Reminded me of this horrible accident that showed that even with thorough preparation and training things can get terribly wrong. Guy is a quadriplegic now. Sad aspect: Car was driven by his father. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Really, really nice one, like it!

Evangelical Christians denying the existence of gravity

Argh! I somehow managed to NOT realize it's an Onion article. I should have noticed as I read its articles now and then when linked at A Word A Day... Bear with me, I sometimes feel my age... The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -
Evangelical Christians denying the existence of gravity

Sounded like a parody or hoax? I dunno, not even in the Bible Belt should anyone come up with that sort of bull dung. Or was it just a typo and they meant "intelligent farting"? I mean, downwind vs upwind etc The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -
How to stop short on landing/comments on "Demo Jumper hits spectators"
Abedy replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
And be it only to check whether you're prepared to downsize. Just search for "downsize criteria" Another thought: Never heard that you rather land downwind than to hook in? Don't tell it can't happen. Of course one might say you did something wrong if you need to land downwind (swoopers not included heh heh) but in case it is necessary you better be prepared, huh? Just one example: Day with relatively low winds, DZ with Landing-T and respective policy (Obey the T!). 40+ canopies in the sky. Land-T guy notices too late that wind direction has changed. Just around 5 knots or less. No one got injured, all folks landed downwind, some slid it home. Landing-T guy apologized, little bitching here and there, beer at night. Imagine some smartass had decided to "never ever land downwind" and had run into other jumpers' landings? Just one example. Things like that do happen. Be prepared, expect the unexpected etc The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -
I'm not a USPA member so the news isn't too disturbing to me. I will keep reading and enjoying your cartoons on your blog, however - promised! So keep on posting/making 'em The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

I've seen that green tape as well, IIRC a friend brought it along for some "tape-fix job" and he got it from the Bundeswehr. Seems army folks need really sturdy/strong tape The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Safety-aware as Namo is she NEVER EVER would make such a st00pid cartoon not even for the sort of "humour" as some sick folks seem to like. Folks that also watch "funny" accidents on tape shows etc pp. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Yep, I knew the correct term. I just found it funny that someone deliberately wrote it the way sloppy speakers pronounce it In German, it's simply "Klebeband" (from "kleben" = to adhere, glue) or "Isolierband". "Klebeband" refers to all kind of adhesive tapes from clear Scotch tape to the sturdy ones except from any medically tapes which are called "Heftpflaster" or "Klebepflaster". The silver, more sturdy one is often referred to as "Panzerband" (tank band, heh heh). The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Thanks, I learned a new word. Haven't heard of this type of non-destructive check before. (So my donation to Wikipedia once again proved useful ;-) Just being curious: What did you tell the guy? The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

It really is a good idea... for a new cartoon by Namowal! Duck Tape. I like the term Apart from that, the student harness is very sturdy so to say. Each of the upper hooks (and the MLW it is connected to ;-) is able to hold ~ 2,5 t (2500 kg ~ 5500 lbs) The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

The Bonfire... OK, an oven, to take away on your back.

I looked up some of the docs, tnx for the link, interesting. One thing was amusing: "Electric heat - zero annual pollution" Heh heh. Only if one still believes that electric current "comes out of the power socket" The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -

The oven needs to have a post-heating device (e. g. for tea pots etc) to raise its heating power (to 7 kW) so that it meets govt's standards on emission, especially CO2, if you want to install it as an oven in a house/flat. Not so if you use it in the open. BTW: Lotta people here bought wood-burning ovens in the last year as oil got more and more expensive. Wood is still sort of affordable though its price has risen considerably within the last few years. Latest attempt of gov't: They are planning on making a fine-particle filter mandatory for all ovens and fireplaces. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -

XMas is around and it's time for what Germans call "Räuchermännchen" (incense smoker) If ya don't like them Taiwanese knock-offs why not have Granny's multi-purpose oven/stove as a multi-tool for incense, fragrance oils or just as a small stove for your tea mug? Have a look. Nah it's not bl00dy advertising it's just that I can't stand them Chinese/Taiwanese knock-offs nor them "German" products. These are really hand made in the woods of the Ore Mountains in Saxony. Bought one (of the Granny's multi-purpose stoves), works! And gets along with my Chanukkiah as well OK, the Chanukkiah is off-duty now, huh huh. The thing I also like is the real oven to carry away with a backpack. If ya can't have or don't wanna have a real bonfire, ya know... Video is in German but should explain itself. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -
Don't know if this changes your mind, but when I watched the video, it seemed that he had a seatbelt fastened while the 4-way exited (see 1:45), then when he was getting attached to the TI the door was closed again (see 2:40). I'd say that reduces the risk of the passenger falling out of the plane somewhat Edit: links If the door is open and jumpers are getting out it might happen that a reserve is pulled, whatever. In this case TI AND student might need to get out pretty fast. Student being attached to TI comes quite handy then. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Yepp, it reads "Graph these case-sensitive comma-separated phrases" in the input line "squeak" is more popular than "Squeak", clicky. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

The German counterpart "Fallschirmspringen" is slightly declining (clicky) though numbers of jumps (both "sports jumps" and "tandem jumps") have (slightly) increased. Seems media coverage doesn't necessarily follow jump numbers but other inputs. Who would have guessed... The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

But it's fairly moderate compared to more explicit/direct terms (clicky), huhu The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

You're welcome. Found it reading the latest AWADMail (look here), which contained a link to a study about the Evolution of English Words and Phrases Since 1520 (BTW: The article about how the Internet is changing the English language is also quite interesting.) Back to our sport: Skydiving has become much more popular than the mere term "skydive" within the last 20 years. BASE is still way behind, compared in absolute numbers. Look here. Other results: Bratwurst and Zeitgeist are on the rise, Weltschmerz is oscillating and slightly on its way down. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

If you check with Google NGram, you'll see that by around 2004 the term "skydiving" is on the decline: clicky. Slightly, but... Does this reflect a real development or have media and book coverage gone down a little? The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

I dunno regarding the rules. As a licensed skydiver you "only" need to have made 12 jumps within the last 12 months to be good for a jump. If you lack the number you will get some instruction and some tasks to do. Depending on your time on the ground the jump master might have an instructor jump with you. Put it very short, German skygods please do not fill in on "this and that" I'm OK so far, will contact you sooner or later. Off-season here (at least re. jumping) so life is a little more relaxed and much more boring. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Sorry. I have Acronym Deficit Disorder. Muahahahaha AAAA - Association Against Acronym Abuse Nice to hera you're healing well and you (almost) got your own gear. Yeah, play it safe. I waited 8 months after my accident and what to tell: Get an AFFI to jump with you, a really good one, one that "airs" reliability and you're going to jump like nothing happened because there's someone really trustworthy next to you to help you just in case. And this means you won't need any help That's what I did, heh heh. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks
