I was just watching this lecture on TED (ted.com) regarding the Brain In Love by Ms. Helen Fisher and she had this very interesting line where she said unless you are some sort of lab animal stuck in a box or a cage for most of your life you will have a preference as to who you will fall in love and mate with. All their teachers spoke fluent English, all their books had complete sentences, they studied 1/5th as much as we had to.....and there were as many girls as guys in the classes. I don't recall this instruction. But I'm actually a "good" belly to earth flier. If it wasn't for busted up older than dirt rig and it's worn out lines not allowing me to flare...I would have graduated top of my class. For me flying was intuitive. Spin...well that means i have something off that is adding energy into the system. Pull in to take away that energy, then redeploy and if need be "counter" steer by turning your head away from the spin. That is to say if i'm turning to the right..my right shoulder may be down thus look left to bring left shoulder out and help stabilization by arching big. well I've been to one of these "dude in the wind" tunnels in Niagra Falls. I hate to say it...and i know a lot of you guys like them...but i found them to be a bit unsafe and a bit frustrating. For one if you "fly" off the sweet spot you really fly off the sweet spot and go crashing into the wall....fun for me not fun for two girls. Next, that sweet spot is what 2sqft on one of these machines? While in the sky venture type wind tunnels it's quite a bit larger and thus easier to find stability? Case in point, when i took my friends up to the Montreal wind tunnel both of them were able to find stability and float for at least 35 seconds. But when I was in Niagara Falls of the n00bs i was the only one who could find a semblance of stability. I don't know, I would hit it again if i were around but to tell friends to go and drop $$ just to come out frustrated and a bit bruised? I don't know. Short answere is line tension. Get Brian Germain's book The Parachute and its Pilot. He goes into great detail about how the faster the wings airspeed the more lift it generates and in turn more line tension you have (which he explains why that is a good thing). After reading that book you will likely look at your parachute in a completely different light. Yeah I just read that part last week. But I still don't get it. Is it the increased lift that is causing the toggle to "stick" due to lift or does it get tangled? I and a few friends had a chance to fly in the Montreal tunnel. They were just tourists and I was there working on my AFF's and well it was amazing! Great guys, great facility and a great city!
