If that's how it's actually done at dropzones in your observation or experience Robin, then that is not only just a shame, it is, IMO - WRONG. Sure, if you predicate your argument just strictly based upon that model or premise - you win - hands down. But this is clearly not the best, let alone what should be even accepted as any "industry practice" for student radio procedure/ops. Surely no-one would actually advocate that. I am of mixed feelings on radio & radio use / perceived possible dependency. I can actually see both your points, and I know I have posted on this in much greater detail (than I care or have time right now to get into here) before elsewhere. I think I may have even myself somewhere once, actually even started a thread, with very similar title. I will either find it and reference it, or weigh-in with my experience examples on more proper radio protocol procedures I've observed, later. But this example given, is just plain - sad. Disappointing to say the least, if anywhere this is truly, some(s) actual practice. Teaching what, in particular Phil? - The FJC? TLO's for incremental (pre-A license) categories? ...In general, I have found that having an instructional flow that provides a stimulating variety (not necessarily just flashy aids or props in of themselves) of both visual, audio & even physical interaction with the learner/student(s) & varies location (not just sitting in one place throughout, like a classroom - regardless of aids/props provided) works best. For instance, when I teach a FJC, it starts in the classroom, with a video, then outlining the TLO's, then an introduction to the gear - and then moving OUT to the hangar to open it all up (I hate it when I see instructors still do all this remaining IN the classroom!) - then, out to the airplane, or the ramp, to get the intro to the A/C - see the landing area etc. - Incorporating USPA's "Whole-Part-Whole" philosophy, but all the while providing (IMO) much needed CHANGES / VARYING OF THE VENUE, to keep things "lively", and hold the student's interest, energy level(s) and attention, is the actual key. IMO, "flashy props", in of themselves - like powerpoints etc. are wholly unnecessary and are not the answer to the problem you seem to be observing. In fact, I find most of those - when provided, are provided really only for "weak" instructors, so they can use them as a crutch - - - and that actually becomes rather, quite COUNTER effective/productive. I can work easily as well (and in some cases even easier) in a venue that has absolutely none of these. So long as you are at least teaching "on-site" (another subject matter altogether - but teaching at home/off-dropzones I find falls into this pitfall) - ON / AT THE DROPZONE. Certainly the venue of the dropzone itself alone can (or should) be able to provide sufficient "props" (and activity/activities) to hold a students attention. "Teaching (verbose) from the SIM"? ...Ewwww - yuck, really? If that is what you are doing, you've prophecized your own problem/doom. Sure - have it (and it must be at least available, in most instances) as a REFERENCE ...but the key to (effectively) TEACHING is 1st knowing the stuff (in it) yourself (and then being able to TEACH it yourself) COLD. ...And that can be done WITHOUT the need of (again IMO should be/should be able to be without) any "flashy props". More likely he is "teeter-tottering" because he is getting very little actual forward momentum/drive, and is at a progression point where his "ground-based instincts" are still over-riding his (still to be better developed) air/flight-based ones. In other words, his involuntary reactions and resultant body position ("balance" signals coming from his brain/inner-ear) is to correct for vertical (standing, not head-down) instability - and thus he is "teeter-tottering" the length (vertical axis) of his body, not lateral instability - as your leg-width suggestion would rather have him correct. dsemac - You are right, without video though, there is absolutely no way for ANY of us on here to tell, or actually, effectively help you correct. First-person, in-air jumping with you, and observing/providing correction/feedback just simply cannot be substituted here. Your profile indicates you are lucky enough to be at a really excellent DZ, with many talented, highly experienced instructors, coaches and available mentors - who I am sure would be happy to help you out with this. That statement, IMHO is not an entirely fair - nor fully accurate Ron, in the real-world, statement at all. Do I think that USPA does absolutely all things simply magnificently either, flawlessly - or heck, even well? No. That would be an equally ludicrous "broad brush" position or statement for anyone to make as well. Spam Arrest is at least a "legitimate" subscription, anti-spam/spam preventative service. It has though, clearly - "mixed reviews" (as to both its effectiveness, and at times - their own practices). That said - in of itself, no - it is not a "scam". However, the individual who reached out to you, via his e-mail that he/she already knows he/she has this "service" upon, should have at the very least, in advance - if they expected a response from you, either "whitelisted" you (in advance - so you would not have had to gone through this) - or informed you of it, to expect it. And allayed your, understandable, concerns. The program, in theory (again how they effectively practice it, has been debated) is merely trying to assure you are a live, breathing, and able to manually respond individual, and are not yourself - a spambot. So you are being "pre-screened". There are several programs and companies/services out there that do this. Spam Arrest is one of them.
