Do everything right ... still die?
skydiverek replied to Praetorian's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
1998. Sandy Wombach (sp?) died on that jump. No AAD... -

Who holds the record for the most tunnel time hours? And how many???

What check boxes???

I bet Tonto's thinking about opening shock. Norman Kent's PD-R is lined with Dacron - he carries up to 32 lbs on his head, so the softer the reserve opening (possible terminal), the better.

What's the direct link to a movie? I can't find it on the website...

Hooknswoop believes SMART has inferior construction methods to PD-R. Read his arguments in these posts: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=search_results&search_forum=all&search_string=smart&search_type=AND&search_fields=s&search_time=&search_user_username=hooknswoop&sb=score&mh=50

As Cliff Schumacher put it, every Cypres 1 has that capability. It was never utilized, due to an ever present danger of misfire (at the low altidude). Two out caused by misfire is better that being cut-away at 200 ft (by misfire)...

Well - Next's and Atom's designs that I saw displayed during the last PIA Symposium (2005) were the same.

Atom uses the same deisgn.

MEDICAL TESTS required in your country?
skydiverek replied to skydiverek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In Poland you are not allowed to jump (even fun jump) without medical tests here (as a Polish citizen). They used to be very strict (10 different doctors to visit in often remote clinic in a different city: dentist, family doctor, orthopedist, neurologist, cardiologist, ear-nose-throat doctor, psychologist, and some others. Even gynekologist for women!). In addition, you had to have EKG, EEG, urine and blood tests on you. If passed, the medical permission to jump lasted only 6 months, so you had to do it all over again after half a year... If you didn't pass, you were not allowed to jump... Now it is slightly better (after joining EU) - only one doctor to visit (who comes to the DZ), and you are cleared to jump for 2 - 5 years (depends on your age). But we still envy Americans (and some other nations) who have no medical tests at all! It still sucks, since you are responsible only for yourself (fun jumping). On the other hand, there was no medical tests to drive a car here when I checked few years ago, where you are moving a 1 ton bullet thru the crowded streets, inches from other people ... -
I think that this incident was described in on of those Strong newsletters: http://www.strongparachutes.com/pages/newsletters.html Bill Morrisey described it during the last PIA symposium. Basically, them tandem pair was in a drogue fall, the studend had an altimeter and access to drogue release. Once the student noticed the altimeter needle approching 1000 ft, he pulled ... MEDICAL TESTS required in your country?
skydiverek replied to skydiverek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Please provide the info on medical tests required in your country, in order to be allowed to jump. In the U.S. all you have to do is to sign the statement that you are healthy, but it is not the case in other countries. Non-US jumers - please provide the info from your countries! We are trying to change the law here in Poland and need some encouraging examples from other countries (like ones where there is NO TESTS). Thanks! -
Yes - that data was published in 1997 or 1998 Skydiving magazine.
-
Yes they do. That's why the Velocity is a 7-cell (or 21 cell if you wish).

Yes, up to 300% percent. From Bill Booth: "Spectra (or micro-line) is strong and tiny, so it reduces both pack volume and drag , which means you get a smaller rig and a faster canopy. Unfortunately, It has a couple of "design characteristics" (this is manufacturer talk for "problems") It is very slippery (less friction to slow the slider), and stretches less than stainless steel. This is why it hurt people and broke so many mini risers when it was first introduced. Now, I must say that the canopy manufacturers did a wonderful job handling these "characteristics" by designing new canopies that opened much slower than their predecessors. However, the fact still remains, that if you do have a rare fast opening on a microlined canopy, Spectra (or Vectran) will transmit that force to you (and your rig) much, much faster, resulting in an opening shock up to 300% higher than if you have Dacron lines. (It's sort of like doing a bungee jump with a stainless steel cable. At the bottom of your fall, your body applies the same force to the steel cable as it would to a rubber bungee cord, but because steel doesn't stretch, your legs tears off.)."

I jumped triangular TALKA (DELTA PZ-81) reserve. It was a single skin, non ram-air canopy. I have one reserve ride on it... There is no freebag, reserve is "freepacked". Very light toogle pressure, not too hard landing for non ram-air canopy. The reserve PC was connected to the the "cross-connector only" no-fabric-slider to slow the deployment process.

I think he suggested you fly your wingsuit THRU it...

Thinner air = faster freefall speed (airspeed) = air inflates the canopy fatser.

Has someone made a good skydiving documentary?
skydiverek replied to skydivingdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
"Free Fall" (also known as "Out of the Blue") is a GREAT 50-minute documentary. It was shown on Discovery. Includes: - history of the sport back in 50s - Kittinger jump - Tandem jumping with Bill Booth - North Pole jumps - skysurfing - freeflying with Flyboyz - AADs, audible altimeters explained - factory tours, making the parachutes - Golden Knights training - LOTS of interviews with fampous skydivers, manufacturers, etc. - risks and reserve parachutes explained - and much more! All that is great to watch for skydivers and wuffos! You can fidn it brand new on E-bay by typing "Free Fall" (with a space). I got oit there for $5. Here is one auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/Free-Fall-Skydiving-New-OOP-VHS_W0QQitemZ9110460898QQcategoryZ309QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Geat movie, Discovery style and quality!!! -
The cheapest jump tickets?
skydiverek replied to ernokaikkonen's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was paying $1 for 7000 ft AGL in 1997 (clubmembers only, Gliwice, Poland). 3000 ft AGL was around 30 cents. All prices in U.S. dollars.
