10 times. Watch the exit, watch what the instructors do... watch the student. Enjoy.

Stephen Hawking wouldnt stand a chance if he were British.
dks13827 replied to rivetgeek's topic in Speakers Corner
Vortex that is a false or misleading stat. people from all over the world come here for treatment, that's one thing that is true. The vast majority of us are treated quite well ( my folks and kids have been ). That is another true statement. Then there are all the crack babies and ghetto homicides that distort the figures. You will hate that comment, but it is indeed true. -
Landings ... I am frustrated beyond belief!!!
dks13827 replied to OlympiaStoica's topic in Safety and Training
IMO the first few dozen ( 50 ? ) landings should be easy as can be. New folks must survive the early stages without getting hurt, else they are outta here !!! -
I was 6'2" 185 pounds on my Strato Star and mostly did stand ups for sure. No wind days were a little more unpleasant. Yes, it is funny, my 160 pound friends always had nice Strato Star landings... at the time we didnt think much about the jumpers weight for ram air canopies. But we sure did think about it for reserves !! I made many jumps with a 28' round steerable reserve ( even stood it up one time ). Finally found a 26' Navy conical ( it was not easy to find one for sale )... but I never had to use it !

Jumping Para-Commanders in high winds?
dks13827 replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
wow that video is scary.... I dont remember in windy OK that many drags. I know that pulling a toggle on the ground would often collapse the canopy onto the ground, we also released one capewell !! wow !! -

Landings ... I am frustrated beyond belief!!!
dks13827 replied to OlympiaStoica's topic in Safety and Training
when the Para Plane first came out.. the big danger was letting your buddy jump it !! Some guys on their first jump.. flared to a complete stop at 15 to 20 feet... then let up on the toggles quickly which surged the canopy right straight into the ground. Don't think anyone was killed but it sure got the word out fast,, dont do that !!! Whenever I sold a new Strato Star to someone.. he got a thorough briefing..then he went to 7,500 and did a hop and pop. then I stood out in the landing area and would signal the flare time to him... of course, he had watched hundreds of landings before that day. At little Cessna DZ's, everyone is always outside, watching every exit, every freefall, every landing.. that kind of knowledge was priceless, IMO. -

2 of BO's friends, folks he admires, are bill ayers and bernardine dohrn. After the Tate / LaBianca murders, Dohrn said that was all good...'rich people SHOULD be murdered !!!!'.

Bikerbabe is right on... I learned bike shifting and pickup truck shifting at age 14 on farm roads... that helped me in many many things in life including helicopter school !! think about it... a new heli pilot trainee who has not learned to use all 4 limbs at the same time.. well, it is harder for them.

The Great AFF Experiment has been an Abject Failure . . .
dks13827 replied to NickDG's topic in Instructors
Nick, I cant disagree with you. Especially with the part that students used to understand that the sport is not for everyone. Now, as a 1972 S/L student myself, I recall very well thinking that after a student had a few decent 10 and 15 second delays, that it sure would have been good for an instructor to exit holding the student for a good 30 - 45 second delay ( these were Cessna jumps of course ). Wouldn't that have been a great learning jump ? Honestly, if my daughter ( 1 tandem ) wanted to be a jumper, I would give her 2 or 3 tandems, then S/L course including hop and pops and short delays, then do AFF type jumps !! That's what I think. -
on your water jump when your T-10 opens into a complete ball of trash and you look down at your soaking wet belly reserve ( from the previous load).
