I got a new Para Sled in 1974... jumped it 20 times, no malfunctions but it opened squirrely quite often. It got burns and tears quite a bit so I sold it to Rick Powell in Oklahoma. Rick cut the rings and ropes off and used it subterminal only. It was fun to fly though !! -
shows Joe Walker's F-104 engulfed in flames... terrible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEP7niGqiNg Astronaut Joe Engle was another fine pilot and astronaut........... he was bumped off of Apollo 17 by geologist Harrison Jack Schmitt. Probably a good move.. but kind of disappointing for Joe.

BTW, the Apollo 13 mishap was another boneheaded mistake, if you read the causes of it. Thankfully it turned out well, but it was only good fortune that the tank failure occured when it did. It could have happened with 2 guys down on the moon which would have been sickening beyond belief !!! ( Because there would have been no escape from lunar orbit for any of them. ) This is not picking on Nasa........ even with the accidents we have had, they have done well in a difficult endeavour. IMO, younger people these days do not even begin to realize how difficult Apollo was. It might not ever be duplicated, but I sure hope that is not the case. IMO, Nasa will not be allowed to return to the moon for now. Maybe in some decades.........but my guess is they wont do it anytime soon. ( I am saying the new project will be cancelled !! ) Not good.

One cannot always prevent some clown crashing into one.......... that is understood. I will spell it out for you.... jumping a 79 canopy, or any highly loaded canopy, is optional and adds great risk. So does the impressive swooping manuveur. That's all I was trying to convey.

maybe,, but many of them made THEIR OWN CHOICE !!!! ( which is what jumpers do when they select their hobby of choice). That's the key to our way of life, which I enjoy. -
IMO a prudent jumper could easily remove the landing crashes risk. That changes things quite dramatically, for the better.

I get very angry whenever Nasa guys say that we have to prevent any accident from ever happening again !!!! I would not say it that way, I would say that we are trying to minimize the chances of an accident as much as possible.

great !! well, why wait ? go make a jump !! or a tandem !! or, SL class is not too much money, great way to make some jumps fast !!! it's a blast, all of it !!!!

a great plane. they lost one pilot and aircraft, Mike Adams. Mike would get disoriented during the steep violent rocket flight... he told them about it. they still had him fly it, and it later cost him his life, sadly. When Nasa was designing the shuttle, they wanted to put heavy jet engines in it for landing. The X15 guys told them NO !! dont do that. you dont need that !!! and they were quite right. Another great plane to read about is the SR71, HABU !!!! IMO, we dont have the kind of people anymore who designed and built all the great planes and spacecraft so many years ago. We dont !! Nor do we have the managers of those years. We could not do project Apollo these days.. if we tried, it would take 20 years, not 8, even though we could retrieve all the plans from that era. Sad.

it's a big risk, buddy !!!! extremely high speeds that make 70 mph in a car seem tame ....and of course you can run out of time, that's for sure. my belief is that each jumper can make the risk low enough to be acceptable though. The 8 'bounces' last year is far fewer than what we had years ago.. but of course the landing accidents.... that's something we old timers still can't understand, at least I cannot. After you lose a couple of friends ( expert jumpers !!), you will understand a little better. Sad, but inevitable. You toast the great memories of them, and you go on. I think that all jumpers understand that the risk of a reserve malfunction is not real high... that's the risk we all accept and understand. Reserves mals as such are NOT what kills people !!

I borrowed a Starlite one time,, and only one time !! OUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!! obviously Wendy was tougher than I........ and maybe lighter, too !!! I had a POD (bag ) for my PC and liked it a lot. When the round reserves started to appear with diaper deployment ( and Pioneer had the 'pin' ) that was a huge improvement over the old days of dumping your reserve and 'dont worry, it will open.'

we have all been there,,, but be glad you have one and are not LAYED OFF !!! ( and at my age, this may well cost me, say, $50K, if not much much more !!!! ( but the only jobs I hated were when my boss was totally incompetent. that is just about the worst situation. right now I would take any job with benefits. ) ( I live in AZ if you know any openings).

It scares me when people say... ' xyz is free !!!' No such thing. someone had to work ( for FREE ) in order for someone to get something for FREE !! Oh, they will rant and rave and admit that they WISH things were free.... well, I wish certain things sometimes, but I know they are just that.. 'wishes !!'.

it only takes one bad federal judge (there are lots of them !!!) to GIVE ILLEGAL ALIENS the same rights/benefits as U.S. citizens, sadly. And that will happen. Whenever I have travelled abroad, they wanted to know who I was, and what I was doing there. I was NOT offended. I would expect nothing less. But here in the U.S., you are a racist pig if you even ask those things. Hence, the 9/11 hijackers were stopped by cops before the attack... and nothing was done regarding their permission to be in our country.

well they dont teach them the 3 R's, for starters. and no history in many schools. my daughters only learned Rosa Parks and MLK in history,, and that's pretty much all that they know. sad.
