Riggers - how many reserve REPACKS and SAVES do you have?
skydiverek replied to skydiverek's topic in Gear and Rigging
1.) Riggers - how many reserve repacks do you have? 1.) Riggers - how many SAVES do you have? I mean - how many times was the reserve (that you packed) deployed in an emergency? -
Is this the video?: http://www.jumpshack.com/portal/content.asp?contentid=738 Similar ones are in the Racer commercials on the "Break-Away" tape (where the reserve opening is shown in "real-time" and full sequence. It looks HARD).

The EXACT same scenarion killed the Polish national champion (2400 jumps). All the detalis are the same: the flag, entanglement, trying to cut the mess with the knife, bouncing in front of people during the demo jump. That happened in 1999. Scarry...

The only "theoretical problem" I can come up with is "slider rebound" theory. What I mean by this is the situation where: The jumper has a bag-lock. He cuts-away. The SAME moment the main inflates. The now "super pilotchute" pulls/decelleretes the freebag extremely fast. The line stretch is reached. The freebag slides off. At THAT time the reserve pack job is abruptly stopped by the now stretched lines (and accelerated back to the jumpers sped). This jerk discrupts the pack job and makes the slider bounce off the slider stops and travel some inches down the lines BEFORE the inflation. That causes the reserve to inflate faster. End of scenario. Any comments

Around 7,000,000 civilian jumps worldwide.

That system was NOT designed for a spring reserve pilotchute.

From KellyF: "I have never seen this system installed on a rig, but have seen a sample of it 8 or 9 years ago, so it may not be exactly the same. The Parafun system had a long pin installed on the bridle and further down (closer to the bag) there was a stiffened section with two loops on it. The RSL had a section with two grommets in it that the loops passed through, and then the pin was inserted through the loops to lock the RSL to the bridle. In a cutaway, the RSL would pull the bag out of the container and deploy the reserve, and in a total the reserve pilot chute would launch, tension the bridle (thereby removing the pin and disconnecting the RSL), and then extract the reserve from the container. My details may be a bit off, but that's the basic idea. In basic function, both systems work the same, they just go about it in different ways. The skyhook does add the Collins lanyard to the system for a bit of an advantage if the RSL riser breaks." Can we see some pics???

I wondered the same 2 years ago, and asked the question here on dz.com: "I have always wondered - why? What's the reason for not activating below 130'? I know at that altitude the reserve will not have time to open fully, but if you are gonna go in, why not have it deployed by CYPRES anyways, maybe it is gonna snag the tree, or something?" ...and got good answres like: "It may be better, from a liability point of view, for the cypres to appear to be off after a fatality rather than have the cypres fire too low to save the jumper's life. Bryan Burke has claimed that, in that situation, the cypres will switch off rather than remain on; I have not verified that yet (and can't until I have a timed-out cypres to experiment on.) " and "This logic would inhibit a misfire possibly say during a hook turn. Not that hook turns were prevelent during the design and development period of the early Cypres." and "No matter how reliable they are, there's always the chance one will mis fire. There's absolutely no point in it firing under 100', it won't do you any good any way, so why have the risk of an accidental deployment right when you're about to land." (Think Adrian Nicholas. THAT'S WHY the new Cypres Speed will NOT fire below 300 feet.)

Who has the MOST tandems and how many?

Pin out of loop.

I know this was said in a slightly tongue-in-cheek manner, but FYI, you can jump whatever you want...as long as your intent upon exiting is to land the canopy you are deploying as your "main". If you want to jump a bedsheet (literally), and don't plan on landing it, legally you must have at least 2 other canopies. The law states you must have one parachute on your back that you don't plan on using except in the case of an unforeseen emergency, and that canopy must be TSO'd (US rules). Also, there was a note in Skydiving magazine about the canopy jumped after 50 YEARS of being packed. It opened fine.

From RICK HORN: "I got saved by a backup device (RSL) on Thursday, August 28th. I thought I'd relay the information. My background: 5000+ jumps 107 cutaways (No, i don't need to learn how to pack, a lot of test jumps and films.) About 20 unplanned cutaways. 21 years jumping, AFF I/E, Static Line I/E, Full time instructor at Perris, AFF Course Director for USPA. Equipment Background Rig- Javelin, Articulated harness (Rings top and bottom), RSL and Cypres equipped. Soft Reserve pillow Main, Stiletto 135 Reserve- PD143R I wear my leg straps and chest strap quite tight. The jump: A great AFF Level 4, the student did well, I watched deployment on the student's canopy, and hung around to give a thumbs up for the camera. This put everything happening a little lower than usual, so I threw the main out at about 2100, as opposed to the usual 2500 since I've gotten older and hopefully wiser. The main opened into a severe spin. There were no line twists, but I don't know what caused the spin, as I could not see the left side of the canopy. After the usual playing around with it, I decided to get rid of it. My procedures are grab cutaway, grab reserve, pull cutaway, pull reserve. I went for the cutaway handle, and to my surprise, it was on the LEFT side of my chest. I grabbed it, and reached for the reserve handle. It was somewhere under my left armpit. I could only touch it with my thumb, and not grab it. My theory is that a combination of the severe spin and the articulated harness allowed the handles to move so far. I had also practiced hooking my thumb between the reserve pillow and the housing. I was unable to do it. I then pulled the cutaway handle, as I was not accomplishing anything in my attempt to find the reserve handle. After pulling the cutaway, I continued to search for the reserve pillow. I was unable to find it. I theorize that it tucked under the main lift web as the harness slid back into position. That theory took a couple of days to figure out. Being honest, I have my sincere doubts that I would have found the handle within the 6 seconds of working time that I had left. My RSL prevented me from knowing the answer. I have since modified my rig to include a standard ripcord on the reserve. This should also serve as a reminder that backup devices, whether they be RSL or AAD can save your life, no matter what your experience. Please don't make this into a debate thread, there have been enough. I just wanted to share the experience, so people could make informed decisions. Rick Horn D-6277 AFFI/E USPA AFF Course Director "

Looks like they couldn't ask for a better weather (check the attachment)! PERFECT blue skies, 10% chance of rain and 4-7 mph wind for the rest of 400-way attempts! (that was not the case during the last World Teams in Thailand and Russia...). Good luck guys!!!

No .

Three posibilities: 1.) No. 2.) Yes, right away. 3.) Yes, after a while. Watch "BreakAway" to see all of the above.

Could you post it here? I would love to see that!

Doesn't matter - you were implying that having line twists on a reserve is bad. I proved otherwise.
