  8. I worked with Cheryl at Sky Supplies for a couple of years. She was a sweetheart. Candi gave me my first kiss pass in '78, I still haven't washed these lips. Burke Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"

  10. Thanks everyone for your feedback. Got the surgery scheduled for this friday. Just want to get it over with so i can get back to jumping. I am hoping that I can do some tunnel time sooner and then work into jumping. Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  11. So I tore my bicep off the radius bone while exiting the twin otter. I got pinned in the corner of the door and had the grip twist and rip my arm down. Has anyone had this operation? What should I expect for recovery i.e. pain, useful again, back to jumping? Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  12. I didn't mention anything about a base rig. It was in reference to similarities of reserves and base specific pack jobs. Heck the argument could go on ad nauseum, if we wore 6 parachutes and one was taken away we would be less safe. My comment was one aimed more at the Melo-dramatic comments about only having a reserve. I don't know what the facts are as it relates to reserves alone failing, but I would guess it's in the ballpark of losing your brakes on your car. These odds aren't worth getting overly dramatic about. And if you are too worried about the failure rate of reserves, lets all wear a belly wart with no spring loaded pilot chute. Just dig in grab a handful of reserve and toss, like we did in the good old days!!! Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  13. That is the funniest damn thing I have seen in a while. And all you guys with the overly dramatic comments about having 1 of his 2 chances to live taken away, go talk to a base jumper or take a base course and make a jump. You'll be pretty content with that one chute. BS Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  14. Used to use a Cock strap on a Strato Star. Never a mal in 700 jumps, back in the day. BS Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  15. Connie Simpson might be who you were thinking of, but I was thinking of someone else. The more I think of it the less I think her name was Connie. I can picture her face but not the name. Burke Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  16. One was a girl. She was very tiny, maybe 95lbs, wore a weight belt. She worked for Booth (I think). Short black hair. Seems to me it was a mis-fitted rig and handle placement was off. She impacted a lake in Deland. Not sure if it was the one Booth lives on. Sorry can't remember her name for sure but I think it was Connie. And now that I think back. The other two deaths were ultralight crashes on the airport while we were jumping. Burke Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  17. A few years back, a C license got you everything you needed to jump at boogies or do demo's. There was no such thing as a pro rating. Seems there was a group of years that had very few D's handed out but lots of C's. Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  18. Yeah, he was using Greg Gollars RTS. He just drove up and quickly asked Greg to use his rig. Not much prep. I believe there was some powder involved but never found out the autopsy results. Watched him searching for handles all the way down. His roommate died months later diving in one of the freshwater springs. Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  19. Andy Austin of Southern Pines died Wednesday March 3rd. He started skydiving in 1974 at Pinebluff, NC. He later taught me in 1977 at Roseland, NC. Andy died of complications from pneumonia and H1N1. Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  20. Hey fuzz face are talking of Grason Garb? I don't remember but 3 deaths in Deland from 78-82 Burke "skyskeeter" Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
  21. So during thunderstorm season when wind shifts 180 degrees at 15kts. this should be a shrug of the shoulders and a "well those are the breaks on that landing". And, now take a Stiletto or Katana or any other really high performance canopy and land in a 15kt tailwind because that's what was set up 20 minutes earlier when the aircraft left the ground. Hey I got an even more fun idea, step out of a car doing 30-35mph and see how that feels...oh and do a "PLF" that'll make it more tolerable. Bullshit. We come up with all these fixes where teaching really good canopy awareness and windsock reading should be more stressed. I'm lucky, I jump at a place where if the arrow is not aligned even remotely close to the wind and the wind is strong (cause I can look at a windsock and tell) then I just land away from everyone, and into the wind. 22. You make it sound so easy to not get killed, then why does it happen. You also mistakenly think that airtwardo is talking about base when he talks of low pulls. Well he is talking about the 70's and 80's with stratostars and stratoclouds and merlins, etc. These canopies opened consistently the same and much quicker than canopies now. I was a high puller by some standards at 800'. In the saddle every time at 450' give or take 25'. I lived in spite of myself, and this only lasted 3 or 4 months, but funny thing is, I don't ever remember anyone dying from intentional low pulls. Swooping yes. I think the question should be more of, should the USPA sanction these events or should it be more of an X-Game venue. Why do you think USPA doesn't associate with BASE, aside from the fact most jumps are illegal. Could it be the high fatality rate? Dont get me wrong, Luigi Cani was at our dz last summer and was utterly amazing to watch. Loved every minute (more like second) of his canopy piloting. 23. Jimmy Godwin had the D-18. Jumped it a few times. It lost a tailwheel on one takeoff. Also, the Lockheed 10E was in Raeford. Burke Irony: "the History and Trivia section hijacked by the D.B. Cooper thread"
