Working towards my A License...
silent_pumpkin replied to jrrasmussen's topic in Introductions and Greets
Same here - 27 jumps at Lodi. So far I have quite a few 2-ways and 1 3-way. It helps that my cousin jumps with me and I ask solo jumpers before loads if they'd like to help me with RW. I'm 115lb (134lb exit weight) fyi. I live in the east bay and scheduled Saturdays for going out to Lodi. PM me if you want to talk about meeting up/carpool. And of course, greetings! -
Have you ever bought tampons or pads for her?
silent_pumpkin replied to lpdwntnd's topic in The Bonfire
I guess the gain from your mom would be that she tells her friends and them being jealous of her caring son, since they have inconsiderate bastards. And good for you! -

silent_pumpkin replied to lpdwntnd's topic in The Bonfire
This came up when my husband and I were dating and he said he would be happy to do buy pads/tampons/midol/whatever. I thought he was sweet and slightly whipped. Only do I come to find out that he has an ulterior motive for being so nice. He explained to me that he acknowledged my physical discomfort/hormonal plunges and inevitable emotional swings and would 'help me out.' He knew that I would be appreciative of him and not only be rather nice to him, but thank him appropriately later. Guys, think about the leverage you could have - being the nice guy and going out of your way to help out your woman - by just going to the freaking store. If there was ever a time to gain brownie points, this would be it. For the morons who wouldn't do this "dreadful" task, I hope you get a used tampon tea bag the next time you're ill and your better half is caring for you. -
I like The Hunger Site. They have many interesting/hand-made gift items for sale and every purchase helps fund food donations. You can also donate in a more traditional fashion and choose where your donation goes from clean water, food, education, etc. The Hunger Site: http://shop.thehungersite.com/store/category.do?categoryId=253&siteId=220page=1

I have always been the introverted type and wouldn't call myself shy, but perhaps socially awkward/insecure. I do not want to appear like an idiot and (for example) go up to some unknown person and try to strike up a conversation. But if that same person starts a convo, I will most certainly engage them. At a new job, I will watch and ask questions when needed, but slowly start to converse with my new coworkers - feeling out their personalities first. I have tried to be more extroverted and usually shoved my foot in my mouth. As a result, I tend to keep quiet unless I feel I can contribute with my thoughts...hence "silent." On the flip side, since I tend not to ask too many stupid questions at work, unlike some other coworkers, I am looked highly upon for my inquisitive intellect. I take ownership of some projects and am given raises over other coworkers for taking the initiative. People have called me shy, serious, goofy/funny, independent, tough/strong, introverted, confident, and intelligent, all while thinking I have an introverted/insecure/protected personality. Being 'shy' has only hurt me in social settings, it seems....participating in real bonfires is especially painful for me.

Maybe companies are more progressive for benefit equality, but not the individual voters.... When looking at results for the Prop 8 ballot counts, the state was divided into the more liberal 'no' across the coast and conservative 'yes' in rural areas.

I am going to be...26. I could go with the standard birthday suit, but will be going as a sexy version of Lois Lane w/ corset and thigh highs.

Too funny! This was from a mass e-mail forward that a relative sent me...probably could edit it in the third-person to avoid ownership fallout.

oops, my 'official' title would be: Production chemist of external diagnostic quality controls for infectious diseases (using potentially infectious plasma) fun stuff

Why you never question a drunk (mass e-mail): I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected: A half-gallon of 2% milk A carton of eggs A quart of orange juice A head of lettuce A 2 lb. can of coffee A 1 lb. package of bacon As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind me watched as I placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the drunk calmly stated, 'You must be single.' I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since I indeed had never found Mr. Right. I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about my selections that could have tipped off the drunk to my marital status.. Curiosity getting the better of me, I said, 'Yes you are correct. But how on earth did you know that?' The drunk replied, 'Cause you're ugly.

I was the one who mentioned 2/3 standups after downsizing last weekend and let me explain why that is awesome based on my past. Using the 170 for AFF (jumps 1-8) and solo (jumps 9-14) I had ONE stand-up landing - that's 1/14! I could feel the lack of response when flaring and had issues finding its sweet spot. Last Saturday, my first jump of the day was again on the 170 and an almost standup, but finished with knees/legs to the ground. I followed that with 3 jumps on the 150 and had 2/3 standups and it felt amazing. Swirling groundwinds haven't been helping though. I fully understand why you would state that opinion, but not only did I improve my landings, but I feel more control with the 150. My DZO wants me to think about a 135 soon which I feel is beyond my safety level now and I won't be jumping that until I have more experience with the 150. These are rental rigs and yes it is stressful wondering if I'm going to slide in or standup. My reviews are "you should flare earlier, flare later" and that sweet spot conversation. Maybe a 170 on ~130lbs was a little too low wl, and this will allow me to actually fly the damn thing instead of it flying me. Edited for more info

I finished AFF last month and was training on a 170. This past weekend the DZO told me to try out the 150. To be perfectly honest I was a bit nervous, but 2/3 stand-up landings and the canopy was RESPONDING to me. HEEEEELLLLLLLLOOOOO!!!!! I am 110lbs, ~133lbs w/ gear and that leaves my wingloading under 1 (0.89 to be exact). What would you be downsizing from and why do you want to jump a 150 specifically, especially at your weight? I may be a newbie, but it only takes one look at all the incidents with overloading and minimal canopy experience to know that downsizing should be done over time with increasing experience.

What whuffo questions annoy you the most?
silent_pumpkin replied to Tuna-Salad's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I must say that most questions don't annoy me. Maybe because I am still a newbie and enjoy talking to anyone who will listen to me - my coworkers genuinely ask how my jumps went over the weekend. Although, the one time I felt frustrated was trying to explain to my sister why I couldn't land in a certain area when my landing pattern/altitude/wind direction were taken into account. She just kept asking 'why not?'....sigh.
