Steve's (Landmissle) cutaway at 70 jumps was as a result of self-induced line twists at 1800'. He was flying in deep brakes waiting for the landing pattern to clear. Then instead of going back to full flight before making a turn he buried a toggle. He chopped within seconds as he was spinning back to earth. From what I understand, he was flying the canopy close to the stall point. When he initiated the turn he stalled one side of the canopy, which spun it around on itself. Several instructors referred to it as "helicoptering" Whatever it's called, it was damn scary to watch! Perhaps this is similar to what happened in the situation you witnessed? Karen

Hi, Michele! What a great question! Among the many people I respect in this sport, there is one in particular that I thought of immediately when I read your post. I think my respect for him evolved in phases: When I met him the first time I stepped foot on a DZ - I respected him because he was The Instructor. He automatically had my respect because of his position of authority. When my husband got hurt during AFF L3 - I respected him for his compassion. When I worried incessantly throughout my student levels - I respected him for his ability to listen and to teach and to make me laugh at myself (especially when I did funny things in the air that didn't seem so funny when it was happening) When he takes time out of an extremely busy day to jump with me now, I respect his ability in the air & under canopy. When I talk to him after jumping is over for the day, over dinner, over a beer, I respect him as a friend. Blue skies, Karen

lol! do you mean Landmissle? what's up with that? I finally start sitflying on pretty much every jump, finally get to the point where I'm not too scary to sit with, and you go and flop back to your belly on me and start wearing grippies again!! Seriously, really looking forward to seeing you! And any kind of jump we do (hopefully more than one!) will be wonderful!! Karen
-
Hey, Lummy! Guess what? I sorta, kinda, almost, know how to sitfly now! Maybe we can get together for a jump at the boogie..it's been too long since I've been in the air with ya! Blue ones, Karen

Hey, all - Steve & I will be there on Fri - Sun! Looking forward to jumping with anyone who wants to

Chest strap save on load, How common is this?

I was there that day! I was gearing up right near where you were standing and I heard him ask you if you were ready to skydive right before he yanked that thing off of you! I have to tell you, that made such an impression on me as well. It can happen to anyone as soon as we let our guard down. Blue skies, Karen -
As Michele mentioned, we're driving down there on Friday!! So far we're planning on being at the DZ sometime Sat morning and staying all week. We completed all the waiver/video stuff last Jan on our first trip to Perris, so I imagine we won't have to spend time doing it again and can just get to the jumpin'!

To Chute - I am truly sorry for the tragic loss of your friend. Please know that I am thinking of you & Kat's friends and family and wish you all the best. She seemed like a vibrant young woman, and I'm sure she will be missed To Michele - your post is, as usual, eloquent & timely...and one with which I agree. To Catfishhunter - I think I understand a little of where you are coming from, having had my father-in-law take his own life 5 years ago...and it definitely sounds like you have been through quite a bit in your life. But, your grotesque comments about the physical state of a suicide seem misplaced on a thread about the loss of someone's friend & loved one. I would have hoped that, having been in that terrible state of despair yourself, you might be able to provide Kat's friends & family with some encouragement instead. Blue skies, Karen

I've been married 19 years to a wonderful man that I had only known for 6 months before we committed our lives to each other (he was 19, I was 20). It was not love at first sight though...the "true love" part took time! I do believe you can feel connected to a person immediately upon meeting them, but to really be in love with them, to be willing (& wanting!) to stay together through the good, bad, & the seriously ugly parts of life..all that takes more than just a moment of connection. Blue skies, Karen

Hi, Lummy!! hehehe, we DO seem to only see each other at boogies, don't we!!? Are you going to do a sitfly jump with us again? Last time was really fun! And I think I might even be better now...it's actually starting to look like a sitfly instead of a butt-fly Been mostly doing belly jumps though, so maybe we can get a few of those in too?? See you soon! Blue ones, Karen -

Hey, SkyOCiel! I will be at the boogie this weekend! Hubby & I are planning on going up starting Saturday...probably come home each day (90 minutes away) 'cause we have doggies at home to take care of. Do you do belly or freefly? I prefer mostly RW, but my honey is pretty good at both RW & sitflying. I hope we can meet you there this weekend! And if you want to jump with us, well that's all the better! -
Hey, Michelle! My mom is in the exact same situation...except this is her 50th reunion! She's never to been to one of 'em yet, as far as I know. But I actually think she's going to this one...one of her classmates called her, had a nice long chat, and I think convinced her to go. From what you've said, I wouldn't personally put the time and effort into going. Blue skies, Karen

I'm a Ned! Cute quiz, Val (may I call you Val?

It's ok for your hubby to be disappointed in you on some things, Freebird....like getting a B instead of an A on an exam, or changing your haircolor to one they don't prefer. In a close relationship, you don't always have to like everything the other person does and that's ok! I've been married for 18 years, coming up quickly on 19. I've disappointed Steve more than a few times, but he never stopped loving me...and same here - he's let me down as well. If you give the other person a chance, they usually will rise to the occasion! Hope things work out for you, Karen

What would you change it to? Sunshine's Slave & Diva's Daddy are pretty catchy! But you could just leave it as is since there's a story behind your current screename... That didn't help at all, did it? lol Karen

I have a stupid question, so please forgive my ignorance! If you have an all-female team, do you have to compete in the women-only section, or can you be in the category with all-male & mixed teams? If I had an all-female team, I would want to compete with everyone else, not just against other women teams. Thanks, Karen

I've had asthma since I was little...my attacks have lessened in frequency & intensity over the years, but I still carry an inhaler with me. I've had problems on the ride to altitude before, but have always been able to deal with it well enough to continue the jump. I haven't noticed a problem in freefall (too much else going on I think!!) I've thought about carrying my "puffer" with me on the dive, but haven't done that yet. If I notice a problem starting while I'm still on the ground..I simply don't jump. I don't want to take the chance of it getting worse while I'm in the air, plus I like to put all my attention on the skydive! I think you'll be fine...just keep your meds with you, and know yourself well enough to know when to take things down a level or two. Blue skies, Karen

Hey, Jessica! I've been sewing since I was a wee lass, and I can honestly tell you that if you buy the machine that you can easily afford right now (the cheapo $100 Singer from WalMart or whereever) you will only end up frustrated! It will not be able to sew adequately through multiple layers, and the tension will most likely be all jacked up by the time you've had the thing for 6 months. Save your money and get the quality machine you really need & want, you won't regret it. Blue skies, Karen P.S. Wendy is right on - you don't need lots of features, either...just the basics will do the job! I have a Bernina, absolutely love it; and my rigger has an industrial Bernina, just in case you're curious.

We stayed at the Travelodge in Sun City...it's about 10 minutes down I215, it's clean, but definitely "no frills". It's about $50/night. Next time we go down to Perris, we're going to try the IHOP right there on the DZ... Blue ones, Karen

Hey, Michele! We were going to stay Sat and come home Sun, but I was kinda "jumped" out (is that considered blasphemous to the Church of the Blue Skies? ) Plus, with all the , umm, "full-contact RW" I did during the week, my body is seriously starting to look like one big purple & green bruise! We did do the canopy course on Friday...good stuff! It's going to be a challenge for me to change my "sight pictures" as Jim Slaton calls it...for my flare timing, landing pattern, etc. The next 25 jumps or so are really going to be critical for me in changing my ways, but I'm going to really try to keep on the right track! As for the firing range at our DZ, well...just don't call attention to yourself by wearing bright colors (words of wisdom from the gal with the neon green jumpsuit), and don't make any sudden movements under canopy (they consider it a challenge), and for god's sake, don't yell "pull"! Blue skies, Karen

Hi, Michelle!! We've just arrived back home...what fun to read about our jumps together from your perspective!
-
Yea! Wouldn't miss it, Michelle!!

Just curious, Freebird, what's a "4 miler marathon"? Is it a team relay where you only have a 4 mile segment each? My favorite sports other than skydiving are hiking, biking, & running...but I don't get out to do those much anymore since starting jumping! Karen

Sounds great! Hope to see you there! Blues, Karen
