out as good or better than most HandCam stuff and he shot all the ground footage and airplane footage he wanted. He was also able to use it under canopy. I still did regular HandCam but just supplied the raw footage so he could edit it all the way he liked. Sometimes students think outside the box!
  13. I'm more curious than anything. On a lot of rigs it's the little details that make the difference between a good rig and a grat rig. i like anything that works well!
  14. Rob, did you happen to notice if the main and secondary handles had a system for retaining the ripcords? We ended up using a bungee system to keep our students from dropping them but the bngee has to be maintained and we only use them with the student ripcord location.
  15. Ed was a great guy and will be sorely missed. I got to jump with Ed when he was stationed in the Phillipines as head of Base Security at Subic Bay in '85. In addition to Ed some of the familiar names jumping there were G.D. Williams (deceased) and Mike Mangold. Jumping there required some dedication. My logbook shows me doing a 2-way with him on 8 Dec 85 from the flying clubs 182. Good Times!
  16. I remember hearing this story in the "Lounge" at Lakewood one night in '83. I also seem to recall a story about Fang demonstrating a prowess at snorting raw oysters too! Joey, I still have the first square I owned and bought from you. It's a Delta Cloud custom made from 1.1 material that Max Meinsopust had specially made to do CRW with. It's as big as a tandem and it's in a Warp III container that you also sold me. It's been a while since I jumped it!
  17. It was a while ago but I spent 2 years in Misawa and 2 in Okinawa. Misawa was too far away from any dropzone but Okinawa had an MWR club and we got a Marine helicopter once a month for 4 hours. Lot's of fun jumping a helo for free!
  18. I heard a wild rumour last week that a couple of guys have secured permission to do military freefall training there. I don't know if it's a U.S. or foreign military operation.
  19. I too think that the Class 3 requirement is foolish and was going to post about the same points you have but your doing a great job without me. +1!
  20. That's the guy! But, I would have to say that Van Sr. had pretty good reason to dislike him!! Also, I may have been incorrect in stating the new hanger was up. When we moved out of the carpet factory we actually spent some time in the small hanger in front of the big hanger while the big hanger was being constructed. Since I went to Japan for 2 years after the photo was taken, and I left before it's completion, I'm pretty sure it wasn't in use yet. After moving into the big hanger the small hanger was used a gear store for a while.
  21. Not bad! I just saw Dave Deis a couple of months ago at Perris and that is Linda Wisenhunt. I haven't heard about her in a long time. Of the other 3 none are in the photo although Jay was jumping at Cal City around this time. The guy flippin the bird is Dennis Huff and the other female is named Julie although I can't remember her last name. Mike Mangold would know and he is standing next to her on her left. My logbook notes say that this was Dave Harder's 200th jump and Dave LeClerq's 500th and they are both in the photo. I don't have a name for the pilot though! If anybody knows let me know. This picture would have been taken just after moving to the big hanger. You can just see the old office and packing building behind the Otter that we shared with a carpet making company before Van built the hanger that everybody remembers.
  22. Fnd this while looking for another picture. Recognize anybody? Photo was taken by Leigh Webb Oct. 88.
  23. Hey Bill! I just checked with Cathy (sitting next to me!) and she say's she only did 49! Jerry Girdler also did a bunch. Cathy says he had more than her but doesn't know the exact number. She quit jumping after having back surgery (not jumping related) and made the decision to not jump anymore. She has about 1100 total jumps and still occasionally does a tandem with me. Cath says "Hi Bill!"
